Temporal changes in mortality impacts of heat wave and cold spell in Korea and Japan

        Lee, Whanhee,Choi, Hayon Michelle,Lee, Jae Young,Kim, Da Hye,Honda, Yasushi,Kim, Ho Elsevier 2018 Environment international Vol.116 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Investigating how well people adapt to heat waves and cold spells has been an important issue under climate change. Also, most of previous studies focused only on the mortality risks for heat waves or cold spells for certain time period not considering its temporal changes and increasing frequencies. This study investigated the change in risks of mortality from heat waves and cold spells over time, and estimated the temporal changes in mortality burden attributed to heat waves and cold spells in Korea and Japan. We collected time-series data covering mortality and weather variables from 53 communities in the two countries from 1992 to 2015. Two-stage time-series regression with a time-varying distributed lag model and meta-analysis was used to assess the impacts of heat waves and cold spells by period (1990s, 2000s, and 2010s). In total population, the risks of heat waves have decreased over time; however their mortality burden increased in the 2010s compared to the 2000s with increasing frequency. On the other hand, the risk and health burden of cold spells have increased over the decades. Our findings showed that the future mortality burden of heat waves and cold spells might not decrease, when considering their changes in risks and frequencies.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Average frequency of heat waves and cold spells increased in the 2010s in Korea and Japan. </LI> <LI> RRs of heat waves significantly decreased in total population. </LI> <LI> RRs of cold spells have significantly increased in all regions. </LI> <LI> Almost ARFs of heat waves and cold spells increased in the 2010s than 2000s. </LI> <LI> Health burden of heat waves and cold spells may not decrease in the near future. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Technology Initiatives Derailed in U.S Early Education Schools : Should Leadership Redesign the Organizational Blueprint?

2013 International Journal of Child Care and Education Vol.7 No.1

Where and when innovation occurs in the United States (U.S.) early education schools depends greatly on the congruency of long-standing workplace norms, access to resources, and the actual oversight of school leadership. Norms include many factors not the least of which is a work groups’ desire to improve. Resource access is controlled in large part by the government, both local and national. And finally, oversight of work methods and organizational communications is difficult for early education school leadership due to the high educator turnover rate, educator qualifications and traits, such as the emotional-intelligence of the work group, and the low rate of pay for the industry. Although government initiatives and individual school initiatives alike frequently focus on ‘quality service’, the workforce is simultaneously challenged with emotional intelligence factors. Leadership education of school leaders must collaborate a wide set of divergent perceptions of what constitutes quality service and which organizational communication will be enhanced by technology. The examination of data in a November 2012 survey focuses on what the educators perceive, what technology educators have access to, how educators are using technologies they have access to, and what educators view as connected among technologies and school quality.

Enhancing Butyrate Production, Ruminal Fermentation and Microbial Population through Supplementation with Clostridium saccharobutylicum

( Michelle A. Miguel ),( Sung Sill Lee ),( Lovelia L. Mamuad ),( Yeon Jae Choi ),( Chang Dae Jeong ),( Arang Son ),( Kwang Keun Cho ),( Eun Tae Kim ),( Sang Bum Kim ),( Sang Suk Lee ) 한국미생물·생명공학회 2019 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.29 No.7

Butyrate is known to play a significant role in energy metabolism and regulating genomic activities that influence rumen nutrition utilization and function. Thus, this study investigated the effects of an isolated butyrate-producing bacteria, Clostridium saccharobutylicum, in rumen butyrate production, fermentation parameters and microbial population in Holstein-Friesian cow. An isolated butyrate-producing bacterium from the ruminal fluid of a Holstein-Friesian cow was identified and characterized as Clostridium saccharobutylicum RNAL841125 using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. The bacterium was evaluated on its effects as supplement on in vitro rumen fermentation and microbial population. Supplementation with 106 CFU/ml Clostridium saccharobutylicum increased (p < 0.05) microbial crude protein, butyrate and total volatile fatty acids concentration but had no significant effect on NH3-N at 24 h incubation. Butyrate and total VFA concentrations were higher (p < 0.05) in supplementation with 106 CFU/ml Clostridium saccharobutylicum compared with control, with no differences observed for total gas production, NH3-N and propionate concentration. However, as the inclusion rate (CFU/ml) of C. saccharobutylicum was increased, reduction of rumen fermentation values was observed. Furthermore, butyrate-producing bacteria and Fibrobacter succinogenes population in the rumen increased in response with supplementation of C. saccharobutylicum, while no differences in the population in total bacteria, protozoa and fungi were observed among treatments. Overall, our study suggests that supplementation with 106 CFU/ml C. saccharobutylicum has the potential to improve ruminal fermentation through increased concentrations of butyrate and total volatile fatty acid, and enhanced population of butyrate-producing bacteria and cellulolytic bacteria F. succinogenes.

