        The Evolving Policy Debate on Border Closure in Korea

Methods: We collated and reviewed previously conducted review studies on border closures during infectious disease outbreaks to derive relevant themes and factors. Results: According to our systematic review on border closures and travel restrictions, the effects of such containment efforts are limited. We suggest considering the following factors when determining whether to impose border closure measures: (1) disease characteristics, (2) timeliness of implementation, (3) transmission delay and the basic reproduction number, (4) globalization and pandemics, and (5) social and economic costs. Conclusions: Our assessment indicates that the effects of border closures are at best temporary and limited. Alternative measures must be contemplated and implemented to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in particular and infectious diseases more broadly.

        근막 결손의 복원과 자궁천골인대 고정을 통한 전자궁적출술 후 질탈출의 성공적 교정

        Objective : To report the method and efficacy of the site specific-defects repair in the endopelvic fascia and uterosacral ligament suspension for the correction of posthysterectomy vaginal vault prolapse. Methods : This study was performed in 3 patients with posthyterectomy vaginal vault prolapse who underwent the surgery for the reconstruction of endopelvic fascia and the correction of vault prolapsed vagina by using uterosacral ligament suspension at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Moon-Hwa Hospital. Among them, 1 patient was treated by laparotomy, and 2 patients were treated by laparoscope. Results : The age of patients ranged from 49 to 67 years. The mean operation time was 111 minutes (105-120 minutes). The status of postoperative vagina was normal in all 3 patients, who were discharged 9 days after operation without symptoms. No complication or recurrence were found in them despite long-term follow-up for 24 months, 12 months, 7 months, respectively after operation. One patient has been treated with HRT therapy. Conclusion : The reconstruction of the defect of endopelvic fascia and uterosacral ligament fixation may be very safe, effective, and functional in the correction of vaginal vault prolapse. This study reports the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse using uterosacral ligament within Korea for the first time.

        달 궤도 진입 목표값 변화에 따른 궤도요소 변화 연구

        Korea Aerospace Research Institute(here after KARI) has a plan to launch experimental lunar orbiter in 2018, and lunar orbiter and lander in 2020. There are several ways to go to the moon. Which one is direct transfer trajectory and another one is phasing loop transfer trajectory and the other one is WSB trajectory. Regardless of the transfer trajectories, LOI maneuver is the most important maneuver of all mission sequences because if this burn is failed, it is too difficult to get into the lunar orbit in the future. This paper describes first LOI target value of foreign lunar orbiters and analyzes orbital variations of experimental lunar orbiter according to various target values. By analyzing the variation of orbiter parameter after first LOI, proper orbital period for LOI target value are recommended to meet the inclination, apoapsis and periapsis altitude constraints.

        시험용 달 궤도선의 발사 요구조건 사전 분석 단계로 최근 외국에서 발사한 달 탐사선의 발사 요구조건을 분석하였다. 일반적으로 달 탐사선의 발사 요구조건은 달 임무 궤도를 결정하는 중요한 요소이며, 또한 지구, 달, 태양의 상대적인 운동으로 인해 임무궤도 요구조건을 만족하는 발사 가능 시간이 주기적으로 반복되는 경향이 있다. 분석 결과 설정된 발사 요구조건들로부터 달 궤도선의 주 임무가 달의 남/북극 지역의 광학 관측 임을 간접적으로 알 수 있었다. 향후 우리나라 달 궤도선 발사 요구 조건 설정에 본 논문이 도움이 되길 기대한다. In the preliminary study on launch window requirement for Korea Path-finder Lunar Orbiter(KPLO), the recent foreign lunar orbiter’s lauch window requirement was analyzed. Normally, the launch requirements depends on the mission orbit. Based on the relationship between Moon, Earth, and Sun, the launch time will be available periodically to meet requirements. In this paper, it is understood that the launch window requirements come from payload mission requirements to take picture each poles of Moon. This paper might be a practical example to derive KPLO launch requirements in the future.

