        Antimicribial and Antioxidant Activities of Ethanol Extracts of Medicinal Plants

        The objective of this study was to determine the radical scavenging activity, total phenolic content, antimicrobial activity, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ethanol extracts of 32 medical plant species that have been commonly used in medicinal plants. Total phenolic index of T. chebula exhibited the highest value (498.01 mg/g), followed by R. coreanus miquel (400.33 mg/g), Sanguisorba officinalis (368.25 mg/g), P. thumbergiana (259.74 mg/g) and Eugenia aromaticum (229.38 mg/g). Radical scavenging activity for the DPPH radical was highest in T. chebula (40.91%, p<0.01), followed by C. sappan (36.50%), S. officinalis (32.92%), R. coreanus miquel (26.54%) and P. thumbergiana (24.50%). The extracts from T. chebula, R. coreanus muquel, C. sappan, E. aromaticum, S. officinalis and C. japonica possessed outstanding antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacillus plantarum. MIC was determined on those extracts that showed high efficacy against the test organisms. The most potent MIC values were seen for T. chebula extract against P. aeruginosa, S. aurusa, E. coli, B. subtilis, L. plantarum and S. Typhimurium at 7.8, 7.8, 15.6, 7.8, 125 and 31.2 ㎍/mL, respectivley. Furthermore, the total phenolic content and radical scavenging activity were very closely correlated for all samples (r=0.78). The coefficient correlations between total phenolic index and antimicrobial activity were 0.91 (E. coli), 0.91 (B. subtillis), 0.79 (P. aeruginosa), 0.79 (S. Typhimurium) and 0.70 (L. plantarum).

        In this paper, we present the computer vision and image processing(CVIP) algorithm development environment with which researchers can easily create new algorithms by making use of existing CVIP functions. The presented systems enable users to register their own algorithms and related help information to the systems without recompiling the systems. It supports standard data types necessary for reusable CVIP algorithm development. It also provides flexible programming environment with friendly user interface for efficient algorithm development and testing. We believe that this system will provide users an efficient environment for creating, managing, reusing, and teaching CVIP algorithms. This systems also will play an important role in creating an expert systems with which users with little knowledge about CVIP can develop their own application systems. 본 논문은 끊임없이 개발되는 CVIP(Computer & Image Processing) 알고리즘들을 체계적으로 관리하여 쉽게 알고리즘을 개발할 수 있고, 연구자들 사이의 연구 결과를 교환할 수 있어 연구의 생산성을 극대화시킬 수 있는 개발 환경을 제안한다. 제안된 개발 환경은 표준화된 자료 형식을 지원하는 기본 프레임(frame) 위에 쉽게 함수를 추가하여 사용할 수 있는 체계적인 함수 관리 기능, 개발된 다양한 알고리즘들을 직접 결합하고 테스트하여 새로운 알고리즘을 작성할 수 있는 프로그래밍 기능과 융통성 있는 사용자 인터페이스를 제공한다. 본 환경은 기존의 시스템보다 빠르게 숙지할 수 있고 신속하고 저렴하게 응용 시스템을 개발할 수 있을 뿐만이 아니라 공유와 객관적인 비교 평가를 가능하게 할 수 있어 실제적인 교육 측면에서도 전문가 양성 교육에 도움을 줄 수 있으리라 여겨진다. 또한 끊임 없이 개발되는 CVIP 알고리즘과 관련 지식을 체계적으로 관리하므로서 비전문가도 필요한 응용 시스템을 작성할 수 있는 전문가 시스템 개발에도 지대한 공헌을 할 것으로 기대된다.

