When an unknown light source impinges on the patterned photonic crystals, the light information can be identified from the reflection intensity profile of the constituent photonic crystals.         Effect of Platelet-Rich Fibrin on Repair of Defect in the Articular Disc in Rabbit Temporomandibular Joint by Platelet-Rich Fibrin

        The objective of this study was to evaluate platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)’s effectiveness in repairing articular disc defect in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of rabbits. Eight rabbits were divided into four groups of two rabbits each, corresponding to groups A, B, C, and D. Both TMJs of all of the rabbits were used in the experiments: the right joints comprised the experimental groups, and the left ones, the control groups. The disc defect was circular and 2 mm in diameter. In the experimental groups, the PRF was compressed into the defect, whereas the control group defects were left untreated. A, B, C, and D groups were sacrificed at the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th weeks, respectively. The defects of each control group exhibited no specific changes. Contrastingly, in each experimental group, there was an increased number of chondroblasts at the margins of the defects, along with accelerated cell differentiation and a columnar cell arrangement observable at the time of cell differentiation. The experimental groups showed inflammatory cell infiltrations and fibrosis by the 1st week, maturation of chondrocytes by the 2nd week, and proliferation by the 4th week, after which the defects began to be filled with chondrocytes, a process that was complete after the 6th week. In the histological evaluation (H-E), the experimental groups showed significant increases of chondroblasts after the 2nd and 4th weeks, as well as regular columns of chondrocyte arrays observable during cell division. After 6 weeks, the defects were filled with chondrocytes.

        Case Reports : Apocrine Carcinoma of the Groin Possibly Associated with Extramammary Paget`s Disease

        Apocrine carcinoma is a rare malignancy with invasive potential. It presents as painless, slow-growing, firm or cystic, red nodules with focal ulcerations. The tumor is capable of hematogenous dissemination to the liver, lungs, and bone as well as lymphatic spread. In addition, apocrine carcinomas cause intra-epidemial pagetoid spread. We report a case of an apocrine carcinoma related with extensive extramammary Paget`s disease (EMPD). The relationship between apocrine carcinoma and EMPD remains to be understood. Co-existing cases with apocrine carcinoma and EMPD are discussed to better understand the relationship between these two malignant apocrine tumors. (Ann Dermatol 23(4) 519~522, 2011)

First Prime is the first residential project in Sejong City to develop as a symbolic and promotional sustainable residential community model. Thus "First Prime" was designed to ensure the harmony of human, nature and urban function. All buildings achieved highest grade on energy efficiency rating and admit many sustainable building design considerations including renewable energy, providing more than 40% of eco area, reservation of historical site, biomass retreatment system and link with sustainable transportation system. This project received highest grade on Korean green building rating.

        Extent of linkage disequilibrium and effective population size of the Landrace population in Korea

        Objective: The genetic diversity of the Landrace population, a representative maternal pig breed in Korea, is important for genetic improvement. Previously, the effective population size (Ne) has been used to infer the genetic diversity of a population of interest. In this study, we aimed to use single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data to characterize linkage disequilibrium (LD) and the Ne of the Korean Landrace population. Methods: We genotyped 1,128 Landrace individuals from three representative Korean major grand-grand-parent (GGP) farms using the Illumina PorcineSNP60 version2 BeadChip, which covers >61,565 SNPs located across all autosomes and mitochondrial and sex chromosomes. We estimated the expected LD and current Ne, as well as ancestral Ne. Results: In the Korean Landrace population, the mean LD ($r^2$) of 3.698 million SNP pairs was $0.135{\pm}0.204$. The mean $r^2$ decreased slowly with as the distance between SNPs increased, and remained constant beyond 3 Mb. According to the $r^2$ calculations, 8,085 of 3.698 million SNP pairs were in complete LD. The current Ne (${\pm}$standard deviation) of the Korean Landrace population is approximately 92.27 [79.46; 105.07] individuals. The ancestral Ne exhibited a slow and steady decline from 186.61 to 92.27 over the past 100 generations. Additionally, we observed more a rapid Ne decrease from the past 20 to 10 generations ago, compared with other intervals. Conclusion: We have presented an overview of LD and the current and ancestral Ne values in the Korean Landrace population. The mean LD and current Ne for the Korean Landrace population confirm the genetic diversity and reflect the history of this pig population in Korea.

