In order to study the quarantine and sanitization methods for dried red pepper, comparative effects of commercial fumigation (methyl bromide/MeBr, phosphine gas/PH₃) and gamma irradiation (5, 10 kGy) were investigated in terms of its physicochemical properties. There were no noticeable chances in pH and soluble solids among the untreated control, irradiated and fumigated samples soon after treatments, but some decrease was found in stored samples (especially soluble solid in fumigated samples) for 8 months under room temperature. Total sugar content was influenced by storage time rather than both treatments. Immediately after treatments, reducing sugar content was significantly reduced in the samples including pericarp when exposed to fumigants (p〈0.05), while an apparent decrease was observed in the stored samples including seeds with negligible differences among treatment groups. The electron donating ability (EDA) of the extracts was high in the order of pericarp, whole pepper, powdered pepper and seeds, which was reduced during storage for 8 months particularly in the samples containing seeds. The EDA of irradiated samples during storage was equal to that of the control sample, whereas that of fumigated samples was relatively low (p〈0.05).

Glioblasty/ma Multiforme(GBM) is the one of the most common malignant tumors in central nervous system(CNS). The incidence of the tumor is about 12% of all CNS tumors and about 50% of all intracranial tumors. Though the development of the microsurgical technique, radiosurgical technique, and chemotherapy works effectively, complete cure of the GBM has not been achieved. It has been known that the prognosis of GBM depends on the extent of surgical tumor removal, remained tumor volume, radiation dose, and chemotherapy. Not only patient's age but also tumor characteristics such as MRI enhancement, angiogenesis and necrosis are also very important prognostic factors. Authors experienced very aggressive GBM in aged woman, who received gross total tumor removal, but refused other therapeutic motalities postoperatively. Very rapid recurrence of GBM and global cerebral edema in aged woman should be considered fatal. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of aggressive removal and the limited usefulness of neurosurgical tools in GBM recurrence. Authors would suggest that the early diagnostic effort and the verified neurosurgical therapy for malignant tumor are still strongly requested to make better prognosis.

In this paper, the pumping performance of the multi-stage(two-stage) disk-type drag pump which works in the pressure range from 4 to 0.003 Torr was studied experimentally, and rotational speed of the pump is 24,000rpm and nitrogen is used as a test gas. An experimental study on pumping characteristics of various multi-stage disk-type drag pump is performance. The inlet pressures are measured for various outlet pressures of teat pump. The maximum compression ratios for nitrogen are 1000(multi-stage disk-type drag pump), 740(helical-type drag pump), 90(BSC disk-type drag pump) and 85(OSC disk-type drag pump), respectively. The ultimate pressure of the multi-stage disk-type drag pump is 3.7×10-5 Torr at 0.003 Torr for outlet pressure. The maximum value of compression ratio is 1000 at 0.6 Torr for outlet pressure.
감마선 조사가 조미오징어의 저장 중 품질특성에 미치는 영향

This study was conducted to investigate the changes in the quality of gamma-irradiated seasoned cuttle during storage. Seasoned cuttle packed in PVC film (0.06 mm) was stored at 15±1℃ for 6 months after treatment with doses of 0 to 7 kGy. Microbial populations of seasoned cuttle were 1.6×10^5 CFU/g in total aerobic bacteria, 10⁴~10^5 CFU/g in yeasts & molds, and negative in coliforms, which were effectively reduced by 3 kGy or higher up to the undetectable level(〈20 CFU/g). The pH and moisture content of the samples were not changed with irradiation, but moisture was some decreased during storage. The instrumental color (especially Hunter b value), pigments (lipophilic & hydrophilic) and TBA value of the samples increased with storage time as well as irradiation dose more than 3 kGy. The influence of storage condition, however, were more significant. Irradiation did not induce any changes in volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) and trimethylamine (TMA) contents, thereby maintaining their contents lower than those of the non-irradiated samples during storage by reducing the microbial load.

Background and Objectives:Although it is well established that patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) have a highly favorable prognosis, the extent of thyroid surgery for PTMC remains unclear. According to the 2011 revised Korean Thyroid Association guideline, the choice of surgical strategy(total thyroidectomy versus lobectomy) for PTMC depends on solely preoperative diagnostic scrutinies-ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration cytology. We want to know how accurately these preoperative diagnostic scrutinies define the choice of surgical strategy for PTMC. Materials and Methods:For 119 patients who underwent total thyroid-ectomy with central neck dissection for PTMC, retrospectively, we compared the choice of surgery according to preoperative work up and postoperative pathologic findings. Results:Overall accuracy of the choice of sur-gery by preoperative work up was 61%. Among patients recommended lobectomy on preoperative work up, completion thyroidectomy on postoperative pathology might be necessary for 60% of patients and hidden central node metastasis was revealed in 31% of patients. Conclusions:The results of this study compel us to reinvestigate the current treatment guideline for PTMC. On current guideline according to the sonography and fine needle aspiration cytology, it might be thought to be better to choose more aggressive surgical strategy.

The nondestructive testing using ultrasonic pulse-echo data is an effective test methodology esperially for metal structure. Typically, the ultrasonic pulse-echo data is processed and the results are shown in A-scan, B-scan or C-scan formats. Upon viewing B-scan and C-scan data the viewer is able to identify the location of faults as well as their rough dimension. In this paper, we evaluate the applicability of various 3-D visualization methods frequently used in medical imaging, namely, surface rendering (SR), volume rendering (VR) and maximum intensity projection (MIP), for nondestructive testing purposes. Such 3-D visualization of ultrasonic pulse-echo data enables easier identification of the location and dimension of faults more accurately.

Hydroperoxyl radical/superoxide anion radical ($HO_2{\cdot}/O_2^-{\cdot}$, $pK_a$=4.8) as an intermediate is of considerable importance in oxidation processes. Hence, the method of detecting $HO_2{\cdot}/O_2^-{\cdot}$ with high sensitivity is necessary to be developed. To achieve this objective, this study newly employed terephthalate (TA) as a probe for the measurement of $HO_2{\cdot}/O_2^-{\cdot}$ in the kinetic method presented in our previous study. This method was based on the hydroxylation of TA to produce mainly hydroxyterephthalic acid or hydroxyterephthalate (OHTA), which was analyzed by fluorescence detection (${\lambda}_{ex}$=315nm, ${\lambda}_{ex}$=425nm). The life-time of $HO_2{\cdot}/O_2^-{\cdot}$ and its concentration formed from the photolysis technique of $H_2O_2$ were reported in this study. At range of pH 2-10, the life-time of $HO_2{\cdot}/O_2^-{\cdot}$ was 51-422 sec. In particular, an increase in the life-time with pH was observed. The sensitivities of the kinetic method by using TA were always higher with 1.7-2.5 times at pH 8.0 than those by using benzoic acid. From these results, this study can contribute to understanding the basic functions of $HO_2{\cdot}/O_2^-{\cdot}$ in oxidation processes.
