Timothy Richard (1845-1919) is a missionary to China from the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, who along with Hudson Taylor, is considered to be one of the most influential figures in missions to China. During the 45 years of work in China, he has had no little impact in the Chinese society in the areas of missions, charity, education, publishing, and even in politics and economics while promoting western culture. In the past, significant amount of research studies have been done on Timothy Richard`s biography, reform philosophy, charity works in Shandong and Shanxi provinces, founding of Shanxi university, promotion of western culture, organizing The Christian literature Society for China and Hundred Days Reform, involvement in reformed movement during the late Qing dynasty. However, researches focused on his missions work per se have been lacking in places like mainland China, and almost non-existent in the Korea, America, HongKong, Taiwan. Therefore, it would be a meaningful milestone for the studies of missions history in China to look into Timothy Richard`s philosophy of missions in the late Qing dynasty in the context of the social milieu and charity ministry in Shan dong and Shanxi, making a comparative analysis of his work with those of Hudson Taylor, John Livingston Nevius, and Matteo Ricci in order to understand how his philosophy of missions have emerged. In the present study, we will see that Timothy Richard`s philosophy of missions was a ‘religio-social’ movement with a reform of China as its core concept, developed into a strategy for evangelization of China. Since it was a religious, yet social movement, he desired to evangelize China by employing the relevant ‘3 strategies of missions’ he himself created in order to ‘bring China to Christ.’ These principles stemmed from honest reflections of the previous missions work in China, concretized by the humanitarian ministry in Shan dong province, further developed into an organized concept through evaluation of the period that he was in Shanxi for charity works, and entered into maturity especially after the DingWu Famine.
