The purpose of this paper is to analyze the funds and executional organizations of the castle-reconstructions promoted by the Regent Daewon-gun(大院君) from 1866 to 1873. Furthermore this paper aims to examine the renewed structural systems of the castles at the time. Since Byeongin-yangyo(丙寅洋擾), the French Invasion in 1866, Daewon-gun gave orders to repair and to consolidate the castles, especially focused on the costal zones of Chulla-do(全羅道) and Gyeongsang-do(慶尙道), for defending against the invasions by Western and Japanese troops. The royal secret commissioners dispatched to each province evaluated the results of the castle-reconstructions. The funds were prepared by the donation of the officials, inhabitants and Buddhist monks in each province. The special technical experts worked in the fields of the reconstruction or newly constructions of ong-seong(甕城), chi-seong(雉城) and po-roo(砲樓). The systems of the castles were reformed on the base of the application of gunners and the theories of Minbo-ron(民堡論).

The purpose of this study is to identify the construction background of the permanent racecourse constructed by the Japanese around Seo-myeon Busan in 1930 and to analyze the historical meanings of city, architectural characteristics of racecourse facilities at the time of completion and the transition process by addition and improvement after the completion. The Busan Horse Racing Contest held at the land reclaimed from the sea of Busanjin in 1921 at the first time was settled at Seo-myeon opening permanent racecourse in 1930. The change of racecourse location into Seo-myeon instead of Yeonsan-ri as the original location reflects the historical meanings of city such as the accessibility of public transportation, the availability of securing a location for racecourse facilities, the extension of a city and the preparation of military base. The Seo-myeon racecourse completed on November 18, 1930 cost 15,550 won. Its stable was built in 1931, extensively repaired in 1932 and rebuilt in 1940. The betting shop which has been known as the building constructed during the Japanese Colonial Rule is considered to be the building constructed after August 1948.

P450 CYP2D6 enzyme(=debrisoquine hydroxylase) is known to metabolize many neuroleptics and some genetic polymorphisms in the CYP2D6 gene were reported to be associated with tardive dyskinesia(TD). We investigeted the association of two genetic polymorphisms in the CYP2D6 gene, $CYP2D6^*4$ and $CYP2D6^*10$, with TD in Korean schizophrenic subjects. Subjects consisted of 71 Korean schizophrenics and TD was evaluated using the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS). There were no statistically significant differences in the demographic variables of age, male to female percentage and the current antipsychotic(CPZ equivalent) dose between the group with TD and the group without TD. But the duration of antipsychotic drug exposure was significantly higher in the group without TD(p=0.000, by independent t-test). The mean AIMS score in the group with TD was $11.2{\pm}6.6$(S.D.). Genotypings for the presence of $CYP2D6^*4$ and $CYP2D6^*10$ were done using PCR amplifications and endonuclease digestions. There were no statistically significant genotypic and alleleic associations between TD and $CYP2D6^*4$(by chisquare tests), and between TD and $CYP2D6^*10$(by chi-square tests). These results indicate that the $CYP2D6^*4$ and $CYP2D6^*10$ polymorphisms have no significant roles in the causation of TD.

