Investigation of BAX and BCL2 expression and apoptosis in a resveratrol- and prednisolone-treated human T-ALL cell line, CCRF-CEM

        Taghi Khanzadeh,Majid Farshdousti Hagh,Mehdi Talebi,Bahman Yousefi,Ako Azimi,Abbas Ali Hossein pour feizi,Behzad Baradaran 대한혈액학회 2018 Blood Research Vol.53 No.1

BackgroundThe numerous side effects and chemo-resistance of conventional chemical drugs in thetreatment of malignancies have led to consideration of the anti-cancer properties of naturalproducts. In the present study, we aimed to explore the apoptotic effect of two naturalcomponents, resveratrol and prednisolone, on the T acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)cell line, CCRF-CEM. Our findings suggested the incorporation of these natural agentsinto drug regimens to treat patients with ALL. MethodsIn this study, we investigated the effect of different doses of resveratrol (15, 50 and 100μM) and prednisolone (700 μM) on BAX (apoptosis promoter) and BCL2 (apoptosis inhibitor)expressions following 24 and 48 hours of treatment on CCRF-CEM cells, usingreal-time PCR, and on apoptosis induction using flow cytometry. ResultsThe results showed a time- and dose-dependent increase in BAX expression and a decreasein BCL2 expression. Apoptosis was induced in CCRF-CEM cells treated with resveratroland prednisolone for 24 and 48 hours. Combined resveratrol and prednisolone treatmentshowed synergistic effects on the overexpression of BAX and the downregulationof BCL2. The drug combination had a greater influence on apoptosis induction comparedwith either drug administered alone after 48 hours of treatment. ConclusionThe results of this study suggested that resveratrol exhibited a remarkable efficacy to improvethe influence of glucocorticoids drugs, especially prednisolone, to induce apoptosisin the CCRF-CEM cell line.

Effect of Wet Curing Duration on Long-Term Performance of Concrete in Tidal Zone of Marine Environment

        Mehdi Khanzadeh-Moradllo,Mohammad H. Meshkini,Ehsan Eslamdoost,Seyedhamed Sadati,Mohammad Shekarchi 한국콘크리트학회 2015 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.9 No.4

A proper initial curing is a very simple and inexpensive alternative to improve concrete cover quality and accordingly extend the service life of reinforced concrete structures exposed to aggressive species. A current study investigates the effect of wet curing duration on chloride penetration in plain and blended cement concretes which subjected to tidal exposure condition in south of Iran for 5 years. The results show that wet curing extension preserves concrete against high rate of chloride penetration at early ages and decreases the difference between initial and long-term diffusion coefficients due to improvement of concrete cover quality. But, as the length of exposure period to marine environment increased the effects of initial wet curing became less pronounced. Furthermore, a relationship is developed between wet curing time and diffusion coefficient at early ages and the effect of curing length on time-to-corrosion initiation of concrete is addressed.

Self-Organizing and Error Driven (SOED) artificial neural network for smarter classifications

        Ruholla Jafari-Marandi,Mojtaba Khanzadeh,Brian K. Smith,Linkan Bian 한국CDE학회 2017 Journal of computational design and engineering Vol.4 No.4

Classification tasks are an integral part of science, industry, business, and health care systems; being such a pervasive technique, its smallest improvement is valuable. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is one of the strongest techniques used in many disciplines for classification. The ANN technique suffers from drawbacks such as intransparency in spite of its high prediction power. In this paper, motivated by learning styles in human brains, ANN’s shortcomings are assuaged and its prediction power is improved. Self-Organizing Map (SOM), an ANN variation which has strong unsupervised power, and Feedforward ANN, traditionally used for classification tasks, are hybridized to solidify their benefits and help remove their limitations. The proposed method, which we name Self-Organizing Error-Driven (SOED) Artificial Neural Network, shows significant improvements in comparison with usual ANNs. We show SOED is a more accurate, more reliable, and more transparent technique through experimentation with five different datasets.

This research is to investigate the effect of borosilicate glass powder on neutron shielding capability of cement mortar. The average particle size of the borosilicate glass powder was 13 μm. It was found that the addition of borosilicate glass powder increased 28 day compressive strength. In addition, neutron shielding capability of cement mortar also increased by the addition of borosilicate glass powder. Considering our earlier findings on enhanced thermal neutron shielding of cement mortar by borosilicate glass powder, the use of borosilicate glass powder was found to be effective to shield neutron when the cement mortar was exposed to the neutron radiation. It can be concluded that borosilicate glass powder is a good alternative material for neutron shielding purposes.

