Room Temperature Preparation of Poly-Si Thin Films by IBE with Substrate Bias Method

Cho, Byung-Yoon,Yang, Sung- Chae,Han, Byoung-Sung,Lee, Jung-Hui,Yatsui Kiyoshi The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2005 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.6 No.2

Using intense pulsed ion beam evaporation technique, we have succeeded in the preparation of poly crystalline silicon thin films without impurities on silicon substrate. Good crystallinity and high deposition rate have been achieved without heating the substrate by using lEE. The crystallinity of poly-Si film has been improved with the high density of the ablation plasma. The intense diffraction peaks of poly-Si thin films could be obtained by using the substrate bias system. The crystallinity and the deposition rate of poly-Si thin films were increased by applying (-) bias voltage for the substrate.

      • Poster Session : PS-1550 ; COPD : FEV1 and FVC Are Independent Factors Affecting Peptic Ulceration in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

( Sung Bae Cho ),( Jongmin Lee ),( Hyeon Hui Kang ),( Hwa Sik Moon ),( Sang Haak Lee ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Recent researches suggest that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with an increased risk of peptic ulcer disease, but limited data exist on affecting factors in COPD patient with peptic ulcer disease on gastroduodenoscopy. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records on 237 COPD patients who performed gastroduodenoscopy in 2003-2013. Patients were divided into two groups accordingly: peptic ulcer (gastric and/or duodenal ulcer) group and non-ulcerative disease group. Statistical analyses were performed with the logistic regression model to obtain the factors affecting peptic ulceration in COPD patients, controlling confounding factors. Results: The prevalence of peptic ulcer disease was 99 of 237 COPD patients (41.7%) and a male sex had a positive association with peptic ulcer disease (odds ratio[OR], 2.270, 95% confidence interval[CI], 1.189 to 4.332). There was independent relationships between the presence of peptic ulcer disease and both liters of predicted forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1) (OR, 0.407, 95% CI, 0.229 to 0.724) and liters of functional vital capacity (FVC) (OR, 1.029, 95% CI, 1.011 to 1.048). Smoking status and corticosteroids, known risk factors of peptic ulcer disease in general population, did not showed expected affect on peptic ulceration. Conclusions: Our findings provide further evidence that COPD is associated with peptic ulcer disease and there is an increased risk for peptic ulcer associated with COPD severity.

Mitochondrial-Targeted Catalase Protects Against High-Fat Diet–Induced Muscle Insulin Resistance by Decreasing Intramuscular Lipid Accumulation

        Lee, Hui-Young,Lee, Jae Sung,Alves, Tiago,Ladiges, Warren,Rabinovitch, Peter S.,Jurczak, Michael J.,Choi, Cheol Soo,Shulman, Gerald I.,Samuel, Varman T. American Diabetes Association 2017 Diabetes Vol. No.

We explored the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the pathogenesis of muscle insulin resistance. We assessed insulin action in vivo with a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp in mice expressing a mitochondrial-targeted catalase (MCAT) that were fed regular chow (RC) or a high-fat diet (HFD) or underwent an acute infusion of a lipid emulsion. RC-fed MCAT mice were similar to littermate wild-type (WT) mice. However, HFD-fed MCAT mice were protected from diet-induced insulin resistance. In contrast, an acute lipid infusion caused muscle insulin resistance in both MCAT and WT mice. ROS production was decreased in both HFD-fed and lipid-infused MCAT mice and cannot explain the divergent response in insulin action. MCAT mice had subtly increased energy expenditure and muscle fat oxidation with decreased intramuscular diacylglycerol (DAG) accumulation, protein kinase C- (PKC) activation, and impaired insulin signaling with HFD. In contrast, the insulin resistance with the acute lipid infusion was associated with increased muscle DAG content in both WT and MCAT mice. These studies suggest that altering muscle mitochondrial ROS production does not directly alter the development of lipid-induced insulin resistance. However, the altered energy balance in HFD-fed MCAT mice protected them from DAG accumulation, PKC activation, and impaired muscle insulin signaling.

