Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 201-211, 1999. -Nephroprotective effects of a crude drug-prearation (E-kong-san) were determined from cisplatin on rabbit kidney proximal tubule and human renal cortical cells by MTT assays and sustained glucose consumption on ciplatin-induced human renal cortical tissue. Levels of creatinine and blood ure nitrogen(BUN) in serum after administration of cisplatin(0.75mg/kg,i.p.) to E-kong-san(0.75g/kg/day,p.o.)-pretreated rats were markedly lower compared to those of cisplatin-treated rats. Moreover, the administration of E-kong-san significantly inhibited the loss of body weight of cisplatin injected rts. These findings suggest that E-kong-san on the cisplatin induced nephrotoxicity led us to investigate whether the effect of this water extract was a result of anti-oxidation. E-kong-san showed strong free radical scavenger activities on 1,1-dipheny1-2picrylhydrazil(DPPH) radical and xanthine/xanthine oxidase(XOD) generated superoxide anion radical(O2-). We further studied the effects of E-kong-san on lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes induced by enzymatic and nonenzymatic methods. E-kong-san exhibited significant inhibition on both ascorbic acid/Fe2+and ADP/NADPH/Fe3+ induced lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsomes. Based on these results, we suggest that-E-kong-san attenuate the cisplatin induced cytotoxicity and its mechanism can be eplained by antioxidant.

Objective : The purpose of this report is to examine the effects of direct moxibustion in the Low back pain patient. Methods : Clinical studies were done 30 patients who were treated with low back pain to Dept. of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, of Oriental Medical Sang-Ji University from September 1, 2003 to August 31, 2004. We treated them by Oriental medical therapy(including direct moxibustion)for 10 days. The evaluation was performed five times(admission day, before and after each twice). Results : 1. VAS was decreased after direct moxibustion for 10 days significantly(p<0.01). 2. After direct moxibustion, S.L.R. T angle of patients were increased. ConclUsions : We brought to the conclusion that direct moxibustion has possibility to the efficient to cure the Low back pain. So we suggest the possibility to use this treatment for Low back pain.
Generation of Janus Droplets for Enhanced Mixing in Microfluidics

A microfluidic channel system to generate Janus droplets is designed and fabricated, where the term Janus droplet refers to a chemically biphasic droplet. It is demonstrated that Janus droplets are formed from elongational breakup of coflowing core fluids which are constrained by a sheath fluid on both sides of them. Rhodamine B is adopted as an indicator to indentify generated Janus droplets. Monodisperse Janus droplets have been generated in a controllable manner such that those with average diameters of $26{\pm}1.24{\mu}m$, $31{\pm}1.44{\mu}m$ and $34{\pm}2.28{\mu}m$ are formed in accordance with flow rate ratios between the sheath fluid and the core fluids, 30,7, 36.4 and 44.4, respectively. Generation of Janus droplets, demonstrated in the present study, has seen a new application in the areas of biotechnology and bioengineering, where enhanced mixing inside the micro bubbles can be utilized without the aid of other means of droplet generation and merging.

<P>We investigated the availability of motor unit number estimation (MUNE) as a quantitative method to assess the severity and clinical progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The 143 ALS patients were evaluated by statistical MUNE and the revised amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale (ALSFRS-R). By using mean values of MUNE according to disease duration, regression equation between mean MUNE and disease duration was presented as a formula. The individual MUNE ratio was calculated by dividing individual MUNE value by mean MUNE value. All patients were classified into 2 groups (MUNE ratio <1 vs. MUNE ratio ≥1) according to the MUNE ratio. Comparison between the 2 groups revealed that the patients in MUNE ratio <1 group or MUNE ratio ≥1 group were respectively assigned to rapid progression or slow progression. We recommended informative mean values of MUNE and best regression equation in ALS patients according to disease duration. These values allow us to evaluate the severity and rapidity of progression in ALS.</P>
ForestDB: A Fast Key-Value Storage System for Variable-Length String Keys

<P>Indexing key-value data on persistent storage is an important factor for NoSQL databases. Most key-value storage engines use tree-like structures for data indexing, but their performance and space overhead rapidly get worse as the key length becomes longer. This also affects the merge or compaction cost which is critical to the overall throughput. In this paper, we present ForestDB, a key-value storage engine for a single node of large-scale NoSQL databases. ForestDB uses a new hybrid indexing scheme called HB+-trie, which is a disk-based trie-like structure combined with B+-trees. It allows for efficient indexing and retrieval of arbitrary length string keys with relatively low disk accesses over tree-like structures, even though the keys are very long and randomly distributed in the key space. Our evaluation results show that ForestDB significantly outperforms the current key-value storage engine of Couchbase Server [1], LevelDB [2], and RocksDB [3], in terms of both the number of operations per second and the amount of disk writes per update operation.</P>

Objectives:?Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a measure of the size variability of circulating erythrocytes, recent studies have shown that increased RDW levels are independent predictors of overall and cardiovascular disease in the general and high risk populations. CVD is one of the most common causes of mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes,and carotid atherosclerosis determined by intima media thickness (IMT) is used to predict CVD risk and related outcomes. However, no study has investigated the association between RDW and IMT in type 2 diabetic patients.Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between RDW and subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes.?Methods:?We analyzed the data of 469 patients with type 2 diabetes from Seoul, Korea. We excluded subjects with a history of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. Anthropometric and various biochemical profiles including RDW were measured. B-mode ultrasound measurement of carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) was used to evaluate subclinical atherosclerosis. Carotid atherosclerosis was defined as C-IMT ≥ 1.0 mm, as assessed by B-mode ultrasound.?Results:?The subjects were stratified into 3 groups according to RDW values. Compared with subjects in the lowest tertile of RDW, those in the highest tertile were older, more likely to be smokers, had higher SBP and BMI, longer duration of diabetes, and higher prevalence of hypertension. The C-IMT values for the first, second and third RDW tertiles were 0.74±0.12 mm, 0.77±0.13 mm, and 0.79±0.14 mm, respectively and showed the increasing trend across the RDW tertiles ( P for trend <0.01). In multiple linear regression analysis, RDW was independently associated with C-IMT. After adjusting for age and sex, the OR for carotid atherosclerosis in the highest tertile of RDW was significantly increased compared to that of the lowest tertile. These relationships remained significant after further adjustments for other risk factors (OR (95% CI), 1.35 (1.01-2.23), 2.04 (1.06-3.94), P for trend <0.05).?Conclusions:?This study showed that RDW is independently associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes.