This manuscript represents the official position of the Korean Society of Echocardiography on valvular heart diseases. This position paper focuses on the diagnosis and management of valvular heart diseases with referring to the guidelines recently published by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology. The committee sought to reflect national data on the topic of valvular heart diseases published to date through a systematic literature search based on validity and relevance. In the part II of this article, we intend to present recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of mitral valve disease and tricuspid valve disease.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background and aims</B></P> <P>Oregonin, a major diarylheptanoid derivative isolated from <I>Alnus japonica</I>, exerts anti-inflammatory effects; however, little is known about the effect of oregonin in intestinal inflammation. The current study investigated the potential of oregonin for clinical applications in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and elucidated its underlying molecular mechanisms.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>The anti-inflammatory effect of oregonin in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-stimulated human intestinal epithelial HT-29 cells was investigated. In addition, the protective effect of oregonin was determined against disruption of the intestinal barrier in <I>tert</I>-butyl hydroperoxide (<I>t</I>-BH)-stimulated human intestinal epithelial Caco-2 cells.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Oregonin suppressed the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), IL-8, and IL-1β, and inhibited activation of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) in HT-29 cells stimulated with TNF-α. Oregonin increased heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression through the ERK1/2 and JNK-dependent signaling pathway, which contributed to the oregonin-mediated suppression of COX-2 expression in the HT-29 cells stimulated with TNF-α. Moreover, oregonin induced AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation. Knockdown of AMPK abolished the induction of HO-1 protein by oregonin and suppression of oregonin-mediated ICAM-1 and COX-2 expression in the HT-29 cells stimulated with TNF-α. Oregonin prevented the <I>t</I>-BH-induced increase in monolayer permeability through inhibition of the reduction in expression of zonula occludens-1 and occludin in Caco-2 cells. Targeting HO-1 by siRNA transfection attenuated the oregonin-mediated prevention of loss of tight junction proteins and increase in permeability.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>The findings of this study suggest that oregonin is a potential candidate for treatment of IBD by preventing mucosal inflammation and barrier disruption.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Oregonin inhibits TNF-α-induced inflammation of intestinal epithelial cells. </LI> <LI> HO-1 mediates the anti-inflammatory activity of oregonin. </LI> <LI> Oregonin stimulates AMPK activation in intestinal epithelial cells. </LI> <LI> AMPK activation by oregonin is associated with HO-1 expression. </LI> <LI> HO-1 mediates protective role of oregonin against intestinal barrier disruption. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Objective: This study was aimed at evaluating the diagnostic validity of the Korean version of the Clinically Useful Depression Outcome Scale (CUDOS) with varying follow-up in a typical clinical setting in multiple centers. Methods: In total, 891 psychiatric outpatients were enrolled at the time of their intake appointment. Current diagnostic character-istics were examined using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (41% major depressive disorder). The CUDOS was meas-ured and compared with three clinician rating scales and four self-report scales. Results: The CUDOS showed excellent results for internal consistency (Cronbach’s α ,0.91), test-retest reliability (patients at intake, r =0.81; depressed patients in ongoing treatment, r =0.89), and convergent and discriminant validity (measures of depres-sion, r =0.80; measures of anxiety and somatization, r =0.42). The CUDOS had a high ability to discriminate between different levels of depression severity based on the rating of Clinical Global Impression for depression severity and the diagnostic classi-fication of major depression, minor depression, and non-depression. The ability of the CUDOS to identify patients with major depression was high (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve=0.867). A score of 20 as the optimal cutoff point was suggested when screening for major depression using the CUDOS (sensitivity=89.9%, specificity=69.5%). The CUDOS was sensitive to change after antidepressant treatment: patients with greater improvement showed a greater decrease in CUDOS scores ( p <0.001). Conclusion: The results of this multi-site outpatient study found that the Korean version of the CUDOS is a very useful measure-ment for research and for clinical practice.
Cultivable Microbial Diversity in Domestic Bentonites and Their Hydrolytic Enzyme Production

We have isolated and identified 72 bacterial strains from four bentonite samples collected at the mining areas located in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea, and measured their hydrolytic enzyme (${\alpha}$-amylase, protease, and cellulase) activities to identify the isolates with industrial-use potential. Most of the isolates belonged to the Bacillaceae, with minor portions being from the Paenibacillaceae, Micrococcaceae, and Bacillales Family XII at the family level. Of the strains isolated, 33 had extracellular ${\alpha}$-amylase activity, 30 strains produced cellulase, and 35 strains produced protease. Strain MBLB1268, having the highest ${\alpha}$-amylase activity, was identified as Bacillus siamensis ($0.38{\pm}0.06U/ml$). Bacillus tequilensis MBLB1223, isolated from Byi33-b, showed the highest cellulase activity ($0.26{\pm} 0.04U/ml$), whereas Bacillus wiedmannii MBLB1197, isolated from Zdb130-b, exhibited the highest protease activity ($54.99{\pm}0.78U/ml$). These findings show that diverse bacteria of the Bacillaceae family adhere to and exist in bentonite and are potential sources of industrially useful hydrolytic enzymes.

Objective We investigated prenatal sonographic characteristics of esophageal atresia (EA) with advancing gestation. We focused on the degree of polyhydramnios and the stomach shape. Methods This study included 27 EA cases (EA group) and 81 idiopathic polyhydramnios cases (non-EA group). The non-EA group consisted of cases without any fetal structural anomaly, musculoskeletal disorder, chromosomal abnormality, or maternal diabetes. Both groups included only singleton pregnancies. Amniotic fluid index (AFI) and width/length (W/L) ratio as well as the product of width and length (W×L) of stomach were serially assessed during gestation and compared between the 2 groups. To predict EA using W/L ratio and W×L, receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed. Results Polyhydramnios was evident in 77.8% of EA cases. We observed 25.9% and 22.2% EA cases with an absent stomach and a small visible stomach, respectively. After 28 weeks, the EA group manifested significantly higher AFI than the non-EA group. After 32 weeks, W/L ratio in the EA group tended to be lower than that in the non-EA group (32-36 weeks: 1.36 vs. 1.72, P=0.092; >36 weeks: 1.43 vs. 1.63, P=0.024). To predict EA, the calculated area under the curve for W/L ratio was 0.651 after 32 weeks. The diagnosis of EA using a cut-off value of W/L ratio <1.376 showed sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, and negative likelihood ratio to be 84.6%, 52.9%, 1.796, and 0.081, respectively. Conclusion A low W/L ratio of stomach after 32 weeks with progressive idiopathic polyhydramnios may be used to predict EA.
