Bioinformatics services for analyzing massive genomic datasets

The explosive growth of next-generation sequencing data has resulted in ultra-large-scale datasets and ensuing computational problems. In Korea, the amount of genomic data has been increasing rapidly in the recent years. Leveraging these big data requires researchers to use large-scale computational resources and analysis pipelines. A promising solution for addressing this computational challenge is cloud computing, where CPUs, memory, storage, and programs are accessible in the form of virtual machines. Here, we present a cloud computing-based system, Bio-Express, that provides user-friendly, cost-effective analysis of massive genomic datasets. Bio-Express is loaded with predefined multi-omics data analysis pipelines, which are divided into genome, transcriptome, epigenome, and metagenome pipelines. Users can employ predefined pipelines or create a new pipeline for analyzing their own omics data. We also developed several web-based services for facilitating downstream analysis of genome data. C57BL/6N 마우스 탈모모델에서 미세다륜침(MTS)과 황련해독탕 약침액 도포가 모발성장에 미치는 영향

Objective : This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Hwangryeonhaedoktang pharmacopuncture solution (HRHDT) and microneedle therapy system (MTS) on hair growth in an alopecia model of C57BL/6N mice.Methods : Six-week old mice were depilated and separated in 4 groups ; CON (saline), MXD (3% Minoxidil), MTS and HRHDT+MTS. The treatments were applied twice a week for 17 days. The hair growth was determined photographically. The hair density, thickness and length were identified by Folliscope and the weights of body and organs were measured. In dorsal skin tissue, the expression of hair growth-related gene and protein was analyzed by RT-PCR. In addition, the hair follicles in the dermis were observed by H&E staining.Results : The promotion of hair growth was observed in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. The hair density, thickness and length were also improved in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. The mRNA expression of IGF-1, PRL and PL and the protein expression of VEGF and IGF-1 were increased in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. The hair follicles and hair root growth were improved in HRHDT+MTS and MTS compared to CON. In the above results, HRHDT+MTS were more effective than MTS.Conclusions : These results suggest that HRHDT and MTS have a hair growth activity and can be useful for the treatment of alopecia.

아토피 피부염에 운용 가능한 경혈(經穴) 탐구 - 상용(常用) 본초(本草)를 중심으로

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate acupoints for atopic dermatitis which have similar impact with frequent herbs. Methods : We collected research materials in "The Journal of Korean Medicine Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology & Dermatology" published from Feburary, 2000 to September, 2017. The search terms are 'atopic Dermatitis', 'antiallergic', 'anti-inflammatory', 'antianaphylaxis', 'dermatitis' and we elected experimental researches about herbal medicine. Among the herbal medicine, we extracted frequent herbs using more than 5 times, and categorized through "Herbal Medicine". By Consulting "Principles of Meridians & Acupoints; A Guidebook for College Students", we matched frequent herbs and acupoints. Results : 1. There are 38 frequent herbs for study except Glycyrrhiza uralensis FISCH. because it was used for balance in herbal medicine. Arrange meridians in order of frequency, the most is 'Lung meridian'. Among the organs, the most related one with skin is 'Lung' and 'Lung meridian' can treat skin diseases. 2. We researched acupoints called 'specific acupoints' under elbow, knee because of clinical usage. Exceptively, SP6 and GV20 are not included in 'specific acupoints' but they can be effective for atopic dermatitis treatment. 3. Researching on MEDLINE about frequent herbs and acupoints, there are many studies that acupuncture is effective for reducing pruritus. Therefore, the acupoints which were mentioned in this study can be choosed for atopic dermatitis. Conclusions : We found several applicable acupoints for Atopic Dermatitis. We hope it will be useful in experiment such as randomized controllized trial on Atopic Dermatitis and acupuncture and futhermore in clinic.

화폐상 습진에 병발한 급성 알레르기성 피부염 한방 치험 1례

Objective : The purpose of this report is to know the effect of oriental medical treatments on acute allergic contact dermatitis with multiple nummular eczema. Methods : We treated a 34-years-old woman patient with acute allergic contact dermatitis on face and multiple nummular eczema on both arm, right ankle and left inguinal region by Korean medicine. After Korean medical treatment for 42 days in hospital, we measured the decrease of exudation and pruritis as well as recovery of skin damages. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Results & Conclusion : The symptoms of ACD and nummular eczema were significantly improved except scars. Exudation and pruritis were disappeared and skin damages were almost recovered until discharge from hospital. After 20 days we could confirm the symptoms were clearly disappeared. Thus Korean medical treatments are effective on ACD and nummular eczema.
