Iridology, developed more than 100 years ago, is the diagnosis of medical conditions through noting irregularities of the pigmentation in the iris The purpose of this study is to compare interrelation between CVA, hypertension family history and cardio-renal connective tissue in Iris Constitution through iris constitution examination. The subjects consist of 114 patients who were examined in Iris Constitution at Chonju Oriental Medicine Hospital attached to Wonkwang Univ. from September. 1St. 2000 to August. 31th. 2002. 1. In the distribution of Iris Constitution, among of 79cases, There are neurogenic type 13cases, abdominal connective tissue weakness constitution 31 cases, cardio-renal connective tissue weakness constitution 6 cases, cholesterol 7 cases and others 22 case in control group. 2. There are familial history of CVA and hypertention 32 cases, no familial history of CVA and hypertention1 3 cases, in 35cases of experimental group. These results imply that there is meaningfulness of interrelation between cardio-renal connective tissue weakness constitution and. CVA, hypertention.
초기 성공적인 심폐소생술후 혈청 Interleukin-6 농도의 발현양상

Objective : To investgate patterns of serial serum interleukin-6(IL-6) concentrations after initial successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and to access differences in serum IL-6 concentrations in patients with Cerebral Performance Category(CPC, 1-2) and CPC(3-5) at the 5th day after cardiacpulmonary resuscitation(CPR). Methods : We studied prospectively 12 patients with spontaneous circulation after cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Venous blood samples were taken 2, 4, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after restoration of spontaneous circulation to measure serum IL-6 levels by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results : Serum IL-6 concentrations in the severe neurolgically disabled group(CPC, 3-5) were significantly increased at 2, 24 and 48 hours after restoration of spontaneous circulation compared with the less neurolgically disabled group. Also, serum IL-6 concentrations in the severe neurolgic disabled group showed dual peak at 4 and 24 hours. Conclusion : Our study demonstrates significant increase of serum IL-6 in patients with CPC(3-5) after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the significant correlation between early increase of serum IL-6 and poor neurologic outcome. It suggests that early increase of serum IL-6 can be used as a prognostic marker after successful cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Glycosphingolipids including gangliosides play important regulatory roles in cell prolifera-tion and differentiation. UDP-glucose:ceramide glucosyltransferase(Ugcg) catalyze the initial step in glycosphingolipids biosynthesis pathway. In this study, Ugcg expression was reduced to approximately 80% by short hairpin RNAs(shRNAs) to evaluate the roles of glycosphingolipids in proliferation and gangliosdies differentiation of PK15. HPTLC/immunofluorescence analyses of shRNA transfected PK15 revealed that treatment with Ugcg-shRNA decreased expression of major gangliosides, GM1 and GD1b. Furthermore, MTT and western blot/immunofluorescence analyses demonstreated that inhibition of the Ugcg expression in PK15 resulted in decrease of cell proliferation. In addition to we showed that inflammatory respon-ses in PK15 and gangliosides knock-down PK15 cells stimulated with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide(LPS). The gangliosides GM3, GM2, GD3, GD1a and GD1b were detected in normal PK15 cell. However almost gangliosides undetected in gangliosides knock-down PK15 cell. In addition we found that the expression levels of TNF-α, indu-cible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and we measured the production of NO. The expression of inflammatory proteins, TNF- α, iNOS and COX-2 the elevated concentration in gangliosides knock-down PK15 cell. These results suggest that gangliosides interact with components of the proinflammatory response pathway and might, therefore, be relevant for designing future therapeutic strategies intended to prolong xenograft survival.

