Severe Adverse Events of Periocular Acupuncture: A Review of Cases

Acupuncture is recognized as a component of alternative medicine and is increasingly used worldwide. Many studies have shown the various effects of acupuncture around the eyes for ophthalmologic or nonophthalmologic conditions. For ophthalmologic conditions, the effect of acupuncture on dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, myopia, amblyopia, ophthalmoplegia, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, blepharospasm, and blepharoptosis has been reported. Recently, several studies on dry eye syndrome have been reported and are in the spotlight. However, given the variety of study designs and reported outcomes of periocular acupuncture, research is still inconclusive, and further studies are required. In addition, although a systematic and reliable safety assessment is required, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports of a literature review of ocular complications resulting from periocular acupuncture. This review collected cases of ocular injury as severe adverse events from previously published case reports of periocular acupuncture. A total of 14 case reports (15 eyes of 14 patients) of adverse events published between 1982 and 2020 were identified. This review article provides a summary of the reported cases and suggestions for the prevention and management of better visual function prognosis.

Background : Rehmannia glutinosa is a perennial herb belonging to the family Scrophulariaceae. Its roots have been utilized as a traditional medicine but the aerial parts (flower, flower stalk, leaf) were not used. In this paper, we aimed to determine the content of three compounds [aucubin, catalpol, and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)] in different organs of R. glutinosa. Methods and Results : The flower, flower stalk, leaf, and root of R. glutinosa were harvested in the end of August. The aucubin and catalpol were analyzed by LC/MS, whereas GABA was analyzed by GC/MS. The aucubin content was the highest in the leaf, while catalpol and GABA were the highest in the flower. The aucubin content of in the leaf was 1.43, 0.81, and 1.07 ㎎/g, respectively. The catalpol content of flower in Dakang, Tokang, and Suwon 9 was 41.06, 28.78 and 37.48 ㎎/g, respectively. The GABA content of flower in Dakang, Tokang, and Suwon 9 were 0.79, 0.76 and 0.65 ㎎/g, respectively. Conclusions : The contents of aucubin, catalpol, and GABA were higher in leaf and flower than that of root. This study provides the important information of R. glutinosa leaf and flower as a potential supplement.

<P>The regeneration of bone defects caused by periodontal disease or trauma is an important goal. Porous hydroxyapatite (HA) is an osteoconductive graft material. However, the hydrophobic properties of HA can be a disadvantage in the initial healing process. HA can be coated with TiO<SUB>2</SUB> to improve its hydrophilicity, and ultraviolet irradiation (UV) can further increase the hydrophilicity by photofunctionalization. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of 5% TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-coated HA on rabbit calvarial defects and compare it with that of photofunctionalization on new bone in the early stage. The following four study groups were established, negative control, HA, TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-coated HA, and TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-coated HA with UV. The animals were sacrificed and the defects were assessed by radiography as well as histologic and histomorphometric analyses. At 2 and 8 weeks postoperatively, the TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-coated HA with UV group and TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-coated HA group showed significantly higher percentages of new bone than the control group (<I>p</I> < 0.05). UV irradiation increased the extent of new bone formation, and there was a significant difference between the TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-coated HA group and TiO<SUB>2</SUB>-coated HA with UV group. The combination of TiO<SUB>2</SUB>/HA and UV irradiation in bone regeneration appears to induce a favorable response.</P>
Short knee radiographs can be inadequate for estimating TKA alignment in knees with bowing

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the discrepancy of alignment categorization in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between the anatomical femorotibial angle (aFTA) measured on short knee radiographs and the mechanical hip–knee–ankle axis angle (mHKA) measured on full-length radiographs in knees with and without bowing. Methods: From January 2014 to June 2017, 107 of 526 osteoarthritic knees at our hospital were found to have femoral or tibial bowing. Bowing was defined as a femoral bowing angle (FBA) > 3° or < − 3° or a tibial bowing angle (TBA) > 2° or < − 2° in full-length preoperative radiographs. Among 419 knees without bowing, we selected 107 knees as a control group using propensity-score matching. Postoperative alignments were categorized by aFTA in short knee radiographs and mHKA in full-length radiographs into neutral (2° ≤ aFTA≤7°, − 3° ≤ mHKA≤3°), varus (aFTA< 2°, mHKA< − 3°), and valgus (aFTA> 7°, mHKA> 3°) alignments. We compared the categorization of alignments between knees with and without bowing using the McNemar test and used logistic regression to find factors for the alignment discordance. Results: Coronal alignment was discordant in 26.2% of the knees with bowing and 13.1% of the knees without bowing (p < 0.001). FBAs were a significant factor affecting the discordance of alignment categorization (OR = 1.152, 95%CI 1.038–1.279, p = 0.008). Conclusion: Short knee radiographs are insufficient for estimating coronal alignment after TKA, particularly in knees with femoral bowing.
Sensorless Control Method in IPMSM Position Sensor Fault for HEV

The widely used motors in HEV(Hybrid Electric Vehicles) are IPMSM(Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) which has no rotor heat, higher efficiency and advantageous in volume and weight comparing with other motors. For vector control of IPMSM, position information of rotor is required but Resolver is mainly used as the detecting sensor. However, the use of position sensors will reduce the system reliability of hybrid electric vehicles. In this paper, a way to control the motor by sensorless was proposed at the event of sensor failure. We also implemented IPMSM sensorless operation by the expanded EMF(Electro Motive Force) voltage way and harmonic voltage which is applying in the low speed area. And we proposed how to change with sensorless control by detecting the position sensors failure and verified it through experiments.
Insulin Resistance as a Risk Factor for Gallbladder Stone Formation in Korean Postmenopausal Women

Background/Aims: The objective of this study was to determine whether insulin resistance is associated with gallbladder stone formation in Korean women based on menopausal status. Methods: The study included 4,125 consecutive Korean subjects (30-79 years of age). Subjects who had a medical history of diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, other cardiovascular disorders, or hormone replacement therapy were excluded. The women were subdivided into two groups according to their menopausal status. Results: Analysis of premenopausal women showed no significant differences in the homeostasis model of assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index between the two groups in terms of gallstone disease. The associations between the occurrence of gallbladder stones and age, obesity, abdominal obesity, hyperinsulinemia, and high HOMA-IR index were statistically significant in the analysis with postmenopausal women. In a multiple logistic regression analysis, low high density lipoprotein-cholesterol was an independent predictor of gallbladder stone formation in premenopausal women. However, the multiple logistic regression analysis also showed that age and HOMA-IR were significantly associated with gallbladder stone formation in postmenopausal women. In an additional analysis stratified by obesity, insulin resistance was a significant risk factor for gallbladder stone formation only in the abdominally obese premenopausal group. Conclusions: Insulin resistance may be associated with gallbladder stone formation in Korean postmenopausal women with abdominal obesity.
