We surveyed mammalian roadkill at the National Route 6 (Jin-gogae to Songcheon, 18㎞) and a local road 446 (Odaesan National Park office to Sangwon-temple, 12㎞) in Odaesan National Park. Data of the surveys were analyzed by year, month, and species. Roadkills of 226 individuals were found at the survey areas. Of them, the road-killed 131 mammal individuals, 44 bird individuals, 40 reptile individual and 11 amphibian individuals were found during the survey period. High ratio of the road-kills was observed in mammals than the other animals. Among mammalian species, high ratio of the road-kills was observed in squirrels. There were road-kills of three endangered species, containing otters, yellow-throated marten and leopard cats. According to the analyses of annual road-kills, roadkills of 104 cases were occurred and highly frequent in 2014, following by roadkills of 81 cases in 2015, and then those of 41 cases in 2016. Most ases of the roadkills occurred in summer (June to September). The results will contribute to establishing management for reduction of roadkill in Odaesan National Park.

Backgrounds Arctigenin derived from the seeds of Arctium lappa Linnaeus is known as an anticancer drug candidate by targeting various pathways involved in anticancer therapy. Methods Using 2D monolayer and 3D spheroid culture systems in nasal septum carcinoma RPMI-2650 cells, the effects of arctigenin and dexamethasone on cell viability, ROS levels, ATP level, mitochondrial function, apoptosis and necroptosis were examined. Results The combination treatment of both compounds induced strong cytotoxicity, accompanied by increases of sub-G0/ G1 peak, annexin V-PE-positive cells, and ROS levels, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, and decrease of cellular ATP content. These changes were observed as simultaneous induction of DNA damage, apoptosis, and necroptosis. A series of changes by arctigenin and dexamethasone were efficiently restored by decreasing ROS levels or supplementing ATP. Treatment of 3D spheroids with arctigenin and dexamethasone decreased cell viability in the spheroids, but it was slightly resistant than cells under 2D conditions. In addition, this phenomenon was accompanied by an increase in mediators for both apoptosis and necroptosis. Conclusion Results of this study suggest that the apoptosis and necroptosis-inducing effects of arctigenin are associated with ATP depletion due to oxidative mitochondrial dysfunction.

We investigated species, ecological pathway type, and mammal size using two eco-tunnels from trail-camera data. The analyses of the camera data showed that 12 mammalian species from 8 families of 5 orders used Jin-gogae eco-corridor (bridge type) and 14 mammalian species from 9 family 5 orders were found at Odaesan eco-corridor (tunnel type). At both eco-corridors, water deer used eco-corridor most frequently, and then secondly racoon dog did. The analyses by mammal size (small, medium, and large) showed that large-sized mammals were found in high ratio at the bridge type of the eco-corridors. In case of medium-sized mammals, utilization ratio of the tunnel-typed corridor was 42%, whereas that of the bridge-typed corridor was 24%, showing 1.8 times higher usage.

An all‐solution‐processed flexible piezoelectric nanogenerator, composed of polycrystalline ZnO thin film and functional polymer layers such as P3HT/PCBM and PEDOT:PSS, generates energy through a mechanical rolling and muscle stretching system. On page 6022, Youn Sang Kim, Sang‐Woo Kim, and co‐workers show that this all‐solution‐processed nanogenerator is feasible as a piezoelectric patchable device and is promising for use in future energy harvesters such as wearable human patches and mobile electronics.

Graphic Abstract
The cover shows an image of fully rollable transparent nanogenerators synthesized using chemical vapor deposition grown large-scale graphene sheets as transparent electrodes and piezoelectric ZnO nanorod arrays. Sang-Woo Kim, Jae-Young Choi, and co-workers report on p. 2187 the electrical and structural stability of the nanogenerators, with excellent charge scavenging performance under external mechanical loads such as bending and rolling. This study shows that graphene-based nanogenerators are very promising for self-powered rollable transparent device applications.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study was performed to determine the efficacy of histone deacetylase inhibitors in gastric cancer, together with other established regimens. METHODOLOGY: The chemosensitivities of 93 gastric cancer patients to established drugs, and three histone deacetylase inhibitors (SAHA, PXD101, and a novel candidate, CG-2) were evaluated using the histoculture drug response assay. RESULTS: Tumor growth inhibition rates were the highest with cisplatin, followed by PXD101, taxol, docetaxel, and TS-1, in descending order. The response rates were 41.9-68.8%, and 37.6-47.3%, respectively, at an inhibition rate cutoff value of 30%. Synergistic activity was evident with most combinations of established drugs and histone deacetylase inhibitors. Diffuse- or mixed-type carcinomas on Lauren classification were closely associated with increased chemosensitivity to TS-1 (p = 0.044). Node-positive and 'other than tubular type' tumors on WHO classification were chemosensitive to cisplatin (p = 0.011 and 0.014, respectively). CG-2 chemosensitivity was markedly associated with low preoperative CA724 level (< or = 4 U/ml) (p = 0.046). CONCLUSIONS: This in vitro chemosensitivity assay validates the comparable chemo-response of gastric cancers to histone deacetylase inhibitors and established drugs, indicating considerable therapeutic efficacy of these agents. Additionally, a number of clinicopathological parameters are significantly associated with specific regimens.