<P>Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) monotherapy is a therapeutic option for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) variants resistant to lamivudine (LAM). We evaluated the antiviral efficacy and safety of TDF alone compared to those of TDF plus LAM or telbivudine (LdT) combination in patients harboring HBV variants with genotypic resistance to LAM. This multicenter retrospective study included consecutive patients who had LAM-resistant HBV variants and were treated with TDF alone (monotherapy group) or TDF combined with LAM or LdT (combination therapy group) for at least 6 months. Inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) for the entire cohort was applied to control for treatment selection bias. Overall, 153 patients (33 in the monotherapy group and 120 in the combination therapy group) were analyzed. The overall probability of achieving complete virologic suppression at month 12 was 91.6%: 88.6% in the monotherapy group and 92.6% in the combination therapy group. Combination therapy was not superior to monotherapy in viral suppression before and after IPTW (<I>P</I> = 0.562 and <I>P</I> = 0.194, respectively). Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) loss, biochemical response, and virologic breakthrough did not differ between treatment groups. The probabilities of complete virologic suppression were comparable between treatment groups in the subsets according to HBeAg status and HBV DNA levels at baseline. No patient experienced any significant renal dysfunction during the treatment period. In conclusion, TDF monotherapy has antiviral efficacy comparable to that of TDF plus LAM or LdT combination therapy, with a favorable safety profile in CHB patients with LAM-resistant HBV variants.</P>

<P> [Purpose] An understanding of pain is very important in the study of nanophysiotherapy. In this review, we summarize the mechanisms of endothelin-1 (ET-1)- and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-related pain, and suggest their applications in pain physiotherapy. [Method] This review focuses on the signal transduction of pain and its mechanisms. [Results] Our reviews show that mechanisms of ET-1- and MAPK-related pain exist. [Conclusions] In this review article, we carefully discuss the signal transduction in ET-1- and MAPK-related pain with reference to pain nanophysiotherapy from the perspective of nanoparticle-associated signal transduction.</P>
Clinical practice guidelines of Korean medicine for facial palsy: An evidence-based approach

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Introduction</B></P> <P>Facial palsy is a common disease, and Korean medicine (KM) is widely used to treat facial palsy in Korea. However, there are no Korean multidisciplinary guidelines for facial palsy; thus, guidelines that are adequate for domestic circumstances are required.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>To establish clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), professional group formation, plans for research progress and the situation regarding CPG development were analysed. Subsequently, data from the Korean and Western medical literature regarding the CPGs for facial palsy were collected and analysed. A draft of the Korean medicine CPGs for facial palsy was then developed. After review and amendment of the guidelines by a review committee, the Korean acupuncture and moxibustion medicine society reviewed and approved the guidelines.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>In total, 24 recommendations were developed for the KM treatment of facial palsy. Six of the recommendations were primarily related to manual acupuncture and treatment methods. The other recommendations were related to electroacupuncture, thread embedding and other acupuncture techniques.</P> <P><B>Conclusion</B></P> <P>The result of this project suggests a methodology to develop CPGs that is suitable for our environment of KM but that it lacks supporting evidence; in turn, this methodology will lead to the production of evidence and recommendations for patient care in actual KM clinical settings.</P>

<P>We fabricated the floating gate for silicon-on-insulator nonvolatile memory devices with In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nano-particles embedded in polyimide insulator. Self-assembled In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nano-particles were created by chemical reaction between the biphenyl dianhydride-p-phenylenediamine polymer precursor and indium films. The particles size and density of In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nano-particles were 7nm and 6×10<SUP>11</SUP>cm<SUP>-2</SUP>, respectively. The current-voltage and retention time of fabricated device were characterized by using semiconductor parameter analyzer. A significant threshold voltage shift of fabricated nano-floating gate memory devices obtained, because of the charging effects of In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nano-particles. And a memory window measured about 1V at initial status.</P>

<P>ZnO nanopowder was prepared by a novel “solution-combustion method (SCM)” and it was used as a semiconductor photocatalyst to evaluate its photoreduction properties. Aqueous Pb-EDTA and Cu-EDTA solutions of heavy metal ions (Pb and Cu) were used for the photocatalysis reaction under UV illumination. The result was then compared with other semiconductor photocatalyst powder such as TiO2 powder (P25; Degussa) and TiO2 powder prepared by homogeneous precipitation process at low temperature (HPPLT). In the removal of Pb++ ions, the ZnO nanopowder showed 2.6 fold higher removal rate than P25 TiO2 powder and 1.8 fold higher than HPPLT TiO2. Also the ZnO nanopowder showed the highest removal rate of the Cu++ ions from the solution among the different photocatalyst powders compared. The superior photoreduction ability of the ZnO nanopowder appears to be due to its excellent UV absorption characteristics. This was confirmed by the photoluminescence (PL) measurement.</P>
