      • Analysis of Limited Information Technology Education Implementation in Japanese Schools

        Japan has been promoting Information Technology Education. The government developed a policy for Information Technology Education 10 years ago. It started with the Millennium Project in 1999. However, Information Technology Education has not been successful in Japan. The purpose of this study is to clarify the problems faced by teachers using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools in Japanese schools. Finding reasons why teachers are not using ICT tools can help other regions or countries with similar problems. The responses to each question in the first part of a questionnaire give to elementary and junior high school teachers in Osaka were analyzed using an Affinity Diagram. The total number of idea units was 372. The author classified the free answers into 21 categories. In addition, these categories were further divided into five groups of similar ideas.

        Use of Imaging Agent to Determine Postoperative Indwelling Epidural Catheter Position

        Background: Epidural anesthesia is widely used to provide pain relief, whether for surgical anesthesia, postoperative analgesia, treatment of chronic pain, or to facilitate painless childbirth. In many cases, however, the epidural catheter is inserted blindly and the indwelling catheter position is almost always uncertain. Methods: In this study, the loss-of-resistance technique was used and an imaging agent was injected through the indwelling epidural anesthesia catheter to confirm the position of its tip and examine the migration rate. Study subjects were patients scheduled to undergo surgery using general anesthesia combined with epidural anesthesia. Placement of the epidural catheter was confirmed postoperatively by injection of an imaging agent and X-ray imaging. Results: The indwelling epidural catheter was placed between upper thoracic vertebrae (n = 83; incorrect placement, n = 5), lower thoracic vertebrae (n = 123; incorrect placement, n = 5), and lower thoracic vertebra-lumbar vertebra (n = 46; incorrect placement, n = 7). In this study, a relatively high frequency of incorrectly placed epidural catheters using the loss-of-resistance technique was observed, and it was found that incorrect catheter placement resulted in inadequate analgesia during surgery. Conclusions: Although the loss-of-resistance technique is easy and convenient as a method for epidural catheter placement, it frequently results in inadequate placement of epidural catheters.         Crystallization of a-Si Films with Smooth Surfaces by Using Blue Multi-Laser Diode Annealing

        Crystallization of ∼50-nm-thick amorphous Si (a-Si) with a smooth surface was achieved by using Blue Multi-Laser Diode Annealing (BLDA). The a-Si films were deposited by using RF sputtering with Ne gas or by using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PE-CVD) and were annealed by using BLDA with CW scanning. After the films had been annealed a relatively low laser power below 4 W, the root-mean-square (RMS) roughness deduced from the atomic force microscopy (AFM) results for the surfaces of the Si films was slightly increased, but smoothness was within 3 nm despite the conditions under which the films had been crystallized. BLDA has a potential to realize next-generation poly-Si thin film transistors (TFTs).

        Use of perioperative ureteral stent in abdominal aortic aneurysm with retroperitoneal fibrosis - A report of two cases -

        Retroperitoneal fibrosis is associated with fibroblast proliferation due to inflammatory changes in adipose/fibrous tissue. Given that aortic dilation in abdominal aortic aneurysm can cause compression of the ureter, abdominal aortic aneurysm complicated by retroperitoneal fibrosis is likely to result in urinary tract obstruction. Accordingly,close attention to changes in perioperative urine volume is warranted when operating on patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm complicated by retroperitoneal fibrosis. We have recently performed laparotomies on two cases of abdominal aortic aneurysm complicated by retroperitoneal fibrosis. In the first case, surgery was performed without the placement of a ureteral stent. The patient developed postrenal acute renal failure caused by postoperative urinary retention. In the second case, ureteral stent placement in advance enabled perioperative management without complications. The clinical course of these cases suggests that, in laparotomy with concomitant retroperitoneal fibrosis, preoperative ureteral stent placement can prevent postoperative complications in the renal and urinary systems.

        Effects of Long-term Exposure to Black Carbon Particles on Growth and Gas Exchange Rates of Fagus crenata, Castanopsis sieboldii, Larix kaempferi and Cryptomeria japonica Seedlings

        To clarify the effects of black carbon (BC) particles on growth and gas exchange rates of Asian forest tree species, the seedlings of Fagus crenata, Castanopsis sieboldii, Larix kaempferi and Cryptomeria japonica were exposed to BC particles with sub-micron size for two growing seasons from 1 June 2009 to 11 November 2010. The BC particles deposited after the exposure to BC were observed on the foliar surface of the 4 tree species. At the end of the experiment, the amount of BC accumulated on the foliar surface after the exposure to BC aerosols were 0.13, 0.69, 0.32and 0.58 mg C m-2 total leaf area in F. crenata, C. sieboldii, L. kaempferi and C. japonica seedlings, respectively. In August 2010, the exposure to BC particles did not significantly affect net photosynthetic rate under any light intensity, stomatal diffusive conductance to water vapour (gs), stomatal limitation of photosynthesis,response of gs to increase in vapour pressure deficit and leaf temperature under light saturated condition in the leaves or needles of the seedlings. These results suggest that the BC particles deposited on the foliar surface did not reduce net photosynthesis by shading, did not increase leaf temperature by absorption of irradiation light, and did not induce plugging of stomata in the leaves or needles of the seedlings. There were no significant effects of BC particles on the increments of plant height and stem base diameter during the experimental period and the whole-plant dry mass at the end of the experiment. These results indicate that the exposure to BC particles with sub-micron size for two growing seasons did not significantly affect the growth and leaf or needle gas exchange rates of F. crenata, C. sieboldii,L. kaempferi and C. japonica seedlings.
