Formation Process of a Red Phosphor, $Y_2O_2S:Eu^{3+}$

Yttrium oxysulfide incoporated with europium has been prepared by direct heating the mixture of $Y_2O_3,\;Eu_2O_3,\;NaOH(or\;Na_2CO_3)$, and S. The reaction of the mixture at low temperatures and treatment at higher temperatures are studied. The formation of $Y_2O_2S$ is completed at lower temperature (ca. 500$^{\circ}C$) and incorporation of $Eu^{3+}$ into $Y_2O_2S$ lattice proceeds at higher temperature (above 1000$^{\circ}C$) along with crystal growth. Small amount of the unknown phase considered to be $Y_2O_2S_2$ is formed along with $Y_2O_2S$ in the temperature range from 400$^{\circ}C$ to 460$^{\circ}C$.
CdTe/GaAs Nanodot Arrays and Carbon Nanotubes Prepared Utilizing Nanoporous Alumina Templates

Nanoporous alumina templates were prepared by anodizing grain-free aluminum at constant voltage. The self-assembled hexagonally close-packed alumina cell result in ordered cylindrical nanohole arrays with interpore spacings ranging from 50 to 150 nm and pore sizes from 25 to 120 nm. Long-range-ordered CdTe nanodot arrays with controlled size and density were grown on GaAs substrates by using molecular-beam epitaxy with ultrathin nanoporous alumina masks; uniform dot sizes in the ranges of 35 nm (with a density of 2.5 10¹0 cm-²) and 80 nm (with a density of ~8.1 x 10 9 cm-²) were prepared as replicas of the alumina masks. The specic capacitances of the carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes for electrochemical double-layer capacitors were significantly enhanced, a maximum value of 175 F g-¹, by using the nanoporous alumina/aluminum templates with high pore density and uniform pore diameter.
Real Time Spectroelectrochemical Experiments with a Multichannel Detector

A spectroelectrochemical system assembled with a white light source, bifurcated optical fiber, Oriel Multispec spectrograph, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector is described. The system is shown to be capable of acquiring a whole spectrum in the spectral range of 290-800 nm in 25 ms or a longer period during electrochemical experiments at reflective working electrodes such as platinum or mercury. The utility of the system in studying electrochemical reactions during the potential scan, galvanostatic electrolysis, or after the potential step is demonstrated.
Hydrothermal Synthesis of H2V3O8 Nanobelts from V2O5 Xerogels for Lithium Battery Applications

Vanadium oxyhydroxide (H2V3O8) nanobelts were synthesized from V2O5 xerogels through a simple hydrothermal process in efforts to obtain nanomaterials for rechargeable Li batteries. Polymers with multidentate oxygen ligands, such as polyethylene glycol or polyethylene oxide, were shown to play a critical role in the formation of H2V3O8 nanobelts during the hydrothermal process. The specific capacity measured during the initial discharge process for the lithium battery with a cathode made of H2V3O8 nanobelts were 292 mAh/g, which stabilized at ca. 261 mAh/g corresponding to two equivalents of Li intercalation/deintercalation into H2V3O8. Lithium batteries made of a vanadium-oxyhydroxide cathode showed better cycle stability than those with a V2O5 cathode.

Indirect UV detection of aliphatic alcohols and carboxylic acids in reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography has been performed by use of multicomponent eluent containing UV chromophore such as aromatic alcohols, aldehydes, carboxylate ion, sulfonate ion or alhylammonium as detection agent. Chromatograms featuring induced sample peak and system peak are obtained. The system peak results from the relaxation process after the perturbation by sample injection.

Indirect detection method for chromatography probes the physical property of the eluent rather than that of analyte itself. Indirect fluorescence detection method for ion chromatography is presented. Salicylate ion is used as a fluorescing eluent. Doublebeam fluorescence detection arrangement shows the N/S ratio of 2x10??. The analyte peak is detected as a negative signal. A concentration detectability of 7.5x10?? N of chloride ion is obtained.

The authors present 4 cases of spondylolisthesis, 1 case of spondylolysis and 2 cases of Tbc spondylitis of lower lumbar spine treated by posterior lumbar interbody fusion, with follow-up periods of 3 months to 2 years. All cases had severe low back pain. Other common manifestations were radiating pain to leg. All cases were treated with laminectomy, which included a mesial facetectomy followed by posterior lumbar interbody fusion. The spondylolisthesis was reduced to zero degress in three cases by the use of vertebral spreader. The fusion rate of intervertebral space in radiological finding was 100 %. One case become pain free, 4 cases had mild degree of pain, I case had moderate degree of pain and I case was not improved. The authors conclude that posterior lumbar interbody fusion is applicable as a surgical treatment of patient with spondylolisthesis and Tbc spondylitis.

Two cases of the traumatic aneurysms of the pericallosal artery that occurred after closed head injury are reported. The mental deterioration, urinary incontinence and crural-predominent hemiparesis are attributable to the delayed intracranial hemorrhage after rupture of the traumatic aneurysm of the pericallosal artery. As soon as the diagnosis has been confirmed by the cerebral angiography, surgical treatment is recommended to reduce the high mortality and morbidity and the procedure as in the congenital aneurysm.
Flow Injective Determination of Thiourea by Amperometry

The amperometric responses of thiourea were studied in 0.1 M NaOH by flow injection analysis. D. C. amperometric and pulsed amperometric detection methods were applied for the determination of thiourea at novel metal electrodes such as Pt and Au. Triple-step potential waveforms were adopted in the pulsed amperometric detection. With an optimized pulsed waveform, the current for the oxidation of thiourea was examined with the variation of flow rate of carrier solution and with the change in the amount of sample injected. Gold working electrode turned out to be better in sensitivity and signal to noise ratio than Pt electrode in the pulsed amperometric detection of thiourea. Detection limit is estimated to be 5.33 ${\times}$ 10$^{-5}$ M with this detection method.
Luminescence and VUV Excitation Characteristics of Eu3+ or Tb3+ Activated Ca4YO(BO3)3

The luminescence and the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) excitation properties of Ca4YO(BO3)3 doped with Eu3+ or Tb3+ ions are investigated. In Ca4YO(BO3)3:Eu3+, the excitation band appears strongly at 250 nm with ca. a 100 nm bandwidth, and the resultant emission has a red peak at ca. 611 nm. The Tb3+ ion in Ca4YO(BO3)3 also emits efficiently in the green at 547 nm with the UV excitation of the allowed 4f ! 5d transition centered at 230 nm with ca.a 50 nm bandwidth. The mercury discharge plasma line at 254 nm can be efficiently absorbed by both Ca4YO(BO3)3:Eu3+ and Ca4YO(BO3)3:Tb3+, which makes them excellent phosphors for lighting applications.
