The effects of Laminaria japonica fucoidan extract (LJFE) on the biochemical parameters of lipid-related function were investigated in liver and serum of CCl_(4)-treated rats. LJFE of 100 mg/kg concentration was intraperitoneally administered into rats at dose of 1.5 ml/kg for 14 days. On the day 15, 3.3 ml/kg of CCl_(4) dissolved in olive oil (1:1) was injected 12 hours before anesthetization. We examined the lipid-related functions and enzyme activitys by measuring the levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in serum. The results showed that CCl_(4) treatment increased the high values of TG, LDH and ALP decreased the low values of TC but LJFE pretreatment decreased the high values of TG, LDH and ALP to the low values, increased the TC. It was suggested that LJFE can be used as the potential candidate for the lipid-metabolism natural supplement.

Although the importance of good conservation of historic sites including ancient royal tombs is well aware, still not much attention has been paid for the facilities and systems to preserve those historic sites, which includes precious artifacts as wall paints and carved works, etc. Even the general understanding about the environment of the underground space of tombs is not satisfactory. In Korea, researchers have recently begun addressing the above issue and are making efforts to develop suitable HVAC(heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) systems for conservation of tombs. An experimental investigation was carried out to study the behavior of the HVAC system installed for a tomb. This tomb resembles in size and shape the original stone built tomb of Baek-je Dynasty, which dates back to 6th Century in southwest part of Korean peninsula. In this study, an HVAC system for a tomb(D×W×H=1.3m×3.0m×1.2m) was installed to maintain sui표 indoor conditions for conservation of tomb. The temperature and humidity inside the tomb were measured different of the setting. Finally, performance of the HVAC system is presented and discussed.

A fourteen-month-old intact female Poodle was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, College of Veterinary Medicine, Chungnam National University. The patient was presented with history of vomiting, inappetence, ataxia, insomnia, tachypnea and convulsion for 5 days. Biochemical examination revealed BUN (254.2 mg/dl), creatinine (9.22 mg/dl) and phosphate (14 mg/dl). Epithelial cells of urinary tract, neutrophils, macrophages, a large number of gram negative and smaller number of gram positive bacteria were presented on urine test. Ultrasonographic findings show hyperechogenic kidney and indistinguishableness of renal cortex and medulla. Based on the results of examination described above, this case was diagnosed as acute renal failure with interstitial nephritis by urinary tract infection (UTI). Treatments with fluids therapy, diuretics, and peritoneal dialysis during hospitalization showed good results with no clinical signs.

<P>Blue fluorescent materials based on silicone end-capped 2-diphenylaminofluorene derivatives are synthesized and characterized. These materials are doped into a 2-methyl-9,10-di-[2-naphthyl]anthracene host as blue dopant materials in the emitting layer of organic light-emitting diode devices bearing a structure of ITO/DNTPD (60 nm)/NPB (30 nm)/emitting layer (30 nm)/Alq<SUB>3</SUB> (20 nm)/LiF (1.0 nm)/Al (200 nm). All devices exhibit highly efficient blue electroluminescence with high external quantum efficiencies (3.47%–7.34% at 20 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>). The best luminous efficiency of 11.2 cd A<SUP>−1</SUP> and highest quantum efficiency of 7.34% at 20 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP> are obtained in a device with CIE coordinates (0.15, 0.25). A deep-blue OLED with CIE coordinates (0.15, 0.14) exhibits a luminous efficiency of 3.70 cd A<SUP>−1</SUP> and quantum efficiency of 3.47% at 20 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>.</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Highly efficient blue organic light-emitting diodes are developed using dopant materials based on a 2-diphenylaminofluoren-7-yl-vinylarene core with various silicon-substituted end-capping groups. <P>Multilayered organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated by using the new fluorine derivatives end-capped with arylaminofluorenylethylenes as dopant materials. The device structure was ITO/NPB/15% blue dopants doped in MADN/Bphen/Liq/Al. Among those, a device shows the maximum luminance of 40800 cd/m2 at 12 V, the luminous efficiency of 12.8 cd/A at 20 mA/cm2, power efficiency of 9.13 Im/W at 20 mA/cm2 and CIE(x,y) coordinates of (x = 0.188, y = 0.372) at 8 V.</P>

<P>A series of <I>tert</I>-butylated spirofluorene derivatives incorporating a diphenylaminoaryl-vinyl group was synthesized <I>via</I> the Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons olefination and a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. To examine the electroluminescent properties of these materials, multilayered OLEDs were fabricated into the following device structure: ITO/DNTPD/NPB/MADN:blue dopant materials <B>1–14</B>/Alq<SUB>3</SUB>/Liq/Al. All devices showed efficient blue emission. In particular, one device exhibited highly efficient sky blue emission with a maximum luminance of 25 100 cd m<SUP>−2</SUP> at 8.5 V, as well as luminous, power and external quantum efficiencies of 9.5 cd A<SUP>−1</SUP>, 5.1 lm W<SUP>−1</SUP> and 6.7% at 20 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>, respectively. The peak wavelength of electroluminescence was 458 and 484 nm with CIE<SUB><I>x</I>,<I>y</I></SUB> coordinates of (0.14, 0.21) at 8.0 V. In addition, a deep blue device with CIE<SUB><I>x</I>,<I>y</I></SUB> coordinates of (0.15, 0.15) at 8.0 V showed a luminous efficiency and external quantum efficiency of 3.8 cd A<SUP>−1</SUP> and 3.3% at 20 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>, respectively.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>A series of <I>tert</I>-butylated spirofluorene derivatives incorporating a diphenylaminoaryl-vinyl group was synthesized and their photophysical and electroluminescent properties examined. An obligately aerobic bacterium, strain KOPRI $20902^T$, was isolated from a marine sediment in Ny-${\AA}$lesund, Spitsbergen Islands, Norway. Cells were irregular rods and motile with polar monotrichous flagellum. The optimum growth temperature was $17-22^{\circ}C$. Cells grew best in pH 7.0-10.0 and 3-4% sea salts (corresponding to 2.3-3.1% NaCl). The novel strain required $Ca^{2+}$ or $Mg^{2+}$ in addition to NaCl for growth. Sequence analysis of 16S rRNA gene revealed that the Arctic isolate is distantly related with established species (<92.4% sequence similarity) and formed a monophyletic group with Cellvibrio, which formed a distinct phylogenetic lineage in the order Pseudomonadales. Predominant cellular fatty acids [$C_{16:1}\;{\omega}7c/15:0$ iso 2OH (45.3%), $C_{16:0}$ (18.4%), ECL 11.799 (11.2%), $C_{10:0}$ 3OH (10.4%)]; DNA G+C content (37.0 mol%); nitrate reduction to nitrogen; absence of aesculin hydrolysis, N-acetyl-${\beta}$-glucosaminidase and esterase; no assimilation of arabinose, galactose, glucose, lactose, maltose, and trehalose differentiated the strain from the genus Cellvibrio. Based on the phylogenetic and phenotypic characteristics, Dasania marina gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed in the order Pseudomonadales. Strain KOPRI $20902^T$ (=KCTC $12566^T$=JCM $13441^T$) is the type strain of Dasania marina.