        대나무 숯과 대나무 잎의 급여가 육계의 생산성과 육질에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 대나무 숯과 대나무 잎의 급여가 육계의 성장과 사료효율 및 육질에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위해 30일간 각각 0.5%의 농도로 급여하였다. 시험결과, 대숯과 대잎 시험군에서 시험기간 중 사망률은 대조군에 비해 낮아진 반면, 출하 시 체중과 증체량은 대조군에 비해 유의성 있게 증가하였다. 또한 대조군에 비해 대숯과 대잎 시험군의 사료효율도 개선되었으며, 계육의 전단력은 대조군에 비해 유의성 있게 감소하였다. 대숯을 급여한 닭에서의 지방함량은 통계학적 차이는 없었으나 감소경향을 나타낸 반면, 대숯과 대잎을 급여한 닭에서의 불포화 지방산 비율은 증가경향을 나타내었다. 계육의 관능검사 결과, 대숯과 대잎 시험군의 선호도는 대조군에 비해 높게 나타났다. 혈액 및 혈청생화학 검사항목에서는 대조군과 시험군간에 유의성 있는 차이가 인정되지 않았다. 본 시험결과는 대나무 숯과 대나무 잎의 사료첨가 급여가 육계의 성장과 사료효율 및 육질을 개선시키는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구결과는 사료첨가제로서 대나무 숯과 대나무 잎의 유용성과 개발가능성을 시사해 주고 있다. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with bamboo charcoal (BC) and bamboo leaf (BL) on growth performance, feed intake, feed conversion efficiency, and meat quality in broiler chickens. Broiler chickens were fed for 30 days with a diet containing 0.5% bamboo charcoal or bamboo leaf. The results showed that the mortality rate during the study period was slightly lower in the BC and BL groups than the control group, while terminal weight and weight gain were significantly higher in the BC and BL groups than the control group. Dietary supplementation with BC or BL also improved feed conversion rate compared to chickens in the control group. Shear force was significantly lower in the BC and BL groups than that of the control group. The fat content of chickens fed with BC tended to decrease, while the ratio of unsaturated fat acid of chickens fed with BC or BL tended to increase, although without a statistically significant difference. Sensory evaluation revealed that overall acceptability was slightly higher in the BC and BL groups than the control group. There was no statistically significant change in the hematology and serum biochemistry parameters, compared with the control group in any group tested. The results of this experiment indicated that dietary supplementation with BC and BL may improve growth performance, feed conversion efficiency, and meat quality in broiler chickens.

        Deep Drawing With Internal Air-Pressing to Increase The Limit Drawing Ratio of Aluminum Sheet

        The effects of internal air-pressing on deep drawability are investigated in this study to increase the deep drawability of aluminum sheet. The conventional deep drawing process is limited to a certain limit drawing ratio(LDR) beyond which failure will occur. The intention of this work is to examine the possibilities of relaxing the above limitation through the deep drawing with internal air-pressing, aiming towards a process with an increased drawing ratio. The idea which may lead to this goal is the use of special punch that can exert high pressure on the internal surface of deforming sheet during the deep drawing process. Over the ranges of conditions investigated for Al-1050, the local strain concentration at punch nose radius area was decreased by internal air-pressing of punch, and the deep drawing with internal air-pressing was proved to be very effective process for obtaining higher LDR.

      • Functional Screening for Cell Death Suppressors and Development of Multiple Stress-Tolerant Plants

