Optical Properties of aerosol particles over the Western Pacific Ocean

In order to study the optical properties of aerosols over the ocean, solar radiation has been measured with a portable sunphotometer on board by the R/V Hakuho Maru. The portable sunphotometer (MS-120(S); Eko Co.) is convenient for measuring direct solar radiation on board, because it is light (1.5kg) and has a peak hold circuit. Mainly results are as follows: (1) The time variation of the calibration constant showed that we were able to measure an optical thickness in accuracy of 0.03 with the portable sunphotometer by calibrating it twice a year. (2) The time variation of the aerosol optical thickness over the Western Pacific Ocean confirmed that the effect of the Mt. Pinatubo enuptions had disappeared in the end of 1994.
Prediction of Tandem Repeat Polymorphisms in the Coding Region of Dog Genome

After the dog genome was sequenced, an increasing number of studies involving genetic research of dogs have been conducted to understand gene functions and mammalian evolution. To study the genetic diversity in dogs and other mammals, genetic markers linked to function and conserved in wide lineages are necessary. Thus far, few polymorphic markers have been used in dogs. In this study, we surveyed the entire dog genome and predicted a total of 109 tandem repeats (TRs) located on the protein coding region that may be polymorphic by our prediction model. We selected 10 TRs that may be related to neurophysiology and neural developments, and tested them in 167 individuals of 8 dog breeds: 5 European dog breeds (Beagle, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, and Toy Poodle) and 3 Japanese dog breeds (Japanese Spitz, Shiba, and Shikoku). Among the tested TRs, nine were polymorphic indicating that 90% of the TRs were successfully predicted to be polymorphic. PCR fragments of the TRs were amplified from dog brain cDNA, showing their expression in the dog brain. Our results provide abundant opportunities for the study of phenotypic variations in dogs, and our prediction method for variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs) can be applied to any other animal genome sequences for the survey of functional and polymorphic markers.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The southern part of the Outer Zone of Southwest Japan including the Kii peninsula belongs to the tectonic ‘shadow zone’, where fewer conspicuous active faults and less Quaternary sediments develop than in the Nankai subduction zone and Inner Zone of Southwest Japan. In order to study the paleostress sequence of the Kii peninsula, we analyzed fault‐slip data and tension gashes at pilot sites of Early–Middle Miocene forearc sediments and Late Cretaceous accretionary complex. According to the results, six faulting events are reconstructed in sequence: (i) east–west extension (normal faulting); (ii) east–west compression and north–south extension (strike‐slip faulting); (iii) NNW–SSE compression and ENE–WSW extension (strike‐slip faulting); (iv) northeast–southwest compression and northwest–southeast extension (strike‐slip faulting); (v) WNW–ESE compression (strike‐slip or reverse faulting); and (vi) NNE–SSW extension. The north–south to NNW–SSE trending dyke swarm of Middle Miocene age in the Kii peninsula is thought to be related to Event 3, implying that Event 3 was active at least during the Middle Miocene. Because Event 6 is recognized solely at a site, the overall latest faulting event seems to be Event 5. Assuming that the compression results from the motion of the crust or plate, the compression direction of Event 5 is in good accordance with the present‐day WNW crustal velocity vectors of the Kii peninsula. The stress trajectory map of Southeast Korea and Southwest Japan reveals that the current compression directions of the Kii peninsula correspond to the combinatory stress fields of the Himalayan and Philippine Sea tectonic domains.</P>

Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is the 11th member of IL-1 cytokine family which includes IL-1 and IL-18. Unlike IL-1β and IL-18, IL-33 is suggested to function as an alarmin that is released upon endothelial or epithelial cell damage and may not enhance acquired immune responses through activation of inflammasome. ST2, a IL-33 receptor component, is preferentially expressed by T-helper type (Th) 2 cells, mast cells, eosinophils and basophils, compared to Th1 cells, Th17 cells and neutrophils. Thus, IL-33 profoundly enhances allergic inflammation through increased expression of proallergic cytokines and chemokines. Indeed, IL-33 and its receptor genes are recognized as the most susceptible genes for asthma by several recent genome-wide association studies. It has also recently been shown that IL-33 plays a crucial role in innate eosinophilic airway inflammation rather than acquired immune responses such as IgE production. As such, IL-33 provides a unique therapeutic way for asthma, i.e., ameliorating innate airway inflammation.