Research Note : The Role of Glucosides on the Thermal Stability of Color Produced by Anthocyanins from Red Cabbage

Vol.19 No.2

Carbohydrate derivatives of cyanidin, a class of anthocyanin pigments, are major component of red cabbage, which is responsible for the characteristic reddish color. The color of cyanidin derivatives is quite stable against heat, and here we aimed to identify the chemical component of glucoside-derivatives of cyanidin which is responsible for the thermal stability. By comparing the thermal stability of color from unmodified cyanidin and cyanidin-3,5 diglucoside with the color of cyanidin derivatives from red cabbage, we found that the glucoside modification confers the thermal stability. We believe that our finding will contribute to the preparation of heat-resistant anthocyanin pigments for food coloring and other applications.

Improving Accuracy and Reliability of Hearing Tests: An Exploration of International Standards

        Suh Michelle J.,Lee Jihyun,Cho Wan-Ho,Jin In-Ki,Kong Tae Hoon,Oh Soo Hee,Lee Hyo-Jeong,Choi Seong Jun,Cha Dongchul,Park Kyung-Ho,Seo Young Jun 대한청각학회 2023 Journal of Audiology & Otology Vol.27 No.4

his study explores the internal standards for hearing tests and benefits of implementing international standard protocols, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISTO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and discusses how ISO and IEC standards provide a framework for designing, calibrating, assessing hearing test instruments and methods, and exchanging and comparing data globally. ISO and IEC standards for hearing tests improve accuracy, reliability, and consistency of test results by applying standardized methods and environments. Moreover, they promote international harmonization and data interoperability, enabling information exchange and research collaboration. Those standards for hearing tests are beneficial but have challenges and limitations, such as variation in equipment and calibration, lag in updating standards, variation in implementation and compliance, and lack of coverage of clinical aspects, cultural diversity, and linguistic diversity. These affect the quality and interpretation of test results. Adapting ISO or IEC standards locally would improve their applicability and acceptability, while balancing customization and compatibility with global standards.

Vol.65 No.-

We are living in an era of scientific and technological revolutions today. Scientific discoveries of the 20th century have radically transformed our views about nature. The 21st century’s sciences and technologies (e.g. brain science, artificial intelligence, information and life-science technologies) have shown their increasing power that could potentially alter the very fabric of our society, and even suggesting that they can provide tools to reengineer even the basic parameters of the human body and the brain. But how do we ensure that technological advancements benefit all? Do we understand what will happen if the advancements of these innovative technologies are left unchecked? Our insights regarding these questions are rather limited. The primary objective of this study is to develop a world view, which can be used to develop ethical guidelines that anticipate the risks of such powerful technologies. To develop such a world view, a “life-giving world view”, we take an interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights from contemporary sciences, ethics, philosophy and theology, and drawing wisdom from ecological vision. We suggest that this “life-giving world view” is morally and theologically coherent, and reflect on its theological meaning in light of the core values of the Christian faith.

This study has an aim of analyzing Social Welfare Facility Safety Management Manuals published by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in Korea using a semantic network analysis in order to identify the attributes of and relationships among keywords in SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) manuals. Firstly, natural disasters and fire had highest centrality in the manuals. Secondly, the main performers described in the manual were found to be fire station, clients and workers of the welfare facilities. Thirdly, regarding their ascribed duties, prevention and preparedness were at the center of the whole network, which means that the manual focuses on preventing remedies. Overall, the manual is believed to take into consideration the traits of clients and be written from their perspectives. A few discussions are presented based on these findings.