        Bax, a mammalian pro-apoptotic member of the Bcl-2 family induces cell death when expressed in yeast. To investigate whether Bax expression can induce cell death in plant, we produced transgenic Arabidopsis plants that contained murine Bax cDNA under control of a glucocorticoid-inducible promoter. Transgenic plants treated with dexamethasone, a strong synthetic glucocorticoid, induced Bax accumulation and cell death, suggesting that some elements of cell death mechanism by Bax may be conserved among various organisms. Therefore, we developed novel yeast genetic system, and cloned several Plant Bax Inhibitors (PBIs). Here, we report the function of two PBIs in detail. PBI1 is ascorbate peroxidase (sAPX). Fluorescence method of dihydrorhodamine123 oxidation revealed that expression of Bax in yeast cells generated reactive oxygen species (ROS), and which was greatly reduced by co-expression with sAPX. These results suggest that sAPX inhibits the generation of ROS by Bax, which in turn suppresses Baxinduced cell death in yeast. PBI2 encodes nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK). ROS stress strongly induces the expression of the NDPK2 gene in Arabidopsis thaliana (AtNDPK2). Transgenic plants overexpressing AtNDPK2 have lower levels of ROS than wildtype plants. Mutants lacking AtNDPK2 had higher levels of ROS than wildtype. $H_2O_2$ treatment induced the phosphorylation of two endogenous proteins whose molecular weights suggested they are AtMPK3 and AtMPK6. In the absence of $H_2O_2$ treatment, phosphorylation of these proteins was slightly elevated in plants overexpressing AtNDPK2 but markedly decreased in the AtNDPK2 deletion mutant. Yeast two-hybrid and in vitro protein pull-down assays revealed that AtNDPK2 specifically interacts with AtMPK3 and AtMPK6. Furthermore, AtNDPK2 also enhances the MSP phosphorylation activity of AtMPK3 in vitro. Finally, constitutive overexpression of AtNDPK2 in Arabidopsis plants conferred an enhanced tolerance to multiple environmental stresses that elicit ROS accumulation in situ. Thus, AtNDPK2 appears to playa novel regulatory role in $H_2O_2$-mediated MAPK signaling in plants.

      • Gate Length Optimization for Minimum Forward Voltage Drop of IGBTs

        The forward voltage drop of IGBT is studied numerically and analytically as a function of gate length. An analytical expression is presented for the first time for the surface potential variation along the channel layer under the gate of IGBT. The surface potential drop and the carrier density near the surface allow calculation of the forward voltage drop of IGBT analytically as a function of the gate length. The voltage-drop in the drift region near the gate decreases exponentially, whereas that on the surface increases linearly with increasing the gate length, the sum of which exhibits an optimum gate length, resulting in a minimum forward voltage drop. Based on the surface potential drop, a remodelling of the forward voltage drop of IGBT is also proposed.

        Background/Aims: Potential risk of seeding of malignant cells during procedure including submucosal injection is one of our concerns in incomplete endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). The present study investigated the outcome of gastrectomy after incomplete EMR for early gastric cancer (EGC). Methods: We analyzed 54 consecutive patients with EGC treated surgically after incomplete EMR or gastric wall perforation. EMR was performed between Jan. 1997 and Dec. 2005. We classified the incomplete EMR as the positive lateral margin; positive vertical margin including sub-mucosal invasion; positive both margins; undifferentiated histologic type. After gastrectomy, follow-up consisted of endoscopy and abdominal computed tomography annually. Results: Of the 54 patients, 37 patients were men and 17, women. Median patient age was 63 years (range 34-81 years). Causes of gastrectomy were as follows: 24 cases of positive lateral margin; 20 cases of positive vertical margin; 4 cases of positive both margins; 3 cases of undifferentiated histologic type; 3 cases of gastric wall perforation. Curative resection with LN dissection was performed in 53 patients and one patient underwent wedge resection, 2 patients (3.7%) had LN metastasis, they both underwent gastrectomy for submucosal invasion. There was one case of recurrence after gastrectomy (1.9%). He received EMR for 1.6cm sized moderately differentiated EGC and underwent surgery 2 days later when the result of mucosectomy revealed submucosal invasion. There was no regional LN metastasis out of 11 dissected LN. 5 years 10 months after surgery, hepatic metastasis and lymphadenopathy along heptoduodenal ligament were noted which proved to be metastatic adenocarcinoma by pathology. Despite receiving chemotherapy, be died 21 months after recurrence. Recurrence rate in patients with EGC who had been operated in our hospital between 1990 and 1997 was reported to be 4.1%. Conclusions: This study suggests that incomplete EMR dose not affect the prognosis of early gastric cancer surgery.

