2013 Composites research Vol.26 No.2

This paper presents the fabrication and 3-point flexion testing of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite face/aluminum honeycomb core sandwich panels. Specimen sandwich panels were fabricated with three honeycomb types (3.18 mm, 4.76 mm, and 6.35 mm cell size) and three panel radii (flat, r = 1.6 m, r = 1.3 m). The curved sandwiches were fabricated normally with the core in the W-direction. The tensile mechanical properties of the CFRP 2 × 2 twill fabric face laminate were evaluated (modulus, strength, Poisson`s ratio). The measured values are comparable to other CFRP fabric laminates. The flat sandwich 3-point flexion test core shear strength results were 11-30% lower than the manufacturer published data; the test set-up used may be the cause. With a limited sample size, the 1.3 meter panel curvature appeared to cause a 0.8-3.8% reduction in ultimate core shear strength compared to a flat panel.

AFP mandrel development for composite aircraft fuselage skin

        Kumar, Deepak,Ko, Myung-Gyun,Roy, Rene,Kweon, Jin-Hwe,Choi, Jin-Ho,Jeong, Soon-Kwan,Jeon, Jin-Woo,Han, Jun-Su The Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Scie 2014 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.15 No.1

Automatic fiber placement (AFP) has become a popular processing technique for composites in the aerospace industry, due to its ability to place prepregs or tapes precisely in the exact position when complex parts are being manufactured. This paper presents the design, analysis, and manufacture of an AFP mandrel for composite aircraft fuselage skin fabrication. According to the design requirements, an AFP mandrel was developed and a numerical study was performed through the finite element method. Linear static load analyses were performed considering the mandrel structure self-weight and a 2940 N load from the AFP machine head. Modal analysis was also performed to determine the mandrel's natural frequencies. These analyses confirmed that the proposed mandrel meets the design requirements. A prototype mandrel was then manufactured and used to fabricate a composite fuselage skin. Material load tests were conducted on the AFP fuselage skin curved laminates, equivalent flat AFP, and hand layup laminates. The flat AFP and hand layup laminates showed almost identical strength results in tension and compression. Compared to hand layup, the flat AFP laminate modulus was 5.2% higher in tension and 12.6% lower in compression. The AFP curved laminates had an ultimate compressive strength of 1.6% to 8.7% higher than flat laminates. The FEM simulation predicted strengths were 4% higher in tension and 11% higher in compression than the flat laminate test results.

A three-dimensional model of the U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particle

        Jason A. SOMARELLI,Annia MESA,Ambrish ROY,Yang ZHANG,Rene J. HERRERA 한국곤충학회 2010 Entomological Research Vol.40 No.2

Most of the pre-mRNAs in the eukaryotic cell are comprised of protein-coding exons and non-protein-coding introns. The introns are removed and the exons are ligated together, or spliced, by a large, macromolecular complex known as the spliceosome. This RNA-protein assembly is made up of five uridine-rich small nuclear RNAs (U1-, U2-, U4-, U5- and U6-snRNA) as well over 300 proteins, which form small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles (snRNPs). Initial recognition of the 5' exon/intron splice site is mediated by the U1 snRNP, which is composed of the U1 snRNA as well as at least ten proteins. By combining structural informatics tools with the available biochemical and crystallographic data, we attempted to simulate a complete, three dimensional U1 snRNP from the silk moth, Bombyx mori. Comparison of our model with empirically derived crystal structures and electron micrographs pinpoints both the strengths and weaknesses in the in silico determination of macromolecular complexes. One of the most striking differences between our model and experimentally generated structures is in the positioning of the U1 snRNA stem-loops. This highlights the continuing difficulties in generating reliable, complex RNA structures; however, three-dimensional modeling of individual protein subunits by threading provided models of biological significance and the use of both automated and manual docking strategies generated a complex that closely reflects the assembly found in nature. Yet, without utilizing experimentally-derived contacts to select the most likely docking scenario, ab initio docking would fall short of providing a reliable model. Our work shows that the combination of experimental data with structural informatics tools can result in generation of near-native macromolecular complexes.

      • Role of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 in regulating PDH activation during acute muscle contraction

        Herbst, Eric A.F.,Dunford, Emily C.E.,Harris, Robert A.,Vandenboom, Rene,LeBlanc, Paul J.,Roy, Brian D.,Jeoung, Nam Ho,Peters, Sandra J. Canadian Science Publishing 2012 APPLIED PHYSIOLOGY NUTRITION AND METABOLISM Vol.37 No.1

<P> The oxidation of carbohydrates in mammals is regulated by the pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) complex, which is covalently regulated by four PDH kinases (PDK1-4) and two PDH phosphatases (PDP1-2) unique to the PDH complex. To investigate the role that PDK4 plays in regulating PDH activation (PDHa) during muscle contraction, mouse extensor digitorum muscle was removed from wild type (WT) and PDK4-knockout (PDK4-KO) mice after a 24 h fast and stimulated for 3 min either at 10 Hz (low-intensity contraction), 40 Hz (moderate-intensity contraction), or allowed to rest. Force was recorded and muscle PDHa activity and metabolite concentrations were measured. PDHa activity was ∼2.5-fold higher at rest in PDK4-KO mice than WT mice (P = 0.009) and ∼2-fold higher in PDK4-KO mice at both 10 Hz (P @@<@@ 0.001) and 40 Hz (P @@<@@ 0.001). Force relative to muscle weight was similar at 10 Hz, but was 5.8 ± 0.7 mN·g-1 in PDK4-KO mice and 3.5 ± 0.7 mN·g-1 in WT mice at 40 Hz (P @@<@@ 0.001), with a similar rate of fatigue in both genotypes. From these results it was concluded that PDK4 plays a role in reducing PDHa activity during low to moderate-intensity muscle stimulation, and that absence of PDK4 and the subsequent changes in carbohydrate utilization may alter force production. </P>