        일부 중학생의 구강보건지식 및 행위 조사연구

        The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health behavior and knowledge of middle schoolers in an attempt to facilitate the selection of what to teach about oral health. The subjects in this study were 315 students at three different middle schools located in the city of Gunsan. After a self-administered survey was conducted by using structured questionnaires in collaboration with their homeroom teachers, the answer sheets from 315 students were gathered. And the answer sheets from 302 students were analyzed with SPSS 12.0 program except 13 incomplete ones. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. By gender and grade, the middle school boys(51.3%) outnumbered the middle school girls(48.7%), and the seventh, eighty and ninth graders respectively accounted for 31.5, 32.8 and 35.8 percent. 2. As to the parts of the mouth they brushed, the largest number of the seventh graders(31.6%) and ninth graders(56.5%) brushed their teeth and tongue. The largest group of the eighth graders(39.4%) brushed their teeth, tongue and gums, and the gaps between them and the others were statistically significant. 3. In regard to toothbrushing frequency, the ninth graders did that 2.62 times, which was the largest frequency, but the gap between them and the others was not statistically significant. The seventh graders got a mean of 2.95 and 3.48 on oral health behavior and knowledge respectively, and the eighth graders got 2.73 and 3.42 respectively. The ninth graders got 2.70 and 3.07. Thus, the seventh graders scored statistically significantly better than the eighth and ninth graders(p<0.01, p<0.05). As for oral health knowledge by gender, the boys and girls got 3.17 and 3.47 respectively. The latter scored significantly higher than the former(p<0.05). 4. Concerning school oral health education experiences, the rates of the seventh, eighth and ninth graders who had ever received that education stood at 69.5, 50.6 and 50.5 percent respectively, and those students significantly outnumbered the others who hadn`t(p<0.01). As to the necessity of school oral health education, they considered it necessary to receive that education from professionals irrespective of grade, but the gap between them and the others was statistically insignificant. Regarding an intention of receiving school oral health education, those who were willing to take that education statistically significantly outnumbered the others who weren`t(p<0.05). The rates of the former students in their seventh, eighth and ninth grades respectively stood at 71.6, 53.6 and 63.0 percent. 5. As for the relationship of their oral health behavior scores to toothbrushing frequency, there was a statistically significant correlation between the two(r=0.227, p<0.001). And the oral health knowledge scores had a statistically significant correlation to toothbrushing frequency (r=0.116, p<0.05) and oral health behavior scores(r=0.358, p<0.001). Therefore, it could be said that higher oral health knowledge scores led to higher oral health behavior scores and more toothbrushing frequency.

        소규모 세탁소의 휘발성유기화합물 발생 특성과 종사자의 건강에 미치는 영향

        Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the generating characteristics of VOCs and the exposure effect to chemicals among laundry workers and to identify the current status of occupational safety and health through health check-ups. Methods: During the six-month period from April to September 2015, this study quantitatively measured seven VOCs in ten laundries and carried out health examinations on 35 workers. Results: Comparing the monitoring results for the ten laundries, they were classified into three groups by ventilation system, dry-cleaning and size of shop. The average concentration of toluene, chlorobenzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, benzene, styrene and TCE were 23.9, 15.6, 5.5, 2.8, 0.9, 0.3 and 1.3 ㎍/m3, respectively. During dry-cleaning, VOC concentrations were 1.3-8.9 times higher than usual. On the other hand, at night the concentrations of toluene, chlorobenzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, benzene, styrene and TCE were 64.3, 41.5, 12.2, 6.3, 1.1, 1.2 and 6.6 ㎍/m3, respectively. The health checkup results for the 35 workers showed that 13 workers were diagnosed as normal, while 22 workers were diagnosed as requiring continuous monitoring or re-checkup of liver and hematogenous functions. Conclusions: Although the results of exposure evaluation to VOCs did not exceed reference value and items had a low correlation with health checkup items, it is necessary to improve indoor air quality due to VOC volatilization from clothes

        In this paper, authors propose a new nonlinear rotor flux observer for rotor field oriented control of an induction motor which is designed based on theory of the extended Luenberger observer(ELO), one of a nonlinear state observer. The proposed rotor flux observer is derived from the 2 phase model of induction motor by the theory of ELO.
