<P>Neurogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster is initiated by an ordered appearance of neuroblasts arranged in three columns (medial, intermediate, and lateral) in the neuroectoderm. In each column, specific homeodomain-containing genes are expressed. The ventral nervous system defective (vnd) regulates the fate of the cells in the medial domain of the neuroectoderm. In the present study, we identified Vnd-regulated genes through computational screening. Through further screening, we selected eight genes that were downregulated in the vnd loss-of function mutation. These included zfh1, uzip, CG7687, SytIV, stau, ase, scrt, and dpn genes. Ectopic expression of vnd, using the GAL4/UAS system, caused abnormal expression of all eight genes. Further, eight genes were coexpressed with that of vnd. Reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) experiments showed an enhanced expression of uzip, CG7687, SytIV, and ase. Although the other four genes did not show an enhanced expression through RT-PCR, cytochemical and genetic evidence showed that these genes were regulated by Vnd. Taken together, the results obtained from this study indicate that expression of at least four genes, uzip, CG7687, SytIV, and ase, are regulated by Vnd.</P>

Background The indications, benefits, and outcomes of percutaneous transluminal renal artery intervention (PTRI) remain controversial. The study purpose was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of PTRI in clinical practice. Methods A retrospective review of 217 subjects (254 renal arteries; mean age, 59.8 years) who underwent PTRI based on medical database. Results The most common cause of renal artery stenosis was atherosclerosis in 217 (85.4%), followed by Takayasu arteritis (TA) in 23 (9.1%), fibromuscular dysplasia in five (2.0%) and others in nine (3.5%). Mean follow-up duration was 5.7±3.7 years. The first restenosis rate was 7.5% (n=19; highest in TA: n=9, 47.4%) and second restenosis occurred in six arteries (five TAs, one fibromuscular dysplasia). Follow-up blood pressure improved from 142.0/83.5 to 122.8/73.5 mmHg (P<0.001). There was no change within 5 years’ follow-up in estimated glomerular filtration rate (P=0.44), whereas TA changed from 69.8±20.5 to 84.2±17.9 mL/min/1.73 m² (P=0.008). Progressive renal dysfunction was related to diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and peripheral artery obstructive disease on multivariate analysis with hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 2.24 (1.21–4.17), 2.54 (1.33–4.84), and 3.93 (1.97–7.82), respectively. Conclusions PTRI was associated with a blood pressure reduction. Despite a higher rate of restenosis, patients with TA showed significant improvement in estimated glomerular filtration rate. Diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and peripheral artery obstructive disease were related with progressive renal dysfunction after PTRI.
Long-Term Clinical Outcomes and Optimal Stent Strategy in Left Main Coronary Bifurcation Stenting

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Objectives</B></P> <P>This study sought to investigate the long-term clinical effects of stent generation and stent strategy for left main coronary artery (LMCA) bifurcation lesion treatment.</P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Limited data are available to assess long-term clinical outcomes after stenting, including use of current-generation drug-eluting stent (C-DES) for treatment of LMCA bifurcation lesions.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>A total of 1,353 patients who were recorded in 2 multicenter real-world registries were treated by either early-generation drug-eluting stent (E-DES) (n = 889) or C-DES (n = 464). Primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). MACE was defined as a composite of cardiac death or myocardial infarction, stent thrombosis, and target lesion revascularization rates during 3-year follow-up. The authors further performed propensity-score adjustment for clinical outcomes.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>During 3-year follow-up, the overall MACE rate was 8.7%. Use of a 1-stent strategy resulted in better clinical outcomes than use of a 2-stent strategy (4.7% vs. 18.6%, hazard ratio [HR]: 3.71; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.55 to 5.39; p < 0.001). Use of C-DES resulted in a lower MACE rate compared with using E-DES (4.6% vs. 10.9%, HR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.34 to 0.89; p = 0.014), especially for the 2-stent strategy. For patients with C-DES, the presence of chronic kidney disease and pre-intervention side branch diameter stenosis ≥50% were significant independent predictors of MACE.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>Intervention of LMCA bifurcation lesions using DES implantation demonstrated acceptable long-term clinical outcomes, especially in C-DES patients. Use of a 1-stent strategy resulted in better clinical benefits than using a 2-stent strategy.</P>