Occult Breast Cancers Manifesting as Axillary Lymph Node Metastasis in Men: A Two-Case Report

        Sung Mo Hur,Dong Hui Cho,Se-Kyung Lee,Min-Young Choi,Soo Youn Bae,Min Young Koo,김상민,남석진,이정언,Jung-Hyun Yang 한국유방암학회 2012 Journal of breast cancer Vol.15 No.3

Occult breast cancer is a type of breast cancer without any symptoms on the breasts or any abnormalities upon radiologic examination such as mammography. In males, there are few cases of breast cancer, the rate of diagnosis of occult breast cancer is very low, and little is known about this disease. We experienced two cases of occult breast cancers manifesting as axillary lymph node metastasis in men. They had a palpable lesion on axillary area several years ago and had not seen a doctor about it. As such there was no abnormality on evaluations for cancer except for axillary lymph node showing signs of carcinoma (primary or metastatic) on biopsy and estrogen receptor-positive and progesterone receptor-positive on immunohistochemistry. The patients were diagnosed with occult breast cancer, and treatments were performed. Herein, we report the rare cases of occult breast cancers in men.

      • Enhanced Scintigraphic Visualization of Thyroglossal Duct Remnant during Hypothyroidism after Total Thyroidectomy: Prevalence and Clinical Implication in Patients with Differentiated Thyroid Cancer

        Lee, Sang-Woo,Lee, Jaetae,Lee, Hui Joong,Seo, Ji-Hyoung,Kang, Seong-Min,Bae, Jin-Ho,Ahn, Byeong-Cheol Mary Ann Liebert 2007 Thyroid Vol.17 No.4

OBJECTIVE: The exact prevalence and clinical significance of ectopic thyroid or thyroglossal duct remnant (TGDR) in the general population have not yet been fully determined despite numerous case reports. This study was prepared to assess the prevalence of TGDR in asymptomatic subjects during hypothyroidism after a total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and to clarify the clinical implication. DESIGN: Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy (Tc-scan) of the head and neck before radioiodine ablation therapy and whole-body and pinhole I-131 scintigraphy (I-scan) after ablation therapy were reviewed for 131 consecutive DTC patients with hypothyroidism after a total thyroidectomy. MAIN OUTCOME: Forty-four among the 131 patients (33.6%) revealed an unexpected linear or focal radioactivity at the anterior midline of the neck, suggesting the presence of TGDR. The Tc-scan and pinhole I-scan were concordant in all cases of abnormal midline neck uptake, although the planar I-scan failed to delineate TGDR due to prominent photon scattering in most cases. Preoperative enhanced neck computed tomography scan was performed in 49 patients and showed no evidence of thyroid glandular tissue separated from thyroid gland in midline of the anterior neck except 1 case. The success rate after radioiodine ablation did not differ significantly between the positive and negative TGDR patients. CONCLUSIONS: TGDR can be frequently observed in scintigraphy of hypothyroid subjects after a thyroidectomy, even when clinically unexpected. Therefore, care should be taken not to confuse the tracer uptake by TGDR with metastatic foci in I- and Tc-scans of patients with hypothyroidism after a thyroidectomy for DTC.

Improved Dielectric Properties of BaTiO3-Added CaCu3Ti4O12 Polycrystalline Ceramics

        Hui Eun Kim,Soon-Mi Choi,Sung Yun Lee,Youn-Woo Hong,유상임 대한금속·재료학회 2013 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.9 No.3

The effects of the BaTiO3 (BTO) additive on the electrical properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) polycrystalline ceramics were systematically investigated. Various amounts of BTO powder up to 15 mol. % were added to CCTO powder. Each batch was ball-milled, pressed into pellets, and finally sintered at 1060°C for 12 h in air. Compared with pure CCTO sample (εr ~ 52,000 and tan δ ~ 0.38 at 100 kHz), BTO-added CCTO samples commonly showed significantly reduced dielectric losses although their dielectric constants were decreased approximately by one order of magnitude (for instance, εr ~ 4,075 and tan δ ~ 0.02 at 100 kHz for 5 mol. % BTO-added CCTO sample). In addition, the breakdown voltages of BTO-added CCTO samples were much higher than that of pure CCTO sample, and thus the leakage currents were greatly reduced at the applied voltage above ~ 10 V. A large reduction in the dielectric losses and leakage currents is attributed to the secondary phases segregated at the CCTO grain boundary which are composed of CaTiO3, Ba4Ti12O27,and unreacted BTO.