Bisphosphonates and Prevention of the Perimenopausal Breast Cancer Recurrence: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Zohreh Sanaat,Ozra Nouri,Monireh Khanzadeh,Hadi Mostafaei,Nafiseh Vahed,Neda Kabiri,Reza Ali Akbari Khoei,Hanieh Salehi-Pourmehr 한국유방암학회 2022 Journal of breast cancer Vol.25 No.6

Purpose: Bisphosphonates (BPs) have a powerful effect on reducing bone resorption and improving the survival of patients with breast cancer. We aimed to investigate the impact of BP treatment on the prevention of recurrence, metastasis, and death of breast cancer survivors in the perimenopausal period. Methods: The search strategy aimed to identify both published and unpublished studies in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, ProQuest, and Google Scholar in March 2021. Two independent reviewers assessed quantitative papers selected for retrieval for methodological validity before being included in the review using standardized critical appraisal instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Meta-Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-MAStARI). Statistical meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4 statistical software when the data were homogenous. Meta-analysis was performed by calculating the effect size (hazard ratio; HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Twenty-one studies were eligible for this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall The HRs for disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in women who received BPs were 0.89 (95% CI, 0.83–0.97; p = 0.005), and 0.75 (95% CI, 0.63–0.89; p = 0.001), respectively. The results showed that BPs had a significant effect on the prevention of locoregional (HR, 0.64; 95% CI, 0.42–0.97; p = 0.04), bone (95% CI, 0.74–0.95; p ≤ 0.001), and distant metastases (HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.62–0.94; p = 0.01). In the subgroup analysis based on study design, the only insignificant HR in the included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was that of locoregional metastasis. Conclusion: Although BPs have a promising effect on DFS, OS, and bone metastasis of perimenopausal women survivors of breast cancer, more RCTs are needed to evaluate their effect on other survivors’ outcomes.

Comparison of Functional Outcomes following Surgical Decompression and Posterolateral Instrumented Fusion in Single Level Low Grade Lumbar Degenerative versus Isthmic Spondylolisthesis

Farzad Omidi-Kashani,Ebrahim Ghayem Hasankhani,Mohammad Dawood Rahimi,Reza Khanzadeh 대한정형외과학회 2014 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.6 No.2

Background: The two most common types of surgically treated lumbar spondylolisthesis in adults include the degenerative and isthmic types. The aim of this study was to compare the functional outcomes of surgical decompression and posterolateral instrumented fusion in patients with lumbar degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis. Methods: In this retrospective study, we reviewed the clinical outcomes in surgically treated patients with single level, low grade lumbar degenerative, and isthmic spondylolisthesis (groups A and B, respectively) from August 2007 to April 2011. We tried to compare paired settings with similar initial conditions. Group A included 52 patients with a mean age of 49.2 ± 6.1 years, and group B included 52 patients with a mean age of 47.3 ± 7.4 years. Minimum follow-up was 24 months. The surgical procedure comprised neural decompression and posterolateral instrumented fusion. Pain and disability were assessed by a visual analog scale (VAS) and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), respectively. The Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney U-tests were used to compare indices. Results: The most common sites for degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis were at the L4–L5 (88.5%) and L5–S1 (84.6%) levels, respectively. Surgery in both groups significantly improved VAS and ODI scores. The efficacy of surgery based on subjective satisfaction rate and pain and disability improvement was similar in the degenerative and isthmic groups. Notable complications were also comparable in both groups. Conclusions: Neural decompression and posterolateral instrumented fusion significantly improved pain and disability in patients with degenerative and isthmic spondylolisthesis. The efficacy of surgery for overall subjective satisfaction rate and pain and disability improvement was similar in both groups.

A simple one Step Thermochemical Approach for Synthesis of ZnS:Mn Nanocrystals (NCs)

        Mehdi Molaei,Ahmad Lotfiani,Fatemeh Karimi maskon,Masoud Karimipour,Mohammd Khanzadeh 대한전자공학회 2014 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.14 No.1

In this work we have synthesized ZnS:Mn nanocrystals (NCs) using a simple one step thermochemical method. Zn(NO3)2 and Na2S2O3 were used as the precursors and Mn(NO3)2 was the source of impurity. Thioglycolic acid (TGA) was used as the capping agent and the catalyst of the reaction. The structure and optical property of the NCs were characterized by means of X- ray diffraction (XRD), HRTEM, UV-visible optical spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses demonstrated cubic phase ZnS:Mn NCs with an average size around 3 nm. Synthesized NCs exhibited band gap of about 4 eV. Photoluminescence spectra showed a yellow-orange emission with a peak located at 585 nm, demonstrating the Mn incorporation inside the ZnS particles.
