Determining the Locations and Discontinuities in the Derivatives of Functions

We introduce a method for detecting discontinuities in piecewise smooth functions and in their derivatives. The method is constructed from a local stencil of grid point values and is based on a polynomial annihilation technique. By varying the order of the method and the arrangement of the corresponding stencils, the jump discontinuities of a function and its derivatives can be identified with high order accuracy. The method is efficient and robust and can be applied to non-uniform distributions in one dimension.

An 11-year-old thoroughbred post-partum broodmare presented with the symptoms of colic. The physical and clinical examinations indicated a large colon displacement or volvulus. Immediate surgical intervention was performed, and a strangulating large colon volvulus (LCV) was defined as a volvulus of >540° in the counterclockwise direction. After correcting and assessing the gut viability, approximately 80% of the entire large colon was resected and anasto- mosed using an end-to-end technique. With supportive care after surgery, the horse regained its appetite and vitality without significant clinical complications and was discharged on postoperative day 9. This report presents the first sur- gical correction using a large colon resection and anastomosis (LCRA) and the critical care for a strangulating LCV in a horse in Korea. This case enhances the current knowledge of clinical LCV and the related considerations for treatment.

Bioaerosols are airborne particles of biological origins, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and all varieties of living materials. In suitable hosts, bioaerosols are capable of causing acute or chornic diseases that may be infectious, allergenic, or toxigenic. Bioaerosols from outdoor air accumulate on filters of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system in large quantities and are able to multifly there under certain conditions. In this study, silver nanoparticles were coated on activated carbon fiber (ACF) filters by electroless plating method and their efficacy for bioaerosols removal were tested. Physical filtration and biological antimicrobial test were performed.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Over the last 30 years, the Geum River Estuary and Saemangeum Coast have been subject to major environmental changes, including dike construction, reclamation, and development of industrial complexes. This study aimed to: 1) investigate the occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), alkylphenols (APs), and styrene oligomers (SOs), 2) identify the sources of sedimentary organic matter, and 3) determine key environmental factors controlling the macrozoobenthos community structure. A total of 58 surface sediments were collected from the estuary and coastal area in 2014. Specific persistent organic contaminants (POCs), including 24 PAHs, 6 APs, and 10 SOs were measured. PAHs, APs, and SOs were detected in the sediments at all sites, with concentrations varying among sites. Although POCs concentrations were generally below the Canadian sediment quality guidelines, relatively greater concentrations of POCs were found at some sites adjacent to industrial complexes and the estuarine area. Sediment organic carbon, total nitrogen, and the stable carbon isotope ratio (δ<SUP>13</SUP>C) were determined. Some sites near watergate had about 2–3‰ lighter δ<SUP>13</SUP>C values compared to other areas, indicating that these sites are affected by terrestrial organic matter. The number of species in the macrofaunal community was significantly correlated with δ<SUP>13</SUP>C values (<I>p</I> < 0.001), positively, suggesting that the origin of sedimentary organic matter is important for controlling the macrozoobenthos distribution. Sintering and piezoelectric properties of KNN ceramics doped with KZT

<P>This paper investigates the effect of K<SUB>1.94</SUB> Zn<SUB>1.06</SUB>Ta<SUB>5.19</SUB>O<SUB>15</SUB> (KZT) addition on the sintering behavior and piezoelectric properties in lead-free piezoelectric ceramics of (K<SUB>0.5</SUB>Na<SUB>0.5</SUB>)NbO<SUB>3</SUB> (KNN). The apparent density of sintered KNN ceramics was increased with KZT addition, and a relative density of above 96.3% was obtained with the doping of over 0.5 mol% KZT. The maximum dielectric and piezoelectric properties of epsiv<SUB>3</SUB> <SUP>T</SUP>/epsiv<SUB>0</SUB> = 590, d<SUB>33</SUB> = 126 pC/N, k<SUB>p</SUB> = 0.42, and P<SUB>tau</SUB>, = 18 muC/cm<SUP>2</SUP> were obtained from 0.5 mol% KZT-doped KNN ceramics. A small amount of KZT (~0.5 mol%) was effective for improving the sintering behavior and piezoelectric properties, but KZT addition exceeding 1.0 mol% was effective only for den-siflcation. A small amount of KZT was effective for den-siflcation of KNN ceramics by promoting K<SUB>5.75</SUB>Nb<SUB>10.8</SUB>O<SUB>30</SUB> liquid phase formation. However, even though KNN with 1.0~2.0 mol% KZT had a relative density of > 98.5%, the piezoelectric properties were inferior to those of 0.5 mol% KZT-doped KNN, presumably due to the smaller grain size and excess liquid phase of the KNN ceramics doped with higher amounts of KZT. It is believed that a small amount of KZT could be one of the suitable sintering aids to obtain highly dense KNN based piezoelectric.</P>
