Sinsuntaeeuljagumdan is a medical book written by Jong-jun Lee, who was an government official in Yonsan-gun period in Chosun dynasty. This book has importance in medical history, as it was the first privately published medical book in early Choson dynasty, and written by an bureaucratic gentry, not by a professional doctor. Three versions of this book remain, among which Sungam version is printed and closest to the original, while Kyoto version is facsimile manuscript of the Sungam version. The contents of the book can be divided into three subsections, i.e. constituents and making instructions, applicable symptoms and adminstration directions, and medical records and episodes. The medical records, of these three sections, are total 8 cases, with a great value as the first ever medical record in korean history.
암세포주에 대한 우황 50% MeOH 엑스와 함암제의 병용효과

The studies were conducted to investigate the combined effects of 50% MeOH extract of Be-zoar Bovis(MEB) and several anti-tumor drugs. The effects of MEB and several anti-tumor druge on the proliferation of HaLa, Hep G2, SNU-1, MOLT-4 and S 180 cells estimated by MTT colorimetric assays. MEB inhibited the proliferation of HeLa, Hep G2, SNU-1, MOLT-4 and S 180 cell. The inhibitory action of mitomycin C(MMC), cisplatin(CPT) or 5-fluorouracil(5-FU) on the proliferation of HeLa cell was increased by the combined of MEB and their drugs, and the inhibitory action of MMC or CPT on the proliferation of Hep G2 and S 180 cell was increased by the treatment of MEB and their drugs. MEB inhibited the proliferation of Balb/c 3T3 and Tlymphocyte at 10^-4g/ml. The 50% inhibitory concentration of MMC, CPT and 5-FU on T lymphocyte were 0.75, 0.57 and 28.35㎍/ml repectively. The inhibitory activity of MMC, CPT or 5-FU treated group, respectively, on the proliferation of T lymphocyte was increased by the combined treatment MEB and their drugs. MEB increased the number of leukocyte at 5th day. In the groups of the combined treatment of MMC and MEB, the number of leukocytes and the weight of thymus were increased significantly than MMC treated group. MEB increased the number of total peritoneal cells and inbibited the exudation of evans blue into peritoneum. In conclusion, this paper suggest that MEB inhibits the proliferation of HeLa, Hep G2, SNU-1, MOLT-4 and S 180 cells, and the combined treatment of anti-tumor drugs and MEB increase the inhibitory activity of their drugs on several tumor cells. MEB has the possibility of decreasing the side effect of anti-tumor drugs such as leukopenia and immunsuppression.
ROSAE MULTIFLORAE RADIX의 藥理作用에 關한 硏究

In an attempt to investigate the effect of ROSAE MULTIFLORAE RADIX(RME) on the diabetes in rats induced by alloxan(80 ㎎/㎏) or streptozotocin(40 ㎎/㎏) and the contractile force of isolated rabbit ileum, RME was administered per oral daily and the level of blood glucose, serum triglyceride and serum total cholesterol were measured by spectrophotometer and the contractile force of intestine was measured by physiograph. The following resuits were obtained: 1) RME did not change the level of blood glucose and serum total cholesterol, but decrease the serum triglyceirde on the 5th day in normal rats. 2) The level of blood glucose in diabetic rats induced by the alloxan was decreased on the 5th and 7th day of experiment (RME 100㎎/㎏), induced by streptozotocin was decreased on the 7th day of experiment (RME 10 ㎎/㎏) and 5th and 7th day of experiment (RME 100 ㎎/㎏). 3) The level of serum triglyceride in dibetic rats induced by the alloxan was decreased 7th day (RME 100 ㎎/㎏) and induced by streptozotocin was decreased 7th day (RME 10 ㎎/㎏) and 3th, 5th and 7th day (RME 100 ㎎/㎏) of experiment. 4) The level of serum total cholesterol in diabetic rats induced by the alloxan and streptozotocin was not changed by RME. 5) The contractile response of isolated rabbit ileum by RME was not affected by cyproheptadine, but inhibited by atropine and verapamil.

