What is already known, Tachycardia is seen in almost all cases with febrile status epilepticus caused by an underlying fever, infection, dehydration or the seizure itself. What is new in the current study, Atrial tachycardia should be considered in patients with febrile status epilepticus if the tachycardia is resistant to anticonvulsive treatment.

Background: Management of postprandial hyperglycemia is a key aspect in diabetes treatment. We developed a novel system to measure glucose area under the curve (AUC) using minimally invasive interstitial fluid extraction technology (MIET) for simple monitoring of postprandial glucose excursions. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between our system and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) by comparing glucose AUC obtained using MIET with that obtained using CGM for a long duration. Methods: Twenty diabetic inpatients wearing a CGM system were enrolled. For MIET measurement, a plastic microneedle array was applied to the skin as pretreatment, and hydrogels were placed on the pretreated area to collect interstitial fluid. Hydrogels were replaced every 2 or 4 hours and AUC was predicted on the basis of glucose and sodium ion levels. Results: AUC predicted by MIET correlated well with that measured by CGM (r=0.93). Good performances of both consecutive 2- and 4-hour measurements were observed (measurement error: 11.7%±10.2% for 2 hours and 11.1%±7.9% for 4 hours), indicating the possibility of repetitive measurements up to 8 hours. The influence of neither glucose fluctuation nor average glucose level over the measurement accuracy was observed through 8 hours. Conclusion: Our system showed good relationship with AUC values from CGM up to 8 hours, indicating that single pretreatment can cover a large portion of glucose excursion in a day. These results indicated possibility of our system to contribute to convenient monitoring of glucose excursions for a long duration.
Innate immune response of bovine mammary epithelial cells to Mycoplasma bovis

Mycoplasma spp. are contagious bacteria, and mycoplasmal mastitis is a serious productivity problem on dairy farms. Bovine mammary epithelial cells (bMECs) have an important role in the elimination of pathogens, but the effect of Mycoplasma bovis on bMECs has not been fully described. To elucidate the immune response against intramammary infection by M. bovis, we undertook microarray analysis to examine and profile mRNA expression in bMECs after stimulation with M. bovis. We also compared the effects of M. bovis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli on immune-related mRNA expression in bMECs. Transcriptome analysis indicated a significant decrease in the level of mRNA-encoding lysine-specific demethylase 4D, suggesting that the immune response is suppressed by a decrease in histone demethylase activity. Interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, toll-like receptor (TLR) 2, and TLR4 mRNA expression levels were significantly increased in bMECs stimulated with heat-killed M. bovis, but the expression levels were lower than those following stimulation by heat-killed S. aureus or E. coli. Our results suggest that M. bovis weakly affects mRNA expression in bMECs compared to the effects of E. coli or S. aureus. Moreover, live M. bovis may induce suppression of the immune response in bMECs.

This study presents guidelines for developing mixed broadleaf–conifer forests in old coniferous plantations under a long-rotation silviculture system. We established nine square sample plots in Chamaecyparis obtusa (hinoki)plantation forests of various stand ages (22–116 years) and densities (250–1650 trees ha^-1). Tree height and diameter at breast height were recorded for all standing trees taller than 1.3 m. This step revealed the varying diameters of coniferous plantation trees and natural broadleaf trees and showed that the density of large trees increased with stand age. The older the plantation forest, the smaller its canopy openness. The standard deviation of canopy openness ranged from 20–30%, with the largest values observed in the middle-aged forests. We estimated the stand density index under which understory vegetation may be established; the maximum stand density index (1028) in the forest studied was considered to be the critical upper limit of stand density control for introducing understory vegetation. Finally, we reviewed previous studies to confirm the validity of our recommendations of long rotation and low stand density control for the development of mixed old plantation forests.
Effects of Body Weight Reduction on Serum Irisin and Metabolic Parameters in Obese Subjects

Background: Irisin is a myokine implicated in lipid and glucose metabolism. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of a body weight reduction on the serum irisin level and physical indicators in obese Japanese patients without diabetes. Methods: The subjects were 22 patients (male/female, 5/17; age, 46.1±16.0 years; body mass index [BMI], 36.9±5.0 kg/m²) who completed a 6-month body weight reduction program at our clinic. The program included diet, exercise therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Blood parameters, body composition, exercise tolerance, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and serum irisin were determined before and after intervention, and relationships among changes in these data were examined. Results: There were significant decreases in body weight and BMI after the intervention. Irisin before the intervention was significantly positively correlated with HOMA-IR (r=0.434, P<0.05). The mean irisin level showed no significant change after the intervention in all participants. However, improvements in % body fat, subcutaneous fat area, triglycerides, and fasting glucose were significantly greater in patients with an increase in irisin compared to those with a decrease in irisin after the intervention. Patients with an increase in irisin also had significantly lower fasting insulin (9.7±4.8 vs. 16.4±8.2, P<0.05) and HOMA-IR (2.2±1.1 vs. 3.7±1.6, P<0.05) after the intervention, compared to patients with a decrease in irisin. Conclusion: Body weight reduction did not alter irisin levels. However, irisin may play important roles in fat and glucose metabolism and insulin resistance, and the effects of body weight reduction on irisin kinetics may be a key for obesity treatment.
Fluorescence Behavior of Benzo[f]Quinoline Doped In Lpd Silica Thin Films

By using the liquid -phase-deposition (LPD) process, which has a potetnial of preparing organic inorganic composite materials, samples doped with benzo[f]quinoline (BfQ)into silica thia films wre prepared. We observed the fluorescene and fluorescene excitation spectra of the samples, as well as the fluorescence lifetimes and time-resoluved fluorescence spectra. The comparison of thefluorescence spectra in pH-controlled buffer solutions yields the results that the dominant species of BfQ in the LPD silica films is a protonated one. The fluorescence band assigned to a hydrogen-bonded species was observed on the samples prepared from the dipping solutions of 3 and 2 M hexafluorosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the fluorescence lifetime measurement. The FT-IR M hexaflurosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the flurescence lifetime meausurement. The FT-IR data proved the existence of included water in silica films prepared from the LPD process. The appearance of the band corresponding to the hydrogen-bonded species within LPD silica phases was explained by the proesence of included water. Depending on the preparation conditions of LPD silica films, the band assigned to protonated species shows bad shifts in a wavenumber region between the peak of hydrogen-bonded and typical protonated species. This implies that there is some distribution of steric conformation of protonated species of BfQ interacting with adsorbing sites of LPD silica. The time -resolved fluorescence spectra suggest that some relaxation process is involved in the conformation of BfQ doped into the solid phase of LPD silica.

After the reversion of Okinawa (Ryukyu Islands) to Japan in 1972, extensive urban and agricultural development resulted in a significant increase in sediment discharge to coastal waters. The release of sediment has caused the degradation of freshwater and coastal ecosystems and biodiversity. A consideration for catchment-to-reef continua, as well as agricultural (socioeconomic) factors is necessary to establish proper land-based management plans for the conservation of the island environment. We have set up a framework to integrate biophysics and socioeconomics: 1) setting a conservation target and threshold, 2) identifying the sources and processes, and 3) examining cost-effectiveness and management priorities. The framework may be applicable to other tropical and subtropical islands with similar characteristics.