Social Network Characteristics and Body Mass Index in an Elderly Korean Population

Lee, Won Joon,Youm, Yoosik,Rhee, Yumie,Park, Yeong-Ran,Chu, Sang Hui,Kim, Hyeon Chang The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2013 Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Vol.46 No.6

Objectives: Research has shown that obesity appears to spread through social ties. However, the association between other characteristics of social networks and obesity is unclear. This study aimed to identify the association between social network characteristics and body mass index (BMI, $kg/m^2$) in an elderly Korean population. Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 657 Koreans (273 men, 384 women) aged 60 years or older who participated in the Korean Social Life, Health, and Aging Project. Network size is a count of the number of friends. Density of communication network is the number of connections in the social network reported as a fraction of the total links possible in the personal (ego-centric) network. Average frequency of communication (or meeting) measures how often network members communicate (or meet) each other. The association of each social network measure with BMI was investigated by multiple linear regression analysis. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, the men with lower density (<0.71) and higher network size (4-6) had the higher BMI (${\beta}$=1.089, p=0.037) compared to the men with higher density (>0.83) and lower size (1-2), but not in the women (p=0.393). The lowest tertile of communication frequency was associated with higher BMI in the women (${\beta}$=0.885, p=0.049), but not in the men (p=0.140). Conclusions: Our study suggests that social network structure (network size and density) and activation (communication frequency and meeting frequency) are associated with obesity among the elderly. There may also be gender differences in this association.

      • Measuring the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies for implementing the hydrogen economy: An integrated fuzzy AHP/DEA approach

        Lee, Seong Kon,Mogi, Gento,Li, Zhuolin,Hui, K.S.,Lee, Sang Kon,Hui, K.N.,Park, Sang Yong,Ha, Young Jin,Kim, Jong Wook Elsevier 2011 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HYDROGEN ENERGY - Vol.36 No.20

Abstract

To provide and improve national energy security and low-carbon green energy economy, as a government-supported research institute related to developing new and renewable energy technologies, including energy efficiency, Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) needs to establish a long-term strategic energy technology roadmap (ETRM) in the hydrogen economy sector for sustainable economic development. In this paper, we establish a strategic ETRM for hydrogen energy technologies in the hydrogen economy considering five criteria: economic impact (EI), commercial potential (CP), inner capacity (IC), technical spin-off (TS), and development cost (DC). As an extended research, we apply the integrated two-stage multi-criteria decision-making approach, including the hybrid fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) model, to assess the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies in order to scientifically implement the hydrogen economy. Fuzzy AHP reflects the vagueness of human thought with interval values, and allocates the relative importance and weights of four criteria: EI, CP, IC, and TS. The DEA approach measures the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies for the hydrogen economy with a ratio of outputs over inputs.

The result of measuring the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies focuses on 4 hydrogen technologies out of 13 hydrogen energy technologies. KIER has to focus on developing 4 strategic hydrogen energy technologies from economic view point in the first phase with limited resources. In addition, if energy policy makers consider as some candidates for strategic hydrogen technologies of the other 9 hydrogen energy technology, the performance and productivity of 9 hydrogen energy technologies should be increased and the input values of them have to be decreased.

With a scientific decision-making approach, we can assess the relative efficiency of hydrogen energy technologies efficiently and allocate limited research and development (R&D) resources effectively for well-focused R&D.

Highlights

► Hybrid fuzzy AHP/DEA model is appled for assessing 13 hydrogen technologies. ► Weights of 5 criteria are allocated by fuzzy AHP. ► 4 out of 13 hydrogen technologies are efficient by the DEA. ► We can focus on 4 hydrogen technologies with economic view points strategically.

A New Record of the Varunid Crab, Varuna yui (Decapoda: Varunidae), from Korea

Lee, Sang-Hui,Jeong, Jin-Hyeop,Kim, Ju-Yeon,Lee, Seok-Hyun The Korean Society of Systematic Zoology 2022 Animal Systematics, Evolution and Diversity Vol.38 No.1

The varunid crab, Varuna yui Hwang & Takeda, 1986, is known as widely distributed in the Southeast Asian region. Three specimens of varunid crabs were collected near the estuary of the river from Korea and identified as V. yui. Varuna yui could be distinguished from the other congeneric species, V. litterata (Fabricius, 1798), by having a more extended mesial lobe on the distal region of the male first gonopod. In this paper, morphological diagnosis and illustrations of the newly collected V. yui are provided. The specimens examined herein were deposited in the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea and Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources.
