<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Fast ionic conduction through strain engineered heteroepitaxial film have been demonstrated well. However, this effect in the preferentially orientated film remains to be unexplored. Here, we report the effect of interatomic distance between cation-oxygen bonds on the oxygen ionic transport in preferetially (111) oriented Ce<SUB>0.80</SUB>Sm<SUB>0.1</SUB>M<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB> (M = Gd, Nd, Pr, La) film over an amorphous quartz substrate. With the increase in ionic radii of dopant cation, the films exhibited a substantial increase in tensile strain with a change in lattice constant (Δ<I>a</I>) in the order of ∼1.14% (Δ<I>a</I>: 1.14% (Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> + La<SUP>3+</SUP>) > 1.04% (Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> + Pr<SUP>3+</SUP>) > 0.69% (Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> + Nd<SUP>3+</SUP>) > 0.14% (Sm<SUP>3+</SUP>) > 0.08% (Sm<SUP>3+</SUP> + Gd<SUP>3+</SUP>)) has strong influence on defect association enthalpy (ΔH<SUB>a</SUB>) leading to the change in migration energy of oxygen ion during conduction process. Highest conductivity was observed from Ce<SUB>0.85</SUB>Sm<SUB>0.1</SUB>Nd<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB>, which is four times greater than that of Ce<SUB>0.85</SUB>Sm<SUB>0.2</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB>. As a consequence, it is clear that optimum co-dopant is needed to attain the critical ionic radii/tensile strain to achieve the maximum ionic conductivity in the preferentially oriented ceria-based thin film. This work demonstrates the importance of tuning the ionic radii of dopant cation, which can effectively facilitate the optimum expansion of lattice to attain the fast ionic conduction process in (111) oriented thin film based solid electrolyte.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Nondestructive quality evaluation of periodically poled lithium niobate crystals by diffraction

<P>Quasi-phase-matching devices are usually fabricated by electric field poling over photolithographically defined electrode patterns on ferroelectric crystal substrates. For the optimal nonlinear optical performance of such devices, the micro-poled domain structure must ensure good fidelity to the designed grating structure. We present a nondestructive diffraction method to evaluate the quality of periodically poled lithium niobate crystals, by utilizing index modulation caused by the internal field effects. Our proposed method is much simpler than the conventional second-harmonic generation experiment, and provides a fast, low-cost but accurate means for micro-poling quality evaluation.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology, nanocomposite membrane has a great potential to improve the filtration performance and antifouling. However, antibacterial activity of nanoparticles (NPs) is a significant disadvantage which can be impacted to bacterial growth and microbial community in MBRs. The modified polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in the study were prepared by using TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs and TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs functionalized with sulfonation (STiO<SUB>2</SUB>). The antibacterial effect of NPs and non-toxic properties of nanocomposite membranes were examined by using three different Gram-negative bacterial species isolated from a local full scale membrane bioreactor treating municipal wastewater (<I>Escherichia coli, Pantoea agglomerans</I>, and <I>Pseudomonas graminis</I>). Results are revealed that the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and STiO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs have 60% of antibacterial activity based on disc diffusion, viability tests, and TEM analysis. However, the PES-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and PES-STiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanocomposite UF membranes showed significantly lower antibacterial activity (<95%, significance at <I>p</I> < 0.0001), indicating innocuous to bacterial growth. This study highlights that the PES-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and PES-STiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanocomposite membrane is more sustainable than PES membrane and promising materials for MBRs, by taking advantage of non-toxic properties to bacterial growth.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and STiO<SUB>2</SUB> NPs showed 60% of antibacterial activity in all three bacterial species. </LI> <LI> PES-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and -STiO<SUB>2</SUB> membranes revealed 95% non-toxic in bacterial cell viability test. </LI> <LI> PES-TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and -STiO<SUB>2</SUB> UF membranes are sustainable materials for MBR system. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Emerging Research Advancements to Overcome the Peach Spring Frost

The phenomena of global warming has led to an increase in the average air temperature in temperate climates. Springtime frost damage is becoming more common, and after a period of dormancy, damage to buds, blooms, and developing fruits is greater significant than damage from low winter temperatures. Peaches are a crucial crop among moderate fruits. Spring frost damage in peaches can have a negative effect on crop growth, yield, and quality. It is noteworthy that these plants have evolved defenses against spring frost damage while being exposed to a variety of low temperatures in the early spring. In this current review, recent research advancements on spring frost damage avoidance in peaches were deliberated. Additionally, adaptive mechanisms of peach, such as deacclimation and reacclimation, were emphasized. Moreover, the emerging advancements using various omics approaches revealed the peach physiology and molecular mechanisms comprehensively. Furthermore, the use of chemical products and understanding the spring frost mechanisms through the use of environmental chamber temperature stimulation and infrared thermography studies were also discussed. This review is essential groundwork and paves the way to derive and design future research for agronomists and horticulturalists to overcome the challenges of spring frost damage avoidance and crop management in these circumstances.

Laboratory experiment was conducted to compare the relative toxicity of biopesticides like Pseudomonas fluorescens strain pf1 and neem oil with imidacloprid, quinalphos, and endosulfan against an egg parasitoid, Trichogramma chilonis, and a predatory green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea. Biopesticides were safer than chemical insecticides in minimizing harmful effects on development and behavior of two natural enemies. P. fluorescens treatment recorded high parasitism (≈73%) and parasitoid egg development (≈72%) of T. chilonis. It also gave high egg (≈75%) development on C. carnea. Neem oil recorded 58.9 % parasitoid emecrgence, and 59.3 % parasitism, and 63.1 % egg hathability. Other chemical insecticides exhibited high damages on the natural enemies.
Poling Quality Evaluation of Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Using Diffraction Method

We demonstrated a simple way of evaluating the duty cycle error in periodically polled lithium niobate (PPLN) based on the method of binary phase diffraction grating. To demonstrate this method, –Z face etched PPLN of desired periods were fabricated by the standard electric field poling technique. The etched PPLN was considered as a surface–relief binary phase grating. The diffraction patterns were recorded for different spatial locations along the length of the sample. The experimentally observed efficiencies of the diffracted orders were compared with the theoretically calculated values to estimate the duty cycle error.

This paper presents the concerns in manufacturing supply chain. Further this study investigates the role of information technology (IT) and information sharing (IS) in manufacturing supply chain and determines its impact towards supply chain integration (SCI), supply chain performance (SCP), and manufacturing firm performance (FP) in Malaysia. The theoretical framework was proposed for the study on the basis of existing literature. The study administered a survey questionnaire to collect data from manufacturing firms in Malaysia with 112 respondents. A multiple regression analysis is conducted to establish the relationship between IT, IS, SCI, and FP. The study finds that IT and sharing has significant positive effect towards and performance. Firms that use IT and practice IS across partners in the supply chain are more likely to integrate their internal and external value chain for better performance both within and across the manufacturing firms in the supply chain. This study can be of interest to the manufacturing industry as well as other industry practitioners interested in improving the performance of the organization and supply chain in total. For supply chain practitioners, this results indicate that the firms should adopt IT and IS practices to strategically improve SCI. This in turn will also improve the supply chain network and firm’s performance. This study employs a newly developed framework which depicts the causal relationship between IT, IS, SCI, Supply Chain Performance, and FP in Malaysia. Furthermore, it closes a gap in existing literature by examining the effect IT and communication (ICT) practices toward manufacturing firms’ performance and SCP in a single setting. In addition, the current study attempted to construct a model which would estimate and interpret SCP and FP simultaneously, and to evaluate this model in an empirical fashion.
