Using metaphorical techniques in focus groups to uncover mothers’ feelings about family meals

Traditional nutrition education has not been shown to consistently produce behavior change. While it has been suggested that using emotion-based messages may be a better way to influence nutrition behavior change, this has not been well tested. Producing emotion-based messages is a multi-step process that begins with exploring subconscious barriers to behavior change rather than the more obvious and typically reported barriers. The purpose of this research was to uncover the emotional reasons, sometimes referred to as emotional pulse points, for mothers’ choosing or not choosing to have more family meals. This would then serve as the first step to developing emotion-based messages promoting the benefits of family meals. Five focus group interviews were conducted with 51 low-income Black (n=28) and white (n=23) mothers. Metaphorical techniques were used to determine underlying feelings toward family and family meals. Discussions were video-taped, transcribed, and manually analyzed using a content-driven, immersion/crystallization approach to qualitative data analysis. Four themes emerged around the definition of family: acceptance, sharing, chaos, and protective/loyal. Some mothers felt mealtime was merely obligatory, and described it as stressful. Some reported a preference for attending to their own needs instead of sitting down with their children, while others felt that mealtime should be used to interact with and educate children and felt guilty when they were not able to provide family meals. Three themes emerged around feelings towards having or not having family meals: unimportant, important, and guilty. When explored further, mothers indicated that using the feeling of guilt to encourage family meals might be effective. Data obtained are being used to develop innovative, emotion-based messages that will be tested for effectiveness in promoting family meals.

Evaluation of Defect Detection in Aluminium, CFRP and Epoxy Resin Plates Using Non-contact Air-Coupled Ultrasonic Waves

In the fi eld of aerospace materials and structures, water coupled ultrasonic testing was not desirable due to changes in properties and contamination reason. Therefore, in the present study non-contact air coupled ultrasonic transducers were proposed as an alternative examination for such applications. This present study describes our practical knowledge of using piezoelectric air-coupled transducers for visualization and defect identification of aluminium, CFRP and epoxy-resin specimens. Further, the effectiveness of the system is verified by experiments conducted in the inspection of artificial defects and 2D images was reconstructed through scanning of specific specimen surface. Results show that, all the created defects were identified successfully using C-scan technique. The measured defect values were compared with experimental defect values and shows good agreement. The 1 MHz piezoelectric transducer was the best for all the three specimens which is used in the present study because of the material structure being evaluated. The bulk wave piezoelectric transducer was identified as extensive pulse attenuation by the structure of the aluminium, CFRP and epoxy resin.

Like some other great works of philosophy, H. L. A. Hart’s book is known as much by rumor as by reading. For what circulates as his views―particularly, I am embarrassed to say, in law schools―is often quite different. Isn’t Hart the dreary positivist who holds that law is a matter of rules that rest on a happy social consensus? Doesn’t he think that law is objective, a matter of fact? Doesn’t Hart celebrate the rule of law and take its rise as an achievement, a mark of progress from "primitive" to modem society? Doesn’t Hart think that liberty and justice are possible only through the certainty that clear law provides? And isn’t his whole theoretical perspective straight jacketed by a disproved, or at least outmoded, distinction between fact and value? Isn’t Hart concerned more with semantics than politics? The short answer is ‘no’, Hart does not think any of those things. Hart’s book is clear enough to need no summary, but an exploration of some of its themes might help guard against misunderstandings like those. I’m going to examine his views about the law and social rules, coercion, and morality, and then briefly glance at some methodological points. I make no effort to remain neutral: Hart’s theory of Law is correct in part, mistaken in part, and, here and there, a bit obscure. But what follows is not an assessment. I highlight areas where people tend to go, or to be led, astray, and I make critical comments on a few points; but and appraisal is work for the reader.

Distribution and Features of the Six Classes of Peroxiredoxins

Peroxiredoxins are cysteine-dependent peroxide reductases that group into 6 different, structurally discernable classes. In 2011, our research team reported the application of a bioinformatic approach called active site profiling to extract active site-proximal sequence segments from the 29 distinct, structurally-characterized peroxiredoxins available at the time. These extracted sequences were then used to create unique profiles for the six groups which were subsequently used to search GenBank(nr), allowing identification of ~3500 peroxiredoxin sequences and their respective subgroups. Summarized in this minireview are the features and phylogenetic distributions of each of these peroxiredoxin subgroups; an example is also provided illustrating the use of the web accessible, searchable database known as PREX to identify subfamily-specific peroxiredoxin sequences for the organism Vitis vinifera (grape).

Building Cultural Competence and Changing Cultural Perceptions: Students from the UAE and USA Participate in a Cultural Exchange Project

Objectives:Cultural competence is a skill that is lauded and encouraged in today’s business communication programs and in industry. The problem becomes, how and when do instructors introduce students to meaningful intercultural exchanges that produce the skills and awareness students will need in the future. The instructors in this study wanted a low-cost, student-center program or assignment to introduce students to intercultural communication through actual practice. The project needed to help students become more culturally aware and culturally competent. Methods:The authors of this study paired their students for a virtual cross-cultural exchange for a period of 8 weeks. Students from the United States of America (USA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) spent several weeks corresponding via the text messaging application, WhatsApp, in order to learn more about the other’s culture and customs. Surveys intended to measure cultural awareness and cultural competence were taken by students prior to the start of the exchange and again at its conclusion. Results:The survey results show an increase in cultural awareness and cultural competence correlated to the cultural exchange project. Conclusions:Instructors can create low-cost, interactive opportunities for students to improve cultural awareness and competence through online conversations and cultural exchanges with students of various cultures in different locales and countries.
