        Solubility of ethylene in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone: Experimental study and estimation of UNIQUAC activity model parameters

        The solubility of ethylene in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) was evaluated at different temperatures, including 278.2, 298.2, and 328.2 K, and different pressures in an experimental pressure decaying setup. The kinetic and equilibrium results were obtained for pure gas absorption. Henry’s law constants were calculated at different temperatures. Eventually, thermodynamic modeling was done using Peng Robinson equation of state (PR-EOS) and UNIQUAC activity coefficient model. The binary interaction parameters, 12, 21, were adjusted and optimized. Regarding the values obtained for binary interaction parameters, it was concluded that this solution has non-ideal behavior. Indeed, because of its low prediction error (3-11%), it was concluded that the correlated thermodynamic model could accurately predict the experimental data.

        Evaluation of combined efficiency of conventional coagulationflocculation process with advanced oxidation process (sulfate-hydroxyl radical) in leachate treatment

        This study evaluated a novel municipal solid waste leachate (MSWL) treatment system called the Batch flow leachate treatment system (BFLTS). This process uses a combination of coagulation/flocculation (C-F), advanced oxidation (sulfate-hydroxyl radical), and extended aeration of activated sludge (EAAS) to treat MSWL. The results indicated that the primary treatment phase using coagulation/flocculation with 0.8 g L<SUP>-1</SUP> FeCl₃ at pH 6 achieved 67% turbidity and 63% chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction. The secondary treatment phase with the presence of both K₂S₂O<SUB>8</SUB> and H₂O₂ peroxides was more efficient than single peroxide processes. While PS-based or H₂O₂-based single peroxide processes are less effective (UV-PS 65.7%, UV-H₂O₂ 43.2%, Heat-PS 58.6%, Heat-H₂O₂ 34.5%, and Heat-PS/H₂O₂ 74.8%). The UV-PS/H₂O₂ system achieved the highest COD removal rate of 89.4%. In the third treatment phase, the efficient removal of COD and Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) under optimal operating conditions was 87.3% and 94.7% respectively. Overall, the BFLTS treatment system has demonstrated high efficiency in removing COD, BOD, TSS, Turbidity, TKN, and Heavy metals by 99%, 98%, 97%, 89%, 86%, and 98%, respectively. This hybrid process has potential for reducing organic load in MSWL and can be used for various leachates.

      • Esophageal, Gastric and Duodenal disorders : Migraine Headache And Peptic Ulcer Diseased In Children

        Background/Aims: Although correlation between migraine headache and GI symptoms were reported, they did not significantly support the correlation between migraine headache and mucosal inflammation or peptic ulcer diseases. This study aimed to find such a correlation. Methods: There were 70 patients (5-15 years old) who had endoscopic documented mucosal inflammation or peptic ulcer diseases. Frequency of migraine headache in this group and a group consisting of a sample of normal population (300) who had not any GI problem in the past year was determined by a questionnaire. Results: The mean age of patients was 10.34 years with male to female ratio of 4:3. Frequency of migraine headache, esophagitis, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenitis, and duodenal ulcer was 22.9%, 68.6%, 92.9%, 4.3%, 24.3% and 4.3%, respectively. Regarding frequency of migraine headache among the normal population which was 12.4%, the frequency of migraine headache among patients with mucosal inflammation and peptic ulcer diseases of the upper GI tract, which was 22.9% showed significant statistical correlation. A significant correlation was seen between migraine and esophagitis and also between migraine headache and gastritis. Conclusions: The presence of significant correlation between migraine headache and mucosal inflammation or peptic ulcer diseases of the upper GI tract supports some of precious studies suggested this correlation.

        Detection of Inducible Clindamycin Resistance Genes (ermA, ermB, and ermC) in Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis

        The aim of the present study was to survey the frequency of inducible and constitutive phenotypes and inducible cross-resistant genes by regulating the methylation of 23S rRNA (ermA, ermB, and ermC) and macrolide efflux-related msrA gene in Staphylococcus aureus and S. epidermidis strains. A total of 172 bacterial isolates (identified based on standard tests), were examined in this study. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by the disk diffusion method, and all isolates were evaluated with respect to inducible and constitutive phenotypes. The presence of ermA, ermB, ermC, and msrA genes was investigated by a PCR assay. The constitutive resistance phenotypes showed a higher distribution among the isolates. R phenotype was detected more among S. epidermidis isolates (46.25%). ermB, ermC, and msrA genes were detected more in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE) isolates that had R and HD phenotypes (>77% strains). The ermA gene had the lowest frequency among MRSA, MRSE, MSSA, and MSSE strains (<14% isolates). Distribution of inducible resistance genes in MRSA and MRSE strains, and possibly other species, leads to increased constitutive resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin, and other similar antibiotics. Therefore, it can be challenging to treat infections caused by these resistant strains.

