Vibrio cholerae is mainly known to cause gastrointestinal infection after seawater exposure or raw seafood intake. It is rarely reported to cause cellulitis or sepsis, but threre has been no known case after acupuncture. Herein, We report a 56-year-old cirrhotic patient of non-O1, non-O139 Vibrio cholerae septicemia caused by cellulitis of both lower extremities after acupuncture.
Bacterial Black Stem Rot on Angelica acutiloba Caused by Xanthomonas campestris

Soaked black rot symptom was observed on the stem of Angelica acutiloba from July to August 2000 at Kumsan, Chungnam in Korea. This disease usually occurred under humid and high temperature conditions. The lesions on the stem appeared as soft rot with brown elliptical spots, which developed into large black spots at a later stage. When the bacterial isolates from the diseased plants were inoculated onto healthy plants by artificial needle prick method, symptoms similar to that observed in the fields developed. According to the cultural characteristics and pathogenicity of the isolates on the host plant the causal bacterium was identified as Xanthomonas campestris. This study proposed that the disease be named "bacterial black stem rot of A. acutiloba"loba".

This study was performed to investigate the current regulatory guidances of safety and efficacy evaluation for the approval of stereoisomeric drugs in Korea and US. According to the regulatory guidelines in major countries (EU, Canada, US), the important categories for the development of stereoisomeric drugs are classified as 1) development of a single enantiomer as a new active substances 2) development of a racemate as a new active substance 3) development of a new single enantiomer from an approved racemate. For this study, domestic regulatory documents for current guidelines of stereoisomeric drugs were investigated. Also four typical stereoisomeric drugs for three categories were chosen to investigate the new drug submission documents of KFDA and FDA for the safety and efficacy evaluation of stereoisomeric drugs. It is expected that these comparative results between KFDA and FDA will be useful for the safety and efficacy for the regulatory approval of stereoisomeric drugs in Korea.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>During the last decade, translational research on biodegradable metallic materials has shown the feasibility of these novel materials for use in the fields of cardiology and orthopedics. Implants prepared with biodegradable metals are significantly stronger than their polymer counterparts, and there is now convincing evidence demonstrating that these materials fully biodegrade <I>in vivo</I>, thus reducing the need for secondary surgery. Clinical trials of such novel materials show significant potential, with the prospect of a paradigm shift in the way musculoskeletal and cardiovascular conditions are treated. This work provides an overview of the rapidly advancing technology of biodegradable metals, as well as defining some challenges in the application of these new biodegradable materials in the medical field.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Male pattern alopecia (MPA) originates from many different factors and reasons and has progressed into various types. However, virtually no objective and accurate criteria for male pattern alopecia counseling has been developed. Therefore, in order to overcome the problems of subjective judgement and unstandardized guidelines, the alopecia index has been developed to scientifically assess alopecia phase and progress. Results and findings from the study include 69.4% of MPA had family history, 42.6% were in a highly stressed group, 52.1% slept 4 to 6 hours, 84.7% were influenced by androgen. Most male pattern alopecia patients had more than one disease, 60.9% had dandruff, 55.1% had inflammation, 69.0% were infected by demodex. The result of hair thickness and density could not verify within the range of sampling error, which might come from imprecise estimations of diagnosis software. So ten internal and external factors that have a relationship with male pattern alopecia has been identified: family history, stress, sleep, hormones, disease, dandruff, inflammation, demodex, hair density, and hair thickness. Therefore, the alopecia index can be utilized as a tool to diagnose and predict hair loss progress, and to evaluate the effectiveness of hair loss treatment. The alopecia index designed in this study is named “YKS alopecia index”.
