Photoperiod is believed to regulate growth in fish, although the mechanism involved is still unclear. In this paper, we report a relationship between leptin-receptor A1 (AsLRa1), melatonin-receptor (AsMR) and photoperiod in Atlantic salmon. Atlantic salmon (mean weight 1071.70 ± 155.54 g) were reared under six photoperiod regimes, four constant light regimes 24L:0D, 18L:6D, 12L:12D and 8L:16D, hours of light (L) and dark (D) and two varying light regimes, LL-SL = 24L:0D-8L:16D, and SL-LL = 8L:16D-24L:0D over a period of seven months. The results showed that AsLRa1 transcripts were mainly existed in the hypothalamus and saccus vasculosus (SV), AsMR was mainly expressed in the hypothalamus. Long photoperiod inhibited the expression of AsLRa1 and AsMR transcripts in the Atlantic salmon brain. The expression pattern of AsLRa1 was similar to the expression pattern of AsMR in the hypothalamus. Food intake was higher in fish with lower AsLRa1 transcript levels. This demonstrated that photoperiod influenced somatic growth by changing expression of AsLRa1 in the hypothalamus and SV to affect appetite. In addition, we found that the SV appears to act as a seasonal sensor regulating reproduction in a similar way to the hypothalamus.

Glycogen plays important roles in bacteria. Its structure and storage capability have received more attention recently because of the potential correlations with environmental durability and pathogenicity. However, the low level of intracellular glycogen makes extraction and structure characterization difficult, inhibiting functional studies. Bacteria grown in regular media such as lysogeny broth and tryptic soy broth do no accumulate large amounts of glycogen. Comparative analyses of bacterial media reported in literature for glycogen-related studies revealed that there was no consistency in the recipes reported. Escherichia coli DH5α is a convenient model organism for gene manipulation studies with respect to glycogen. Additionally, M9 minimal salts medium is widely used to improve glycogen accumulation, although its composition varies. In this study, we optimized the M9 medium by adjusting the concentrations of itrogen source, tryptone, carbon source, and glucose, in order to achieve a balance between the growth rate and glycogen accumulation. Our result showed that 1 × M9 minimal salts medium containing 0.4% tryptone and 0.8% glucose was a well-balanced nutrient source for enhancing the growth and glycogen storage in bacteria. This result will help future investigations related to bacterial physiology in terms of glycogen function.

In this study, we propose an analytical model for studying magnetic fields in radial-flux permanent-magnet eddy-current couplings by considering the effects of slots and iron-core protrusions on the eddy currents. We focus on the analytical prediction of the air-gap field by considering the influence of eddy currents induced in conducting bars. In the proposed model, the permanent magnet region is treated as the source of a timevarying magnetic field and the moving-conductor eddy current problem is solved based on the resolution of time-harmonic Helmholtz equations. The spatial harmonics in the air gap and in slots, as well as the time harmonics are all considered in the analytical calculation. Based on the proposed field model, the electromagnetic torque is computed by using the Maxwell stress tensor method. Nonlinear finite element analysis is performed to validate the analytical model. The proposed model can be used for permanent-magnet eddy-current couplings with any slot?pole combination.
Effects of Zeolites on Thermal Stability of Poly(vinyl chloride)
Jiayou Xu,Qinghua Liang,Xiumei Xian,Kaidan Li,Jie Liu 한국고분자학회 2015 폴리머 Vol.39 No.1
The effects of zeolite on the thermal stability of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) were investigated by the static thermal stability test, pyrolysis experiment and ultraviolet spectrum. The results showed that the porous zeolite could absorb hydrogen chloride (HCl), which suppressed the catalysis of HCl on thermal degradation of PVC, thus improved the thermal stability of PVC. The oxidizing acid which was loaded on zeolite had oxidated on the double bond that formed during the dehydrochlorination of PVC. This process could prohibit the growth of the conjugated polyene and improved the color of PVC. Hence, zeolite might be possible to come up with a high performance thermal stabilizer.
Design of a Rotary Electromagnetic Actuator with Linear Torque Output for Fast Steering Mirror
Yongjun Long,Jinqiu Mo,Xinshu Chen,Qinghua Liang,Yaguang Shang,Shigang Wang 한국자기학회 2015 Journal of Magnetics Vol.20 No.1
This paper focuses on the design of a flux-biased rotary electromagnetic actuator with compact structure for fast steering mirror (FSM). The actuator has high force density and its torque output shows linear dependence on both excitation current and rotation angle. Benefiting from a new electromagnetic topology, no additional axial force is generated and an armature with small moment of inertia is achieved. To improve modeling accuracy, the actuator is modeled with flux leakage taken into account. In order to achieve an FSM with good performance, a design methodology is presented. The methodology aims to achieve a balance between torque output, torque density and required coil magnetomotive force. By using the design methodology, the actuator which will be used to drive our FSM is achieved. The finite element simulation results validate the design results, along with the concept design, magnetic analysis and torque output model.
