The explosive compaction fabrication process of cylindrical uni-directional porous copper, consisting of an outer pipecompletely fi lled with smaller inner pipes, was investigated by experimental and computational simulations to analyzeand optimize the fabrication process conditions. The computational simulations were carried out using a two-dimensionalmodel, mimicking the transverse cross-section of fabricated specimens. The computational simulation results revealed thatthe velocity of the outer pipe, which cannot be experimentally measured, was insuffi cient for explosive welding and that thewalls of the inner pipes had the potential to fail depending on their initial positioning and thickness.
Corrosion Behavior of Ti-Ag Alloys Used in Dentistry in Lactic Acid Solution

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the corrosion resistance of experimental Ti-Ag alloys used as dental materials. An elution test and a rest-potential measurement of alloys with 5–30 mass.% Ag were performed in a 1 % lactic acid solution. The amount of Ti ions released from the α phase of the Ti-Ag alloys decreased as the Ag concentration increased. TiAg present in the alloys dissolved preferentially, but Ti2Ag did not. The rest potentials of the Ti-Ag alloys were significantly higher than that of pure titanium. The elution test and the rest-potential measurement revealed that the Ti-Ag alloys, which formed a single α-titanium structure or contained a titanium and Ti2Ag, had excellent corrosion resistance that was comparable or superior to that of pure titanium.
Winter bird communities in the heterogeneous farmlands of the Aso region in Japan

Surveys of overwintering birds were conducted in a heterogeneous landscape, composed of paddy land, grassland, and mosaic agricultural land types, in the Aso region of Japan. Overall species richness and mean abundance were higher in paddy land types compared with the other two land types. Birds showed species-specific habitat preferences, with 26 species (56.5%) only being found on one of the three farmland types. Using canonical correspondence analysis, wider-ranging species were separated to species preferring forest and shrub vegetation sites compared with paddy field–dominated sites along the first axis. The environmental factors that explained individual abundance by generalized linear mixed models also differed among species and were dependent on the degree of paddy field, grass, shrub, and broad spatial forest cover. The most frequently detected bird species, Hypsipetes amaurotis, was positively correlated with the percentage of forests in paddy fields and grasslands at the local scale, where forests were rare. In conclusion, paddy lands that extend into valleys represent important habitat promoting high bird diversity during the wintering period, with the other two land types also supporting many species in this region at the landscape level.
Design of compensator for Engine Intake system model with Turbocharger by Extended Kalman Filter

In order to apply an engine intake air system model to engine control, it is necessary to calculate the intake air system model quickly and accurately under constraints of computational performance. Therefore, a study has been made on a method for calculating the intake air system model implemented by an analog LSI at short times. However, the problem is to include the model error in the intake air system model based on the analog LSI of present state. This paper reports a compensation of the intake air system model with error by Extended Kalman Filter (EKF).A basic model that reproduces model errors of analog LSI model is built, and a compensator based on EKF is designed. As a result, it is confirmed that the compensator reduces the model errors by half. Moreover, this paper reports the numeric solution in order to reduce the hunting phenomenon of the engine intake air system model.
