The Role of Non-Governmental Organizations in the Climate Change Response Policies in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

        Ngo Hoai Son,김판석 한국외국어대학교 동남아연구소 2023 東南亞硏究 Vol.33 No.2

NGOs play a crucial role in climate change response strategies in Vietnam through their involvement in policymaking. This study reviews the areas of NGO engagement in climate change policies in the context of Ho Chi Minh City, and presents suggestions for improving their participation. Based on the theory of climate services, it employed a content analysis technique using NVivo 11 software to examine the participation of 30 registered NGOs. The results indicate that engagement in climate change response policies is comparable to that reported in other studies on the same topic. NGO participation in the implementation of climate change response policies focuses primarily on policy lobbying, community capacity building, research and consultation, and livelihood development. NGOs have played a crucial role in assisting and supporting the most severely affected communities by helping people consolidate and enhance their capacity to adjust to the effects of climate change through adaptation measures, disaster preparedness, and capacity building.

      • The Cham (Champa) Traders and the Trade Route from the Central Coastal to the Highland of Vietnam

Ngo Van Le 조선대학교 국제문화연구원 2015 국제문화연구 Vol.8 No.2

It is not found any previous study on the Cham traders and the trade routes from the Central Coast to the Highlands of Vietnam. Taken just few scattered and related ancient documents, the authors have conducted some field surveys and researches of the local ethnic groups in the Highlands since 2013. Their moves aim at learning about the relationships and the trade routes connecting the Cham people and other ethnic minority people in the Central Highlands. The article is considered as one of the initial research outcomes. In this article, we identify the evidence of the Cham-Thuong relationships and their trade routes. It is the route along the main rivers, in parallel with the French-build railway in Highland and plenty of roads explored by both the minority people and Cham people through the historical periods.

      • Discovery of New Triterpenoid Saponins Isolated from <i>Maesa japonica</i> with Antifungal Activity against Rice Blast Fungus <i>Magnaporthe oryzae</i>

Ngo, Men Thi,Han, Jae Woo,Yoon, Sunggeon,Bae, Sohyun,Kim, Soo-Young,Kim, Hun,Choi, Gyung Ja American Chemical Society 2019 Journal of agricultural and food chemistry Vol.67 No.27

<P>While searching for new antifungal compounds, we revealed that a methanol extract of plant species <I>Maesa japonica</I> has a potent antifungal activity <I>in vivo</I> against rice blast fungus <I>Magnaporthe oryzae</I>. To identify the antifungal substances, the methanol extract of <I>M. japonica</I> was extracted by organic solvents, and consequently, six active compounds were isolated from the <I>n</I>-butanol layer. The isolated compounds were five new acylated triterpenoid saponins including maejaposide I (<B>1</B>), maejaposides C-1, C-2, and C-3 (<B>2</B>-<B>4</B>), and maejaposide A-1 (<B>5</B>), along with a known one, maejaposide A (<B>6</B>). These chemical structures were determined by NMR and a comparison of their NMR and MS data with those reported in the literature. Based on the <I>in vitro</I> antifungal bioassay, the five compounds (<B>2</B>-<B>6</B>) exhibited strong antifungal activity against <I>M. oryzae</I> with MIC values ranging from 4 to 32 μg/mL, except for maejaposide I (<B>1</B>) (MIC > 250 μg/mL). When the compounds were evaluated at concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 μg/mL for an <I>in vivo</I> antifungal activity against rice blast, compounds <B>2</B>-<B>6</B> strongly reduced the development of blast by at least 85% to 98% compared to the untreated control. However, compound <B>1</B> did not show any <I>in vivo</I> antifungal activity up to a concentration of 500 μg/mL. Taken together, our results suggest that the methanol extract of <I>M. japonica</I> and the new acylated triterpenoid saponins can be used as a source for the development of natural fungicides.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • Highly biocompatible phenylboronic acid-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots for the selective glucose sensor

Ngo, Yen-Linh Thi,Choi, Won Mook,Chung, Jin Suk,Hur, Seung Hyun Elsevier 2019 Sensors and actuators. B, Chemical Vol.282 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Highly biocompatible phenylboronic acid-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-CNQDs/PBA) were prepared by a simple hydrothermal process and used as a glucose sensing fluorescence material. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize chemical and physical structures of g-CNQDs/PBA. The quantum yield (QY) of g-CNQDs/PBA was as high as 67% when measured using quinine sulfate as a standard, which is the highest QY value ever reported for fluorescent g-CNQDs. The g-CNQDs/PBA exhibited two wide linear regions in the range of 25 nM – 1 μM and 1 μM – 1 mM with a detection limit as low as 16 nM. In addition, it showed excellent selectivity in the presence of various interfering reagents as well as very low cellular toxicity and excellent bio-imaging properties. Overall, the g-CNQDs/PBA fabricated in this study can be a promising candidate for a range of clinical diagnostics and biomedical applications.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Highly biocompatible g-CNQDs/PBA is fabricated through a simple hydrothermal process. </LI> <LI> The obtained material shows the highest quantum yield ever reported based on g-CNQDs. </LI> <LI> The g-CNQDs/PBA exhibits high sensitivity towards glucose with a very low detection limit. </LI> <LI> The g-CNQDs/PBA displays excellent bio-imaging features and low cytotoxicity. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>The g-CNQDs/PBA fabricated in this study exhibits highly biocompatible and excellent glucose sensing properties.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Highly porous coral-like silicon particles synthesized by an ultra-simple thermal-reduction method

        Ngo, Duc Tung,Le, Hang T. T.,Pham, Xuan-Manh,Jung, Ji-Won,Vu, Ngoc Hung,Fisher, John G.,Im, Won-Bin,Kim, Il-Doo,Park, Chan-Jin The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Journal of materials chemistry. A, Materials for e Vol.6 No.6

<P>Porous Si is considered a potential anode material for next-generation Li-ion batteries (LIBs) because of its high specific capacity, low lithiation/delithiation potential, low cost, and environmental friendliness. In this work, we introduce a simplified Mg-thermal-reduction method for the production of mass-scalable coral-like bulk-Si powder with a high surface area (38 m2 g−1), broad pore-size distribution (2-200 nm), and 3-dimensionally (3D) interconnected Si structure for application in LIBs. The porous, coral-like Si electrode delivered a high reversible capacity of 2451 mA h g−1, corresponding to ∼70% of the theoretical capacity of Si, at a rate of C/10. After 100 cycles, the porous, coral-like Si electrode maintained a capacity of 1956 mA h g−1, corresponding to 79.8% of the initial reversible capacity. Importantly, a reasonably high reversible capacity of 614 mA h g−1 was achieved even at a high rate of 10C. These outstanding results demonstrate that the 3D-networked, porous, coral-like Si powder, synthesized <I>via</I> a NaCl-assisted Mg-thermal-reduction process on a stainless-steel plate over a period of one minute, can be employed as a promising anode material for the next generation of high-energy LIBs.</P>
