In seismic design of building frames, dampers are designed to absorb an earthquake's energy. Conventional steel tension braces havedisadvantages, such as pinching or deterioration of stiffness and strength under cyclic loading. A new type of elasto-plastic damper canpotentially avoid such disadvantages at a relatively low cost. Main characteristics of the damper are twofold: i) hardening effect causedby geometric nonlinearity, and ii) asymmetric hysteretic restoring force in tensile and compressive loading conditions. The objective ofthe study is to present a constitutive model and identify the corresponding parameters. The process of parameter identification of themodel is formulated as a non-smooth optimization problem and derivative-free optimization methods are suited for the problem. Throughnumerical examples, we investigate the seismic response reduction property of the damper. The results demonstrate the effectiveness ofthe optimization approach.

In this study, a direct detection system for triazine derivative herbicides was developed using the photosynthetic reaction center (RC) from the purple bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) apparatus. The histidine-tagged RCs were immobilized on an SPR gold chip using nickel-nitrilotriacetic acid groups as a binder for one of the triazine herbicide, atrazine. The SPR responses were proportional to the sample concentrations of atrazine in the range 0.1-1 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL. The sensitivity of the direct detection of atrazine using the RC-assembled sensor chip was higher than that using the antibody-immobilized chip. The other types of herbicides, DCMU or MCPP, were not detected with such high sensitivity. The results indicated the high binding selectivity of the RC complex.

TCP is generally used for data transmission on a geo-synchronous satellite link. It is known that the throughput increase corresponding to the increase of transmission speed can not be expected on a geo-synchronous satellite link since TCP was originally designed as a protocol for terrestrial cable networks. We established a computer simulation system and an experimental system using a Ka-band satellite to investigate the TCP performance on a high speed satellite communication link. This paper describes the throughput performances obtained by both systems using Window Scaling Option which is expected to improve the conventional TCP performances and shows the relationship between bit error rate and throughput.

<P>Tall birch trees allocate extra resource due to aboveground temperature elevation to bud and male flower production rather than to plant growth. Saplings increased only plant growth under warming. Size-dependent response should be considered. We experimentally heated canopy organs of tall birch trees (Betula ermanii Cham.; 18-20 m high) growing at a high latitude to determine how leaf phenology, plant growth, and bud and male flower production might shift in response to increases in aboveground temperature during global climate change. We warmed the canopies with infrared heat lamps fixed to steel pipe scaffolds built around the trees. The temperature of the warmed canopies increased by approximately 1 A degrees C. Warming extended the length of the growing season of canopy leaves (by accelerating leaf flush and delaying leaf fall), and significantly increased the numbers of buds and male flowers per shoot. Bud production and shoot length were positively correlated in both warmed and control branches. However, warming did not increase canopy shoot lengths. The intercept value of the positive regression slope between bud production and shoot length for warmed branches was higher than that for control branches. Thus, canopy warming had a direct positive effect on the bud production but had no indirect effect via increases in shoot length. Our experiment showed that tall birch trees allocated extra resources made available by increased aboveground temperature to bud and male flower production rather than to plant growth.</P>
Development of a Plasma Control System for Steady-state Operation on QUEST

A drift error correction technique with machine vision and a real-time equilibrium calculation codehave been developed on the QUEST (Q-shu university experiment with the steady-state sphericaltokamak) for steady-state operation. The drift error caused by the long time-integration of magneticraw signals has to be removed. With a captured image of the plasma’s cross section, the plasma’sposition is identified by use of image filters. The measured magnetic flux values are corrected to thecalculated flux values estimated by using this plasma position. The correction with the capturedimage work as expected in the preliminary result using a flashlight instead of a plasma.
