The present study investigated the habitats of Korean fir trees (Abies koreana E. H. Wilson) on Mt. Baekwun (Baekwun-san), determined the current distribution, quantified the contribution of biological and nonbiological environmental factors affecting the distribution, derived actual and potential habitats, presented a plan for the establishment of protected areas, applied RCP 8.5 climate change scenario to analyze the effects of climate change on the future distribution of Korean fir trees, and predicted future potential habitats. According to the results of the study, 3,325 Korean fir trees (DBH >= 2.5 cm) inhabited Mt. Baekwun, and their distribution area was approximately 150 ha. Populations of Korean fir trees were confirmed to exist at an altitude of 900 m above sea level and were distributed up to 1,200 m. Based on potential distribution, areas appropriate for habitation by Korean fir trees were analyzed to be 450 ha, three times the current distribution area, with a focus on Sang Peak (Sang-bong), Eokbul Peak (Eokbul-bong), Ddari Peak (Ddari-bong), and Dosol Peak (Dosol-bong). The forest stands near Sang Peak, the main peak, were evaluated as those with the most appropriate potential for the habitation of Korean fir trees, and populations of the trees tended to prefer the northern slope rather than the southern slope. When climate change scenario RCP 8.5 was applied and future potential distribution was analyzed, the habitats were expected to decrease in area to 20 ha by 2050, with a focus on Sang Peak, and areas appropriate for habitation were predicted not to exist by 2080. Judging from such results, as global warming accelerates, the habitats of Korean fir trees are clearly expected to move from lowlands to highlands.

<P> There are some evidences that K efflux evoked by muscarinic stimulation is not mainly mediated by large conductance K (BK) channels in salivary gland. In this experiment, we therefore characterised non BK channels in rat submandibular gland acinar cells and examined the possibility of agonist effect on this channel using a patch clamp technique. Two types of K channels were observed in these cells. BK channels were observed in 3 cells from total 6 cells and its average conductance was 152⁑7 pS (n=3). The conductance of the another types of K channel was estimated as 71⁑7 pS (n=6). On the basis of the conductance of this channel, we defined this channel as intermediate conductance K (IK) channels, which were observed from all 6 cells we studied. When we increased Ca2 concentration of the bath solution in inside-out mode, the IK channel activity was greatly increased, suggesting this channel is Ca2 sensitive. We next examined the effect of carbachol (CCh) and isoproterenol on the activity of the IK channels. 105 M isoproterenol significantly increased the open probability (Po) from 0.08⁑0.02 to 0.21⁑0.03 (n=4, P<0.05). Application of 105 M CCh also increased Po from 0.048⁑0.03 to 0.55⁑0.33 (n=5, P<0.05) at the maximum channel activity. The degree of BK channel activation induced by the same concentration of CCh was lower than that of IK channels; Po value was 0.011⁑0.003 and 0.027⁑0.005 in control and during CCh stimulation (n=3), respectively. The result suggests that IK channels exist in salivary acinar cells and its channel activity is regulated by muscaricinic and β- adrenergic agonist. We conclude that IK channels also play a putative role in secretion as well as the BK channels in rat submandibular gland acinar cells.

Background: The standard triple therapy used as the fi rst-line treatment for Helicobacter pylori infection are a combination of proton pump inhibitor(PPI), amoxicillin, and clarithromycin. The initial eradication rates of this combination therapy had been 90%. However, in recent studies the eradication rate has declined, and the adequate treatment of H. pylori is in question with insuffi cient questionable with insuffi cient studies. Therefore, this study evaluated the trend in the eradication rates of H. pylori infection over the last 7 years in the Gwang-ju area. Methods: 258 patients diagnosed with H. pylori infection between January 2003 and December 2009 who received standard one-week triple regimen were retrospectively evaluated according to year, regimen, and ulcer locations. Results: The overall eradication rate was 81.8%. The decrease in eradication rate with fi rst-line triple therapy over the study period was statistically signifi cant (p <0.05). There was no difference in the eradication rate in patients with different underlying gastric diseases. Although the difference in eradication rate according to the proton pump inhibitor used was not statistically signifi cant, the eradication rate for pantoprazole was lower compared to other proton pump inhibitors. Conclusions: The decrease in effectiveness of the recommended fi rst-line therapy for H. pylori eradication in the last decade is statistically signifi cant. Therefore, further studies and new guidelines should be discussed and changed in the near future.
Immunogenic Proteins in the Cell Envelope and Cytoplasm of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci
Cho, Yun Sang,Lee, Hee Soo,Kim, Jong Man,Lee, Mun Han,Yoo, Han Sang,Park, Yong Ho,Ryu, Pan Dong Informa UK (TaylorFrancis) 2008 Journal of immunoassay & immunochemistry Vol.29 No.4
<P>Because of the continuous advent of new modes of antimicrobial resistance, it has become difficult to control vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) with standard antibiotics. Therefore, in the interest of public health, early diagnostic methods and a greater knowledge of the pathogenic process are urgently needed to prevent the spread of VRE in humans and animals. To this end, we sought immunogenic proteins suitable for the serological diagnosis of VanA-, VanB-, VanC1-, and VanC2-type VRE. Proteins were extracted from cell envelope (CE) and cytoplasm (CP), and anti-VRE guinea pig serum was used to identify immunogenic proteins. Two immunogenic proteins of 129 and 29 kDa were identified in the CE and CP of VanA, respectively, while a 28-kDa protein was identified in the CP of VanB. Additionally, the CE of VanC1 contained two immunogenic proteins of 30 and 46 kDa, while the CP of VanC1 contained two proteins of 19 and 30 kDa. The CE of VanC2 possessed one immunogenic protein of 40 kDa. These proteins, which were specific to individual subtypes of VRE, will likely prove useful in the serological diagnosis of enterococcal infections and in the study of enterococcal pathogenesis.</P>

