Case Report : Crohn`s Disease in a Patient Undergoing Hemodialysis Caused by IgA Nephropathy

IgA nephropathy is usually localized to the kidney, however, it can accompany systemic disease, including gastrointestinal disease, skin disease, connective tissue disease, and malignant tumor. In some patients with IgA nephropathy which manifested as an extraintestinal symptom of Crohn`s disease, recovery of renal function was achieved following treatment of Crohn`s disease. The pathophysiology of each disease remains unclear. According to some studies, however, immunological, genetic, and environmental factors may be involved in a complex manner. In patients receiving renal replacement therapy for treatment of renal dysfunction due to IgA nephropathy, occurrence of Crohn`s disease as an extrarenal symptom has not been reported. We experienced a case of Crohn`s disease which developed in a patient receiving hemodialysis for treatment of end-stage renal disease due to IgA nephropathy.
UAV Control System Design Using Backstepping-Sliding Mode Controller

This paper presents a backstepping sliding mode controller for UAV(unmanned aerial vehicles) to implement the attitude and position tracking control. First, dynamic model is introduced for the UAV. The Newton-Euler method has been used to derive the defining equations of motion of the six-degree system. The method was obtained by modelling the kinetic and potential energy of the system and the external forces obtained from the aerodynamic analysis. Secondly, the backstepping sliding mode controller is proposed to develop the attitude and position control system for the UAV system and the system was conducted by Matlab/Simulink. Comparative simulation results with other control systems such as backstepping and sliding mode controller and the proposed control scheme show the efficiency of other control systems.
Atg5 knockout induces alternative autophagy via the downregulation of Akt expression

Autophagy play contradictory roles in cellular transformation. We previously found that the knockout (KO) of autophagyrelated 5 (Atg5), which is essential for autophagy, leads to the malignant transformation of NIH 3T3 cells. In this study, we explored the mechanism by which autophagy contributes to this malignant transformation using two transformed cell lines, Atg5 KO and Ras-NIH 3T3. Monomeric red fluorescent protein–green fluorescent protein–light chain 3 reporter and Cyto-ID staining revealed that Ras-NIH 3T3 cells exhibited higher basal autophagy activity than NIH 3T3 cells. Additionally, transformed cells, regardless of their Atg5 KO status, were more sensitive to autophagy inhibitors (SBI-0206965, chloroquine, and obatoclax) than the untransformed NIH 3T3 cells, suggesting that the transformed cells are more autophagy-dependent than the normal cells. Loss of Atg5 improved the cell viability and mobility, especially in Ras-NIH 3T3 cells. Furthermore, we discovered that autophagy was alternatively induced in a Rab9-dependent manner in Ras-NIH 3T3 and NIH 3T3/Atg5 KO cells. In particular, Atg5 KO cells showed reduced mTOR-mediated phosphorylation of Akt (pAkt S473), indicating the mTOR-independent occurrence of alternative autophagy in Atg5 KO cells. Therefore, our study provides evidence that alternative autophagy may contribute to tumorigenesis in cells with an impaired Atg5-dependent autophagy pathway.
Compensation on Impedance of the Stratum Corneum

This study aims at compensation of the skin moisture level using skin impedance and SR factor. SR factor is related with the current diffusion into the skin layer. To efficiently analyze the current diffusion on the skin model, we used an electromagnetic simulation program called Ansys 10.0 Emag. We confirmed that the measured value decreases as the electric current gets more diffused to the layer below the horny layer. In order to conduct actual experiments based on the simulated result, we manufactured special electrodes with 24 pins by arranging 0.8㎜-diameter electrodes every 0.5㎜, in a 3 × 8 array. By simultaneously achieving both impedance value and SR value of skin with the manufactured electrodes, we compared the skin moisture level using the existing equipment to the skin moisture level applied using the skin impedance as well as the SR factor developed in this study. The correlation coefficient between the skin moisture level achieved from the existing equipment and the reference value was 0.615 (p<0.01), whereas the correlation coefficient between the skin moisture achieved from the regression equation in this study was 0.677 (p<0.01). Accordingly, it was confirmed that applying SR factor additionally improves the moisture level more precisely.