해양연구소는 한국 해양학사상 처음으로 1983년 12월 북태평양의 클라리온-클리퍼톤균열대 (Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones) 사이에서 망간단괴와 망간각을 채취하였으며, 이때 사용된 해양조사선은 하와이대학의 KANA KEOKI호였다. 본 연구는 KONOD-1 지역에서 채취된 망간단괴와 망간각의 광물조성과 유용금속성분을 분석, 경호하였으며, 태평양 심해저 평원에서 보고된 망간만괴와 비교하였다. 한편 광물 및 금속함량을 기초하여 금속원소의 공급원과 망간단괴가 형성되는 원리를 해석하였다. 연구지역 망간단괴는 망간산화물로 토도로카이트(todorokite)와 ${\delta}$-$MnO_2$로 그리고 망간각은 ${\delta}$-$MnO_2$로 조성되어 있다. 주요 금속성분의 평균함량은 Mn 21.4%, Fe 6.2%, Ni 0.9%, Cu 0.7%, 그리고 Co 0.2% 이며, 이 값은 클라리온과 클리퍼톤 균열대 지역에서 규질연니를 표층퇴적물로 하고 있는 심해저평원 망간만괴에서 보고된 값보다 적다. 그러나 망간단괴중 높은 Mn/Fe비 (평균 3.9, 최고 5.9)와 높은 Cu/Ni비 (평균 0.8, 최고 1.0)는 북태평양에서 속성작용으로 형성된 망간단괴와 일치한다. KONOD-1 지역 망간단괴의 화학적 특징은 두 종류로 대분되며, 각각의 특성은 망간단괴가 형성된 퇴적환경을 암시한다. 강한 속성작용의 망간단괴는 심해저평원지역 규질연니의 현생 퇴적층위에서 형성되고 있으며 약한 속성작용의 망간단괴는 심해저 구릉이 분포하는 지형, 즉 퇴적층이 균일하지 못한 환경에 주로 분포되어 있다.

Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) has started the nation's first biogas-microturbine project in the city of Gongju as an effort to encourage the utilization of wasted biogas containing useful energy source in the form of CH₄. The goal of the project is to set up the biogas microturbine co-generation system for utilizing biogas as an energy source and improving the economics of the wastewater treatment plant. Wastewater treatment processes were investigated in depth to find improvement possibility. Changes in internal recirculation ratio and pre-treatment degree are needed to optimize plant operation and biogas production. Biogas pre-treatment system satisfies Capstone's fuel condition requirement with the test result of 99.9% and 90.2% of hydrogen sulphide and ammonia is removal performance. Installation of microturbine and manufacture of heat exchanger to warm anaerobic digester has been done successfully. Expected economic profit produced by the system is coming from energy saving including electricity 115,871kWh/year and heat contained in exhaust gas 579GJ/year.

Carried out an experiment for quantitative evaluation about intraoral sensor among oral dental imaging equipments in PACS environment. For evaluation, testing environment & evaluation criteria are established that refer to the 'IEC 62220-1-2' and experimented with set up the standard radiation penetration that correspond with RQA-3(IEC 61267). Results of experiments using the image J, derived the ESF(edge spread function), LSF (line spread function) and calculated the MTF(modulation transfer function) finally. As a result, the MTF that 0.1, 0.2sec are 10% about 10 lp/mm and 0.32 sec is the 10% about 9 lp/mm in level represents the value of the MTF. Change of scan condition in dental environmental, according to the MTF value taken note that no changes can be seen enough. However, the dimensions of each other size $1(1200{\times}1600)$, size $2(1440{\times}1920)$ intraoral sensors for 3 lp/mm, respectively 40%, 90% of the note might have been the difference between the value of MTF, in accordance with standard sensors might note differences could be observed.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Objectives: The aims of this study were to identify the efficacy of optimal stent expansion (OSE) according to the Multicenter Ultrasound Stenting in Coronaries Study (MUSIC Study) criteria in drug‐eluting stent (DES) and compare paclitaxel‐eluting stent (PES) to sirolimus‐eluting stent (SES). Background: Although poststent high‐pressure balloon dilatation is proposed after bare metal stent implantation according to OSE, defined by the criteria of the MUSIC Study, very little data are available in DES. Methods: Two hundred fifty patients (M:F = 149:101; age, 61.5 ± 9.2 years) who underwent 9‐month follow‐up angiography in the Poststent Optimal Stent Expansion Trial (POET) were included in this study. We assessed angiographic in‐stent restenosis (ISR) and neointima volume (NV) using IVUS at 9 months. Results: At 9‐month follow up, there were no significant differences in ISR and NV index (NV/stent length, mm<SUP>2</SUP>) between patients with and without OSE. However, the rate of ISR and NV index were higher in PES [ISR: 18 (13.7%) and 4 (3.4%), <I>P</I> = 0.004; NV index: 1.02 ± 0.99 mm<SUP>2</SUP> and 0.21 ± 0.37, <I>P</I> < 0.001 in PES and SES]. Conclusions: OSE according to the MUSIC Study criteria was not related to ISR and NV in the DES era but PES had a significantly higher ISR rate and NV than SES after poststent high‐pressure balloon dilatation. © 2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.</P>
