Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) beneath the forest canopy, understory species richness and diversity, and biomass were measured in a Larix leptolepis plantation seven years after thinning in Yangpyeong. Four different thinning intensities (control, $10\%,\;20\%\;and\;40\%$ stocking reduction) were applied in 1997. The current PAR values were lower than those measured four years after thinning, and PAR at the heavy thinning plots was significantly higher than that of other thinning intensities. A total of 23 species including 9 tall-trees and 14 shrubs were found for the high layer while a total of 82 species including 10 tall-trees, 29 shrubs, and 43 herbs for the low layer. Species richness and diversity generally increased with thinning intensities, and the trends were more evident for the low layer. Aboveground biomass significantly differed among thinning intensities for both shrubs and herbs. Also there was a negative correlation between biomass and the current number of stems per hectare. The current study suggested that the effects of thinning on light conditions at the forest floor, species richness and diversity and production of understory vegetation continued seven years after the treatment.

CAD/CAM technology is increasingly being used for the fabrication of various prostheses. Digitized attempts are also underway for both removable partial dentures as well as fixed partial dentures. Conventional methods to fabricate removable partial denture require innumerable laboratory procedures, such as impression, surveying, blockout, making fire model, and wax-up. In this paper, we demonstrate the process using electronic surveying and blockout in Sensable`s intellifitTM Digital restoration system, and zirconia surveyed crown and framework fabrication through the digital process. The clinical application of digital systems in the dental field is expected to increase with the advancement and development of technology in the near future.

INTRODUCTION: Dietary omega-3 fatty acid (FA) has cardioprotective effect and is associated with a slower deterioration of albumin excretion. There is no report about the effect of omega-3 FA on proteinuria in patients with diabetic nephropathy who are well controlled blood pressure with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) or angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB). We hypothesized that omega-3 FA supplementation decrease proteinuria and change erythrocyte membrane FA contents which is related with acute coronary syndrome in patients with diabetic nephropathy. METHODS: In a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled design, a total of 19 patients treated with ACEI or ARB, was randomized to treatment for 12 weeks with omega-3 FA or a control treatment. We measured proteinuria with random spot urine and urine collected for 24 hours. Urinary liver-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) were measured by enzyme-linked immunoassay. Erythrocyte membrane fatty acid contents were measured by gas chromatography. RESULTS: The mean age of the enrolled patients was 60.4±10.7 years and mean blood pressure was 121/72 mmHg. Baseline urinary protein to creatinine ratio, 24 hours urine protein and serum creatinine were 0.74±0.65 g/g, 0.53±0.53 g and 1.23±0.20 mg/dL. Blood pressure, proteinuria, albuminuria (443.2±614.6 mg/g vs. 348.0±390.6 mg/g), serum creatinine, L-FABP, PGE2, NGAL (35.1±57.2 ng/mL vs. 25.4±17.8 ng/mL) and lipid profile were not significantly changed in omega-3 FA supplemented group after 12 weeks compared to baseline. The eryt! hrocyte membrane contents of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) (p=0.025) were significantly increased and arachidonic acid to EPA ratio (p=0.012) and oleic acid (15.8±2.9 % vs. 13.1±2.2 %, p=0.036) were significantly decreased in omega-3 FA supplemented group after 12 weeks compared to baseline. CONCLUSIONS: Although there is no additive effect of omega-3 FA on proteinuria, FA contents of erythrocyte membrane were significantly changed by omega-3 FA treatment for 12 weeks in patients with diabetic nephropathy who are well controlled blood pressure with ACEI or ARB.

Manassantin A, a neolignan isolignan from saururus chinensis, is a major phytochemical compound that has various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, neuroleptic, and human acyl-CoA : cho-lesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) inhibitory activities. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of manassantin A against ethanol-induced acute gastric injury in rats. Gastric injury was induced by intra-gastric administration of 5mL/kg body weight of absoulye ethanol to each rat. The positive control group and the manassantin A group were given oral doses of omeprazole (20mg/kg) or manassantin A (15mg/kg), respectively, 1h prior to the administration of absolute ethanol. Our examinations revealed that manassantin A pretreatment reduced ethanol-induced hemorrhage, hyperemia, and epithelial cell loss in the gastric mucosa. Manassantin A pretreatment also attenuated the increased lipid peroxidation associated with ethanolinduced acute gastric lesions, increased the mucosal glutathione (GSH) content, and enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes. The levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-iβ were clearly decoreased in the manassantin A-pretreated group. In addition, manassantin A pretreatment enhanced the levels of cyclooxygenase (COX)-1, COX-2, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE,) and reduced the inducible nitric oxide synthase (INOS) overproduction and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) phosphorylation. Collectively, these results indicate that manassantin A protects the gastric mucosa from ethanol-induced acute gastric injury, and suggest that these protective effects might be associated with COX/PGE2 stimulation, inhibition of INOS production and NF-κB activation, and improvements in the antioxidant and anti- inflammatory status.