        Prototypes of Panaxadiol and Panaxatriol Saponins Suppress LPS-mediated iNOS/NO Production in RAW264.7 Murine Macrophage Cells

        본 연구는 RAW264.7 세포에서 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) 처리에 의한 염증매개인자의 유도에 대한 고려인삼 사포닌 분획인 20(S)-protopanaxadiol saponins (PDS)과 20(S)-protopanaxatriol saponins (PTS)의 조절효능을 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 RAW264.7 세포에 PDS 또는 PTS를 150 μg/ml의 농도로 LPS (10 μg/ml) 처리 이전이나 처리 이후 또는 LPS와 동시에 처리하였으며, 처리된 세포에서 nitric oxide (NO)의 방출량, 유도성 nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) 및 cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2)의 발현 량을 분석하였다. PDS에 비하여 PTS는 RAW264.7 세포에 LPS와 동시에 처리하여 24시간 동안 배양했을 때 LPS 처리에 의해 유도된 NO의 생성을 강하게 감소시켰다. RAW 264.7 세포에 LPS (10 μg/ml)를 2시간 동안 처리한 후에 PDS 또는 PTS를 150 μg/ml 농도로 24시간 동안 처리하면 두 인삼 사포닌 성분 모두 NO의 생성을 강하게 감소시켰다. RAW264.7 세포에 PDS 또는 PTS를 150 μg/ml농도로 2시간 동안 처리한 후에 LPS (10 μg/ml)를 24시간 동안 처리했을 경우에도 두 인삼 사포닌 성분 모두 LPS 처리에 의해 유도된 NO 생성을 강하게 감소시켰다. LPS 처리에 의한 NO 생성을 저해하는 효과는 PDS에 비하여 PTS가 더 강하게 나타났다. PDS와 PTS 모두 150 μg/ml 처리농도에서 LPS (10 μg/ml)처리에 의해 유도된 iNOS와 COX-2의 발현 역시 상당히 감소시켰다. 따라서 본 연구의 결과는 RAW264.7 대식세포에서 PDS와 PTS 두 인삼 사포닌 성분은 LPS 처리에 의한 염증활성화에 강한 억제효과를 가지고 있음을 의미하며, 전염증성 효소인 iNOS와 COX-2 발현의 감소조절을 통하여 NO의 생성을 억제함으로써 항 염증효과가 나타남을 제시한다. This study was performed to investigate the modulatory effects of two prototypes of Panax ginseng saponin fractions, 20(S)-protopanaxadiol saponins (PDS) and 20(S)-protopanaxatriol saponins (PTS), on the induction of inflammatory mediators in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW264.7 murine macrophage cells. For this purpose, RAW264.7 cells were treated with LPS (10 μg/ml) before, after, or simultaneously with PDS or PTS (150 μg/ml), and the released level of nitric oxide (NO) and expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) were evaluated. When RAW264.7 cells were treated with LPS and ginseng saponin fractions simultaneously for 24 hr, PTS, compared to PDS, more strongly attenuated the NO production induced by LPS treatment. When the cells were pretreated with LPS for 2 hr followed by PDS or PTS treatment for 24 hr, both ginseng saponins strongly reduced NO release. The pretreatment of RAW264.7 cells with PDS or PTS for 2 hr followed by LPS treatment for 24 hr significantly attenuated the LPS-induced production of NO. PTS showed stronger inhibitory potency to NO generation than PDS. Our western blot experiment showed that both PDS and PTS (150 μg/ml) also significantly down-regulated the expressions of iNOS and COX-2 induced by LPS treatment. Our results suggest that both PDS and PTS possess strong protective effects against LPS-stimulated inflammation and that their protective effects are mediated by the suppression of NO synthesis via down-regulation of pro-inflammatory enzymes, iNOS, and COX-2 in the RAW264.7 cells.
