Screening of wheat genotypes as salt tolerance through seed germination and early seedling growth is crucial for their evaluation. Seeds of 20 wheat genotypes were germinated in Petri dishes on a sand bed irrigated with saline (15 dS m -1 ) and control solutions for 10 days and also tested at different salinity levels (control, 4, 6, 8, and 10 dS m -1 ) which were artificially developed in the soil for 30 days. At 10 days, germination percentage, rate of germination, co-efficient of germination, germination vigor index, shoot length, root length, and seedling dry weight were found to be affected due to salinity. Salt tolerance index (STI) for seedling dry weight maintained a significant positive correlation with rate of germination, germination vigor index, shoot length, and root length, which indicates that these parameters could be used as selection criteria for screening wheat genotypes against salt stress. Significant differences in shoot length, root length, and seedling dry weight in 30-day-old seedlings were observed among selected wheat genotypes as well. From the overall observation of germination characters and early seedling growth, it was concluded that the wheat genotypes including Gourab, Shatabdi, Bijoy, Prodip, BARI Gom 26, BAW 1186, and BAW 1189 showed better salt tolerance as compared to others.
Evaluation of Wheat Genotypes for Salt Tolerance Based on Some Physiological Traits

Identification of physiological markers related with salt tolerance during various vegetative and reproductive stages is crucial for evaluating wheat genotypes and improving their salt tolerance. Two salt-tolerant (Shatabdi and BAW 1135) and two salt-sensitive (BARI Gom 26 and BAW 1122) wheat genotypes of Bangladesh were grown in three salinity levels (control, 6 dS m-1, and 12 dS m-1) to observe the sensitivity of some physiological traits.. Salt-tolerant wheat genotypes maintained lower levels of leaf Na, higher levels of leaf K, and greater K/Na ratios in saline conditions than the sensitive one. Due to salt stress, flag leaf proline content was increased in salt-tolerant wheat genotypes whereas the proline level was decreased in the sensitive one compared to the control. Salt-sensitive genotypes showed a greater increment in SPAD (relative chlorophyll content) value at moderate salt stress but a greater reduction in SPAD values at high salt stress than tolerant ones. Salt-sensitive genotypes were affected more in their straw yield and finally grain yield plants-1 under saline conditions than salt-tolerant genotypes. There was a highly significant negative correlation between grain yield and Na content and also a highly significant negative correlation between grain yield and K : Na content of the wheat genotypes under saline environments. We also observed stress susceptibility index (SSI) based on grain yield plant-1 the order of tolerance was BAW 1135 > Shatabdi > BARI Gom 26 > BAW 1122 at moderate salinity level and BAW 1135 > Shatabdi > BAW 1122 > BARI Gom 26 at high salinity

A simple and sensitive method was applied for determination and extraction of trace level palladium(II)in wastewater by using functionalized mesoporous silica based fine-tuning mesoporous adsorbent. Theadsorbent was stable and easy to detect, adsorb and recover Pd(II) ions by charge transfer (intense p–ptransition) complexation mechanism. The optimum experimental conditions such as pH, contact time,initial concentration, selectivity and sensitivity, type and amount of eluent for elution and various ionicinterferences on detection and sorption were systematically evaluated. The determined maximumsorption capacity was 191.35 mg/g. The proposed method was applied successfully for extraction ofPd(II) in environmental wastewater samples.

This study examined the encapsulation of submicron-sized silica particles by stimuli-responsive copolymer shell layer. Silica/poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate-N-isopropylacrylamide-ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate),abbreviated as silica/P(DM-NIPAM-EGDM) core-shell composite polymer particles, were prepared by the seeded copolymerization of DM, NIPAM and EGDM in the presence of silica particles. The morphology and size distribution were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. The surface composition showed silica particles covered with a copolymer shell layer consisting of P(DM-NIPAM-EGDM). The temperature and pH dependent adsorption behavior of the low molecular weight surfactants and biomolecules on the silica/P(DM-NIPAM-EGDM) composite polymer particles indicated a stimuli-responsive phase transition. The activity of the adsorbed trypsin (TR) on the composite particles remained high compared to the free TR and adsorbed TR on silica particles.

A novel slotted-core hexagonal photonic crystal fiber (PCF) for terahertz (THz) wave guiding is proposedin this paper. A trade-off managed between effective material loss (EML) and birefringence for efficientguidance of THz waves is illustrated in this article. The rectangular slot shaped air-holes break the symmetryof the porous-core which offers ultra-high birefringence of 8.8 × 10-2. The proposed structure offers lowbending loss of 1.07 × 10-34 cm-1 and extremely low effective material loss (EML) of 0.035 cm-1 at anoperating frequency of 1.0 THz. In addition other guiding properties such as power fraction, dispersionand confinement loss are also discussed. The proposed THz waveguide can be effectively used for convenienttransmission of THz waves.
