This present study investigated the effects of the abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM) and chin tuck (CT) on middle thoracic erector spinae, lower thoracic erector spinae, and lumbar erector spinae muscle activity during three prone thoracic extension (PTE) exercises. Twelve healthy subjects performed preferred PTE, ADIM PTE, and ADIM-CT PTE. Surface electromyography was used to collect data on the muscle activity of dominant middle and lower thoracic erector spinae muscles and the lumbar erector spinae. Middle and lower thoracic erector spinae muscle activity significantly increased when ADIM and CT was performed (p<.05). However, lumbar erector spinae muscle activity significantly decreased in ADIM PTE compared to preferred PTE (p=.017) and significantly increased in ADIM-CT PTE compared to ADIM PTE (p=.004). In conclusion, ADIM-CT PTE effectively increased middle and lower thoracic erector spinae muscle activity, and ADIM PTE decreased lumbar erector spinae muscle activity. Hence, ADIM PTE could be a recommended exercise maneuver to strengthen thoracic erector spinae without over activation of lumbar erector spinae.

Objective

Electrocardiographic markers identifying malignant forms of early repolarisation (ER) from ER of normal variants are of prime clinical importance. J-wave amplitudes (2.0±1.3 vs 4.0±1.7, p=0.004) and the number of leads with ER (3.3±1.7 vs 5.3±2.0, p=0.021) were significantly higher around the time of VF. In particular, the characteristic morphology of ‘giant’ (wide, >80 ms) J-waves were observed during the perievent period in 5/12 patients with ERS. However, there were no significant differences in the electrocardiographic parameters of ER pattern remote from VF events between the patients with ERS and normal control subjects with ER.

Conclusions

Although the extent of and amplitude of J-wave or ST segment elevation (STE) increased significantly around VF episodes, the electrocardiographic parameters of ER remote from VF episodes were not significantly different from those of normal controls. The narrow time window of these ECG changes limits early detection of ER patients at risk of developing VF or sudden cardiac death.

The pollens of Compositae family are important weed pollens during weed pollen season from midAugust to the end of September in Korea. The mugwort, ragweed, dandelion, dahalia, aster, golden rod, chrysanthemum are all Compositae family, and the results of skin test with these Compositae extracts reveal relatively higher than other pollen extracts. Here we report 3 cases of pollinosis induced by Compositae family who were confirmed by the provocation tests with these pollen extracts. Two of these cases are seasonal rhinitis with allergic conjunctivitis and one of these cases is seasonal bronchial asthma.

TMV resistant lines (TRLs) originated from the Blo plant of Nicotiana tabacum cv. NC82 transformed with TMV coat protein cDNA which initially showed delayed disease symptom were selected for increased resistance in each subsequent generation. The result of field experiment of the transgenic tobacco lines in the fifth generation for TMV resistance and their response to other tobacco diseases (black shank, bacterial wilt, and powdery mildew) is described in this report. When fifteen TRLs of the fifth generation were tested for TMV resistance by mechanically inoculating the individual plants, over 95 percent of the plants of 6 lines showed complete resistance even 8 weeks after the inoculation. Average frequency of the resistant plants in TRLs of the fifth generation 8 weeks after the inoculation was 87%. Stable insertion and expression of TMV coat protein cDNA in the fifth generation of the transgenic tobacco plant were confirmed by PCR and immunoblot hybridization, respectively. All TRLs were resistant to the black shank but were susceptible to the bacterial wilt disease and the powdery mildew to the same degree as non-transgenic NC82 was. Therefore, it was indicated that the phenotypes related at least to disease resistance were not changed in the transgenic tobacco. Key words : TMV CP cDNA, TMV resistant tobacco plant, transformation.

A metallocene catalyst or a metallocene/Ziegler-Natta hybrid catalyst supported on MgCl₂ was studied for application to the commercial slurry phase process and to the control of MWD of the polymer produced. The MgCl₂ support was prepared by the recrytailization method with different solvents: alcohols and H₂O. The recrystallized MgCl₂ support was pretreated with triisobutylaluminum (TiBAL) or trimethylaluminum (TMA), methylaluminoxane (MAO), to give different supporting environments. Metallocene/Ziegler-Natta hybrid catalysts on MgCl₂ were prepared by first supporting the metallocene catalyst, followed by the Ziegler-Natta catalyst after pretreatment with an alkylaluminum compound. The type of solvent plays a role in providing a suitable environment in the support for impregnating catalysts. The hybrid catalyst, whose support was recrystallized in n-propanol (n-PrOH) and pretreated with TiBAL, showed the highest molar ratio of Zr/Ti=1/2.71. But the hybrid catalyst, whose support was recrystallized in H₂O and pretreated with MAO, showed the best hybrid effect showing a variety of bimodal peaks in proportion to the ratio of MAO/TEA in GPC analysis. This effect might be due to steric factor and polarity of solvent, as well as the pretreatment material. It is concluded that the MWD of polyethylene producod by metallocene/Ziegler-Natta hybrid catalyst that is supported on MgCl₂ can be controlled by regulating the amounts of MAO and TEA added as cocatalysts and by the use of different solvents and pretreatment materials.

Vegetation maps present an inventory of existing plant communities, their location, extent and geographical distribution in the area concerned. For green space management and environment assessment accurate vegetation maps can be used effectively for analyzing the relationships between vegetation and the physical environment. However, the Current Vegetation Map, Forest Stand Map, and Green Naturality Map in Korea do not represent the status of vegetation community exactly. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to produce a detailed vegetation map at urban neighborhood parks in Korea by collecting the exact current vegetation data from field survey, and remote sensing(RS) and storing these data in geographical information systems(GIS). Ultimately it is intended to be used in planning and managing the urban green space. The study area is 66.1ha and it is classified into total 19 communities together with parks, orchards, bare land, grassland, tombs and gardens, etc. There is 53.7ha(81.2%) difference between the detailed vegetation map and the current vegetation map. There is also 46.9ha(70.8%) difference between the detailed vegetation map and forest stand map. After this study, it was concluded that it needs producing the detailed vegetation map used in managing urban green spaces because the existing vegetation map does not represent the status of vegetation in the study site.