<P>Bovine bacterial respiratory diseases have been one of the most serious problems due to their high mortality and economic loss in calves. The vaccinations of bovine bacterial respiratory vaccines have been complex because of no multivalent vaccine. In this study, novel multivalent bovine bacterial respiratory vaccine (BRV) was developed and tested for its safety and efficacy. BRV was composed of two immunogens and five bacterins. These were leukotoxoid and bacterin of <I>Mannheimia haemolytica</I> type A, outer membrane protein and bacterin of <I>Pasteurella multocida</I> type A, and bacterins of <I>Haemophilus somnus, Mycoplasma bovis</I>, and <I>Arcanobacterium pyogenes</I>. ELISA antibody titers to five bacterial antigens in vaccinated guinea pigs increased, compared with those in unvaccinated ones. BRV was safe for calves and pregnant cattle in this study. In calves challenged with <I>M. haemolytica</I> and <I>P. multocida</I>, the average daily weight gain and antibody titers of vaccinated calves increased, and respiratory symptoms (P<0.05) and treatment frequency (P<0.01) of vaccinated calves significantly decreased, compared with those of unvaccinated calves. Interestingly, the antibody titers of <I>M. haemolytica</I> leukotoxoid and <I>Mycoplasma bovis</I> were closely related with the reduction of respiratory symptoms. BRV would be an ecomonical measure for the protection against bovine bacterial respiratory diseases.</P>
Comparison of hemocytic carbonic anhydrase activity of bivalves
Cho, Sang-Man,Jeong, Woo-Geon,Choi, Young-Joon The Malacological Society of Korea 2016 The Korean Journal of Malacology Vol.32 No.1
Carbonic anhydrase (CA), which is involved in shell formation processes in bivalves, is one of the major biocatalysts for carbon capture and storage. In this study we investigated CA activity in the total hemocytic proteins of five bivalves. The highest CA activity was observed in Scapharca broughtonii, which had more than twice the activity found in Crassostrea gigas. No CA activity was observed among the total hemocytic proteins of Pinctada fucata and Saxidomus purpuratus. The results suggest that marine invertebrates may provide a better source of CA, as an alternative to mammalian sources.

Tumor-promoting inflammation is a hallmark of cancer and is highly associated with tumor progression, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) are major drivers of tumor-promoting inflammation, but due to the complexity of the tumor microenvironment, the detailed regulatory mechanisms are still under investigation. Here, we investigated a novel role for transglutaminase 2 (TGM2) in the development of tumor-promoting inflammation and recruitment of TAMs to gastric cancer (GC) tissues. When estimated by array comparative genomic hybridization and droplet digital PCR, the copy numbers of the TGM2 gene were amplified in 13.6% (14/103) of GC patients and positively associated with TGM2 expression. Gene set enrichment analysis of expression microarray data for GC samples with high or low TGM2 expression showed that increased TGM2 expression was associated with tumor-promoting inflammation in GC. In addition, the expression of TGM2 was correlated with the expression of markers for macrophages, neutrophils, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels. Overexpression of TGM2 in GC cells augmented the IL-1β-induced secretion of macrophage-recruiting chemokines and NF-κB activation. TGM2 protein levels were associated with the expression levels of the macrophage marker CD163 in human GC tissue samples. Moreover, GC patients with high expression of TGM2 had a worse prognosis than those with low expression of TGM2. These results suggest TGM2 as a novel regulator of the tumor microenvironment of GC and provide a promising target for constraining tumor-promoting inflammation.
