Though several wood decay fungi have been reported in the world-wide, only about 600 wood decay fungi have been reported in Korea to date. Thus, the objective of this study was to secure resources for the wood decay fungi in Korea. We investigated wood decay fungi in Yeoninsan Provincial Park, Korea, and the collected specimens were identified based on ITS sequence analysis. Two species were unrecorded species in Korea: Postia hirsuta (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) and Hyphodontia reticulata (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota). Another species was previously reported without detailed description: Ceriporia alachuana (Polyporales, Basidiomycota). Here, we provided additional detailed microscopic features and phylogenetic analysis of these species.
Development of Fc-conjugated Nanodisc for Enhanced Virucidal Efficacy against Influenza A Viruses

Several studies have conducted on neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) against influenza A viruses causing loss of life and economic damage. However, these virustatic antibodies lacking virucidal activity showed limited antiviral potency. Here, we develop a nanodisc providing the immunoglobulins with virucidal efficacy by rupturing the viral envelope, resulting in enhancing the antiviral effects. Mechanistically, the nanodiscs carrying Fc-binding peptides bind to NAbs targeting stem region of hemagglutinin are co-endocytosed into host cells. The nanodisc-based nanotransformer (NT) perforate the viral membranes at low pH in the endosome. Administration of the NT, especially with pegylated nanotransformer, reduce morbidity and mortality compared with the NAbs in mouse models. Our results suggest a new class adjuvant of applicable to other neutralizing antibodies and convalescent plasma therapy that confer virucidal potency by antibody-dependent perforation. In conclusion, the membrane nanostructure gives another prospective for concepts of antibody conjugated molecules.

This experiment provides basic data for selecting the best variety of radicchio in Gangwon-do, highland. The experiment was conducted in an open field in Taebaek-si (at the high altitude of 800 m) in 2021. Varieties compared were ‘Leonardo’, ‘Raffaello’, ‘Rossini’, ‘Rubro’, ‘Vasari’, ‘Botticelli’, and ‘Canaletto’, which are all widely cultivated in Europe and the United States. The weight, spherical index, and predicted quantity were investigated. Most of the radicchios planted in spring bolted, which aligns with the chicory flower differentiation. Additionally, the high seasonal temperatures impacted the anthocyanin synthesis causing low spring crop quality. In spring, ‘Leonardo’ had the highest cultivation period with a rate of 93.3% and an average weight of 343 g. ‘Leonardo’ was also the best for the predicted yield per unit area of 1,170 kg/10 a. In autumn, ‘Leonardo’ had the highest product rate of 84.4%. However, ‘Canaletto’ was the heaviest at 376.6 g. There was not a statistically significant weight difference between ‘Canaletto’, ‘Leonarod’, ‘Raffaello’, or ‘Rossini’. The highest predicted yield per unit area was ‘Canaletto’ at 1,102 kg/10 a. Therefore, we select ‘Leonardo’ as the best variety, it consistently displayed the highest quantity and quality of radicchio for growing in both spring and autumn in high altitude regions.

The production of water-soluble pigments by fungal strains indigenous to South Korea was investigated to find those that are highly productive in submerged culture. Among 113 candidates, 34 strains that colored the inoculated potato dextrose agar medium were selected. They were cultured in potato dextrose broth and extracted with ethanol. The productivity, functionality (radical-scavenging activities), and color information (CIELAB values) of the pigment extracts were measured. Five species produced intense yellowish pigments, and two produced intense reddish pigments that ranked the highest in terms of absorbance units produced per day. The pigment extracts of Penicillium miczynskii, Sanghuangporus baumii, Trichoderma sp. 1, and Trichoderma afroharzianum exhibited high radical-scavenging activity. However, the S. baumii extract showed moderate toxicity in the acute toxicity test, which limits the industrial application of this pigment. In conclusion, P. miczynskii KUC1721, Trichoderma sp. 1 KUC1716, and T. afroharzianum KUC21213 were the best fungal candidates to be industrial producers of safe, functional water-soluble pigments.
