The acquisition of metastasis potential is a critical point for malignant tumors. Melanoma differentiation associated gene-7/interleukin-24 (mda-7/IL-24) is a potential tumor suppress gene and frequently down-regulated in malignant tumors. It has been implicated that overexpression of MDA-7 led to proliferation inhibition in many types of human tumor. Invasion is an important process which is potential to promote tumor metastasis. However, the role and potential molecular mechanism of mda-7/IL-24 to inhibit the invasion of human melanoma cancer is not fully clear. In this report, we identified a solid role for mda-7/IL-24 in invasion inhibition of human melanoma cancer LiBr cells, including decreasing of adhesion and invasion in vitro, blocking cell cycle, down-regulating the expression of ICAM-1, MMP-2/9, CDK1, the phosphorylation of ERK and Akt, NF-κB and AP-1 transcription activity. Meanwhile, there was an increased expression of PTEN in mda-7/IL-24 over-expression LiBr cells. Our results demonstrated that mda-7/IL-24 is a potential invasion suppress gene, which inhibits the invasion of LiBr cells by the down-regulation of ICAM-1, MMP-2/9, PTEN, and CDK1 expression. The molecular pathways involved were the MAPK/ERK, PI3K-Akt, NF-κB, and AP-1. These findings suggest that mda-7/IL-24 may be used as a possible therapeutic strategy for human melanoma cancer.
Bio-inspired Fabrication of Cu-Ni Coatings onto Mercerized Flax Fabric by Electroless Plating

This research mainly prepared a bio-friendly electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding fabric, and discussed the influence of the grammage (i.e. 120 g/m2, 160 g/m2 and 210 g/m2, etc) of fabric substrate on the preparation of metalbased EMI shielding conductive fabric by electroless plating. A series of steps involved mercerization, dopamine (DoPA) modification, Ni0 seeding and electroless copper-nickel (Cu-Ni) plating were carried out to fabricate ideal EMI shielding fabric. The prepared Cu-Ni fabric endowed relatively high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) (34.80-42.00 dB) ranging from 30 to 4500 MHz, which made it a huge potential in the field of wearable EMI shielding. Moreover, another discovery was that a relative higher grammage may lead to a lower total metal loading. Furthermore, Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were conducted to verify the introduction of functional groups in mercerization, modification and activation procedures. The crystalline phases and morphologies of resulting Cu-Ni coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) measurements. The atomic ratio (at.%) of Cu and Ni in the sample was determined by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) measurements. Overall, the Cu-Ni alloy fabric prepared in this research met the requirements of health, coating lining and EMI shielding.

Objective: To explore the application of multiplex nested methylated specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the early diagnosis of epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC). Materials and Methods: Serum and fresh tissue samples were collected from 114 EOC patients. RUNX3, TFPI2 and OPCML served as target genes. Methylation levels of tissues were assessed by multiplex nested methylated specific PCR, the results being compared with those for carcinoma antigen 125 (CA125). Results: The serum free deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) methylation spectrum of EOC patients was completely contained in the DNA spectrum of cancer tissues, providing an accurate reflection of tumor DNA methylation conditions. Serum levels of CA125 and free DNA methylation in the EOC group were evidently higher than those in benign lesion and control groups (p<0.05). Patients with early EOC had markedly lower serum CA125 than those with advanced EOC (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference in free DNA methylation (p>0.05). The sensitivity, specificity and positive predicative value (PPV) of multiplex nested methylated specific PCR were significantly higher for detection of all patients and those with early EOC than those for CA125 (p<0.05). In the detection of patients with advanced EOC, the PPV of CA125 detection was obviously lower than that of multiplex nested methylated specific PCR (p>0.05), but there was no significant difference in sensitivity (p>0.05). Conclusions: Serum free DNA methylation can be used as a biological marker for EOC and multiplex nested methylated specific PCR should be considered for early diagnosis since it can accurately determine tumor methylation conditions.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Series of Mn<SUP>4+</SUP>-activated LiLa<SUB>2</SUB>NbO<SUB>6</SUB> red emitting phosphors were prepared by the solid state method. The structural and luminescence properties are investigated on the basis of X-ray diffraction (XRD), emission and excitation spectra, and luminescence decay curves. The LiLa<SUB>2</SUB>NbO<SUB>6</SUB>:Mn<SUP>4+</SUP> phosphors can be efficiently excited by near-UV to blue light and exhibit bright red emission at around 712 nm, which can be assigned to the <SUP>2</SUP>E<SUB>g</SUB>→<SUP>4</SUP>A<SUB>2g</SUB> transition of the 3 d<SUP>3</SUP> electrons in [MnO<SUB>6</SUB>] octahedra. Temperature dependent emission spectra and decay curves from 10 to 480 K are analyzed to understand the luminescence mechanism of Mn<SUP>4+</SUP> in LiLa<SUB>2</SUB>NbO<SUB>6</SUB> lattice. Notably, such a novel red emitting phosphor shows special anti-thermal quenching behavior.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We provide a comprehensive study of the luminescence mechanism of the Mn<SUP>4+</SUP> ion. </LI> <LI> Sharp emission lines belong to vibrational modes are observed at low temperature. </LI> <LI> The LiLa<SUB>2</SUB>NbO<SUB>6</SUB>:Mn<SUP>4+</SUP> phosphor shows special anti-thermal stability at low temperature. </LI> </UL> </P>