        A Comparison Study of Real-Time Solution to All- Attitude Angles of an Aircraft

        In this paper, the quaternion, the dual Euler, and the direction cosine methods are numerically compared using a non-aerodynamic 6 degree-of-freedom rigid model at all-attitude angles of an aircraft. The dual Euler method turns out to be superior to the others in the applications because it shows better numerical accuracy, stability, and robustness in integration step sizes. The dual Euler method is affordably less efficient than the quaternion method in terms of computational cost. Numerical accuracy and stability, which allow larger integration step sizes, are more critical in modern real-time applications than computational efficiency because of today's increased computational power. If the quaternion method is required because of constraints in computation time, then a suppression mechanism should be provided for algebraic constraint errors which will eventually add computational burden.

      • Distribution of Rare Plants- Ulsan, Busan, Yangsan

        A total of 15 rare plant species, including CR species of Abelia spathulata Siebold & Zucc., Tricularia yakusimensis Masam., Wikstroemia ganpi (Siebold & Zucc.) Maxim., EN species of Jeffersonia dubia (Maxim.) Benth. & Hook.f., Hololeion maximowiczii Kitam., Deutzia paniculata Nakai, VU species of Drosera rotundifolia L., Pogonia japonica Rchb.f., Euphorbia fauriei H.Lev. & Vaniot, LC species of Iris ensata var. spontanea (Makino) Nakai, Lysimachia coreana Nakai, Iris ensata var. spontanea (Makino) Nakai, Utricularia racemosa Wall. and DD species of Veronica pusanensis Y.Lee and Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia Fernald, were observed during the study conducted on the distribution of rare plant species in the Ulsan Busan Yangsan region. Of the 15 taxa, 3 were trees and 12 were herbs. 6 taxa (Tricularia yakusimensis Masam., Hololeion maximowiczii Kitam., Drosera rotundifolia L., Pogonia japonica Rchb.f., Iris ensata var. spontanea (Makino) Nakai, Utricularia racemosa Wall.) were those found in wetlands, 4 taxa (Wikstroemia ganpi (Siebold & Zucc.) Maxim., Jeffersonia dubia (Maxim.) Benth. & Hook.f., Lysimachia coreana Nakai, Iris ensata var. spontanea (Makino) Nakai) on mountain slopes, 3 taxa (Euphorbia fauriei H.Lev. & Vaniot, Veronica pusanensis Y.Lee, Glaux maritima var. obtusifolia Fernald) in the coastal region, and 2 taxa (Abelia spathulata Siebold & Zucc., Deutzia paniculata Nakai) in the valley area. In the case of rare plant species found in wetlands, there has been damage caused by coast elevation, forest road construction and farming, and in the case of other rare plant species, there has been damage caused by developments and other detrimental factors. Wikstroemia ganpi (Siebold & Zucc.) Maxim. and Veronica pusanensis Y.Lee are especially in need of protective measures, since their habitat is decreasing and they are being damaged via picking.

      • Status of Alien Plant Species in the Seongeup Folk Village in Jeju Island

        The study performed flora investigation for 3 times on seasonal basis between April and October 2012 in Seongeup Folk Village, Pyoseon-myeon, Jeju-si designated as No. 188 of the National Major Folk Cultural Asset to analyze distribution and features of alien plants and categorized naturalized plants to calculate the naturalized index and the urbanization index. The tracheophytes of the village is 201 taxa including 80 families, 175 genus, 183 species, 14 varieties, 2 plants and 2 subspecies and the alien plants account for 32.8% with 66 taxa including 37 families, 60 genus, 63 species, 2 varieties and 1 subspecies and the naturalized plants have a total of 27 taxa including 14 families, 24 genus, 26 species and 1 variety. The naturalized index of the 321 taxa of the naturalized plants was 13.4% and the urbanization index was 8.4%. Systematic plans to manage plants in the Seongeup Folk Village are required, as well as gradually eliminate alien and naturalized plants and replace them with indigenes.

        Case Report : Pulmonary Metastasis of Basal Cell Carcinoma

        Although basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer, it rarely metastasizes. Metastatic basal cell carcinoma may, therefore, initially elude diagnosis and management. We describe the case of a patient with a metastatic basal cell carcinoma present in the lungs. The differential diagnosis of suspected metastatic lesions should include metastases from a cutaneous basal cell carcinoma, in addition to those from more commonly metastasizing carcinomas, especially in patients with a history of a large basal cell carcinoma that has involved the head and neck regions, and was refractory to treatment.