These experiments were performed to investigate the effects of the KAGAM-DANGKWI-BOHYUL TANG(KDBT) extract, clinically used in gynecology, on the hemostatis and on the contractile force of the isolated uterine muscle. The bleeding time and the plasma prothrombin time test were employed as the means to estimate the hemostatic effect of KDBT extract, and the contractile effect of the extract was measured. The experimental results were summarized as followings; 1. In mice treated with KDBT extract the plasm prothrombin time and the bleeding time were remarkably shortened compared with the control group. 2. The contractile effect of KDBT extract on the isolated uterine muscle was not blocked by atropine and cyproheptadine. 3. The contractile effect of KDBT extract on the isolated uterine muscle was inhibited by the pretreatment with verapamil. From these experimental results, it is concluded that the hemostatic effect of KDBT extract might be attributed to the stimulation of prothrombin formation and the direct contraction of the uterine muscle through the increasing uptake of calcium ions into the muscle.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant syndrome, typically characterized by multiple colorectal adenomas and increased incidence of colorectal carcinomas if it is not treated. Moreover, a variety of extracolonic manifestation are seen. The prevalence of thyroid tumors developing in patients with FAP is about 1∼2%. Generally, papillary thyroid cancer indicates low mortality but ,however, as people get older, the cancer becomes more aggressive. So, the operation is required. Recently we experienced a case of FAP, presenting with papillary thyroid carcinoma, and reported with a brief review of literatures.

Purpose : Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) provides a lower dose and cost alternative to conventional CT, promising to revolutionize the practice of oral and maxillofacial radiology. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the absorbed and effective doses of Implagraphy and VCT (Vatech Co., Hwasung, Korea) and compare them with those of panoramic radiography. Materials and Methods : Thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) chips were placed at 27 sites throughout the layers of Female ART Head and Neck Phantom for dosimetry. Implagraphy, VCT units, and Planmeca Proline XC panoramic unit were used for radiation exposures. Radiation weighted doses and effective doses were measured and calculated using 1990 and 2005 ICRP tissue weighting factors. Results : Effective doses in Sv (ICRP 2005, ICRP 1990) were 90.19, 61.62 for Implagraphy at maxillay molar area, 123.20, 90.02 for Implagraphy at mandibular molar area, 183.55, 139.26 for VCT and 40.92, 27.16 for panoramic radiography. Conclusion : Effective doses for VCT and Implagraphy were only about 2.2 to 4.5 times greater than those for panoramic radiography. VCT and Implagraphy, CBCT machines recently developed in Korea, showed moderately low effective doses.
근관 파일의 인지도 평가시 세 가지 디지털 방사선영상시스템의 비교

Purpose : To compare three digital radiographic imaging sensors by evaluating the visibility of endodontic file tips with interobserver reproducibility and assessing subjectively the clarity of images in comparison with the x-ray film images. Materials and Methods : Forty-five extracted sound premolars were used for this study. Fifteen plaster blocks were made with three premolars each and #8, 10, 15 K-flexofiles were inserted into the root canal of premolars. They were radiographically exposed using periapical x-ray films (Kodak Insight Dental film, Eastmann Kodak company, Rochester, USA), Digora imaging plates (Soredex-Orion Co., Helsinki, Finland), CDX 2000HQ sensors (Biomedisys Co., Seoul, Korea), and CDR sensors (Schick Inc., Long Island, USA). The visibility of endodontic files was evaluated with interobserver reproducibility, which was calculated as the standard deviations of X, Y coordinates of endodontic file tips measured on digital images by three oral and maxillofacial radiologists. The clarity of images was assessed subjectively using 3 grades, i.e. plus, equal, and minus in comparison with the conventional x-ray film images. Results : Interobserver reproducibility of endodontic file tips was the highest in CDR sensor (p<0.05) only except at Y coordinates of #15 file. In the subjective assessment of the image clarity, the plus grade was the most frequent in CDR sensor at all size of endodontic file (p<0.05). Conclusion : CDR sensor was the most superior to the other sensors, CDX 2000HQ sensor and Digora imaging plate in the evaluation of interobserver reproducibility of endodontic file tip and subjective assessment of image clarity.
