The XylH gene (1,167-bp) encoding a novel hemicellulase (41,584 Da) was identified from the genome of Microbacterium trichothecenolyticum HY-17, a gastrointestinal bacterium of Gryllotalpa orientalis. The enzyme consisted of a single catalytic domain, which is 74% identical to that of an endo-β-1,4-xylanase (GH10) from Isoptericola variabilis 225. Unlike other endo-β- 1,4-xylanases from invertebrate-symbiotic bacteria, rXylH was an alkali-tolerant multifunctional enzyme possessing endo-β-1,4-xylanase activity together with β-1,3/β-1,4- glucanase activity, which exhibited its highest xylanolytic activity at pH 9.0 and 60oC, and was relatively stable within a broad pH range of 5.0-10.0. The susceptibilities of different xylosebased polysaccharides to the XylH were assessed to be as follows: oat spelts xylan > beechwood xylan > birchwood xylan > wheat arabinoxylan. rXylH was also able to readily cleave p-nitrophenyl (pNP) cellobioside and pNP-xylopyranoside, but did not hydrolyze other pNP-sugar derivatives, xylobiose, or hexose-based materials. Enzymatic hydrolysis of birchwood xylan resulted in the product composition of xylobiose (71.2%) and xylotriose (28.8%) as end products.
Formation of Neutral Beam by Low Angle Reflection

In this study, a neutral beam was formed using a low angle forward reflection of the ion beam and its degree of neutralization at different reflection angles was investigated. When the ion beam was reflected by a reflector at the angles lower than 15°, most of the ions reflected were neutralized and the lower reflector angle showed the higher degree of neutralization. Photoresist(PR) and SiO₂ etchings were carried out with the neutralized oxygen and fluorine radical fluxes, respectively, and highly anisotropic etch profiles could be obtained suggesting the formation of highly directional neutral flux.

Backgrounds/Aims: Combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC) is an uncommon subtype of primary liver cancer that has rarely been reported in detail. This study was performed in order to evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic factors of cHCC-CC in single center. Methods: The clinicopathological features of patients diagnosed and operated with cHCC-CC at Chonbuk National Hospital between July 1998 and July 2007 were retrospectively studied by comparing them with patients with only hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who had undergone a hepatic resection during the same period. Results: Ten out of 152 patients who had undergone a hepatic resection were diagnosed with cHCC-CC and thus included in this study (M : F=8 : 2, median age: 52±11.1 years). According to the parameters of the 7th American Joint Committee on Cancer T staging, there were 76 (50.0%), 44 (28.9%), 9 (5.9%), 18 (11.8%) and 5 (3.3%) patients with T stages 1, 2, 3a, 3b and 4, respectively. The overall survival period was longer in the HCC only group (68±40.4 months) than in the combined cHCC-CC group (23±40.1 months) (p<0.0001). The 5-year survival rate was 10% in the cHCC-CC group and 60% in the HCC group (p<0.0001). The disease free survival for patients with cHCC-HCC and HCC were 16±37.4 and 51±44.3 months, respectively (p<0.0001). Univariate analysis revealed that age, gender, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), and T stage were statistically significant in terms of patient’s overall survival. However, there were no significant clinicopathological factors identified by the multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Even after the hepatic resection in the HCC, the prognosis is poorer if the patient has cholangiocellular components compared to the usual HCC.
Synthesis of an Environmentally Friendly Phenol-Free Resin for Printing Ink

Phenol-free resin was synthesized and its printing ink properties were investigated. The phenol-free resin was produced by esterification of poly phthalate and Diels-Alder adduct of rosin anhydride. Compared to rosin modified phenolic resin, eco-friendly phenol-free resin showed better vehicle properties in terms of gloss, yellowing, runability, and storage stability. The results suggest the utility of phenol-free resin instead of conventional rosin modified phenolic resin.