        Effect of Helicobacter Pylori eradication on patients with ITP: a meta-analysis of studies conducted in the Middle East

        Background Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a bleeding disorder. Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium that is presumed to be associated with ITP and therapeutic response of patients. To evaluate the effect of H. pylori eradication on platelet count of ITP patients, we analyzed the studies conducted on the association between H. pylori infection and response to therapy in ITP patients in Western Asia focusing on the Middle East region. Methods A systematic search of databases (PubMed/Medline, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane Central) and Google Scholar search engine results was conducted up until January 2020. The keywords included in the search were Helicobacter pylori and/or H. pylori, ITP and/or immune thrombocytopenia. Results Seven studies comprising a total of 228 H. pylori-infected patients (193 with successful eradication) were included in this study. The association between H. pylori eradication and ITP was expressed as odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). The findings showed that patients who received eradication treatment for H. pylori infection had significantly higher OR (OR, 8.83; 95% CI, 2.03‒38.35; P =0.004) than those in the non-eradicated group. Conclusion Our results indicate a significant therapeutic effect of H. pylori eradication on the platelet count of patients with chronic ITP. Given the inherent limitations of this study, including the small number of patients, further studies with more patients are recommended.

        High temperature and low current density synthesis of Mn3O4 porous nano spheres: Characterization and electrochemical properties

        Uniform and single-crystalline Mn3O4 nano-spheres were synthesized by cathodic electrodeposition at high temperature (80 ℃) and low current density (0.25 mA cm-1) on steel electrode. Further the annealed samples were characterized for their structural and morphological properties by means of Xray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrum (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM),Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) studies. TEM and SEM images showed that particles have spherical shapes and the average diameter size was about 50 nm. Formation of Mn3O4 compound was confirmed from FTIR studies. The XRD pattern showed that the Mn3O4 exhibit tetragonal hausmannite structure. The results of N2 adsorption-desorption analysis indicated that Mn3O4 nanoesphere has BET surface area of about 177.6 m2 g-1 and average pore diameters of 3 and 4 nm. The possible formation mechanism of Mn3O4 nanostructures has been discussed. The supercapacitive properties of Mn3O4 sample in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte showed maximum supercapacitance of 235.4 Fg-1 at scan rate 10 mV s-1. Coulumbic efficiency could be kept about 90%during 1000 cycles at 10 mV s-1.         Interactive Effects of Nutrition Modification and Wet Cupping on Male Patients with Refractory Stable Angina

        Objectives: Routine therapies cannot control refractory stable angina, leading to a high economic burden and an impaired quality of life. Persian medicine incorporates exceptional attention to lifestyle and nutrition to prevent and treat various diseases. Previous studies have reported the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of wet cupping. The present study aims to determine the effects of nutrition and cupping on refractory stable angina patients. Methods: Forty male patients with refractory stable angina were randomly allocated to four groups, including nutrition modification based on Persian medicine, wet cupping, nutrition modification along with wet cupping, and control. The primary outcomes were the changes in pain score using a visual analog scale and quality of life using the Seattle angina questionnaire. The secondary outcomes were changes in the exercise test and blood pressure. Results: The results of the present study revealed that 30 days of treatment with nutrition modification based on Persian medicine, cupping, and modified nutrition and cupping along with standard treatment for stable angina significantly increased the patient’s quality of life and exercise test results while reducing pain, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Conclusion: Applying complementary Persian medicine methods such as nutrition modification and cupping along with the classical medical treatments may improve outcomes for refractory stable angina patients.

        Manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanowires with diameter about 30e70 nm is achieved via a two-step process: first, template-free cathodic electrodeposition from aqueous solution of Mn(NO3)2 on steel substrate and followed by heat treatment. The temperature-annealed sample was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM)methods and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The electrochemical performance of the MnO2 sample was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronopotentiometry in Na2SO4 solutions. The sample showed excellent supercapacitive behavior. The specific capacitance (SC) of 237 F g-1 in a potential window of 0e0.9V was obtained at the scan rate of 2 mV s-1. The SC calculated from the chronopotentiometry data is about 246 F g-1. The SC was decreased by 16% after 1000 cycles.
