        The Impact of the Language Learning Environment on Vocabulary Learning Strategies

        The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of the target language learning environment on vocabulary learning strategies used by the Korean learners of English To find the effects of the learning environment and language exposure on the use of strategy and the perception of strategy helpfulness, two groups of learners such as the Korean EFL learners and ESL learners were studied by questionnaire The 400 subjects were recruited from the two cities Incheon in Korea and Brisbane in Australia They were asked to indicate the strategies which they used and regarded as effective The strategies on the survey questionnaire consisted of 14 meaning discovery strategies and 30 consolidation strategies The data were analyzed by comparing percentages of positive indications to each strategy between the two groups of participants The results showed that the ESL students use more various strategies than the EFL students The ESL learners undertook a balanced use of strategies in the number and range of strategies, in contrast to the EFL learners who used a much more limited range

        Development and Validation of the Korean Version of the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Screen (ECAS-K)

        Background and Purpose Cognitive and behavioral changes are common in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), with about 15% of patients presenting with overt frontotemporal dementia and 30%–50% with varying degrees of impairments. We aimed to develop and validate the Korean version of the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS-K), a brief multidomain assessment tool developed for ALS patients with physical disability. Methods We developed the ECAS-K according to the translation guidelines, and administered it to 38 patients with ALS and 26 age- and education-level-matched controls. We also administered the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) to investigate convergent validity, and the Center for Neurologic Study-Liability Scale to assess the association between pseudobulbar affect and cognitive/behavioral changes. Results Internal consistency among the ECAS-K test items was found to be high, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.87. Significant differences were found between patients with ALS and the controls in language, fluency, and memory functions (p<0.05). Abnormal performance based on the ECAS total score was noted in 39.4% of patients, and 66.6% presented behavioral changes in at least one domain. Significant correlations were observed between the scores of the ECAS-K and those of other cognitive screening tools (MoCA and FAB, with correlation coefficients of 0.69 and 0.55, respectively; p<0.01). Conclusions We developed and validated the ECAS-K which could be used as an effective tool to screen the cognitive and behavioral impairments in Korean patients with ALS.

      • A System-on-Chip Solution for Point-of-Care Ultrasound Imaging Systems: Architecture and ASIC Implementation

        <P>In this paper, we present a novel system-on-chip (SOC) solution for a portable ultrasound imaging system (PUS) for point-of-care applications. The PUS-SOC includes all of the signal processing modules (i.e., the transmit and dynamic receive beamformer modules, mid- and back-end processors, and color Doppler processors) as well as an efficient architecture for hardware-based imaging methods (e.g., dynamic delay calculation, multi-beamforming, and coded excitation and compression). The PUS-SOC was fabricated using a UMC 130-nm NAND process and has 16.8 GFLOPS of computing power with a total equivalent gate count of 12.1 million, which is comparable to a Pentium-4 CPU. The size and power consumption of the PUS-SOC are 27 x 27 mm(2) and 1.2 W, respectively. Based on the PUS-SOC, a prototype hand-held US imaging system was implemented. Phantom experiments demonstrated that the PUS-SOC can provide appropriate image quality for point-of-care applications with a compact PDA size (200 x 120 x 45 mm(3)) and 3 hours of battery life.</P>

        근린주거지 보행친화 설계기법의 특성 연구

        This paper explores characteristics of recent design strategies to create a walkable neighborhood which is a major issue in contemporary urban design considerations. The main reason for the current atmosphere is that desires for healthy life has brought about fundamental changes in the way we shape the cities because a growing body of evidence suggests that neighborhood design is related to physical activities such as walking and cycling for transport, which offer surpringsing benefits to our health, the environment and community. Therefore, in this review, case studies in recent years suggested to be a walkable neighborhood are revealed, in order to know their neighborhood design strateges for walkability. Especially, Pangyo and Dongtan areas, the 2nd phase new towns, are selected as representative cases in South Korea which may achieve a certain level of pedestrian-friendly environments. The analysis results are used to understand them in comparison, and it mainly discusses physical features in neighborhood unit such as how major facilities proposed to be relevant to neighborhood walkability are placed and how a street system is comprised of. All in all, this study shows additional evidence about which design methods would be more walkable and contributes to providing bases for the improvements of walkable neighborhood design strategies in the future development.

      • A prototype hand-held tri-modal instrument for <i>in vivo</i> ultrasound, photoacoustic, and fluorescence imaging

        <P>Multi-modality imaging is beneficial for both preclinical and clinical applications as it enables complementary information from each modality to be obtained in a single procedure. In this paper, we report the design, fabrication, and testing of a novel tri-modal in vivo imaging system to exploit molecular/functional information from fluorescence (FL) and photoacoustic (PA) imaging as well as anatomical information from ultrasound (US) imaging. The same ultrasound transducer was used for both US and PA imaging, bringing the pulsed laser light into a compact probe by fiberoptic bundles. The FL subsystem is independent of the acoustic components but the front end that delivers and collects the light is physically integrated into the same probe. The tri-modal imaging system was implemented to provide each modality image in real time as well as co-registration of the images. The performance of the system was evaluated through phantom and in vivo animal experiments. The results demonstrate that combining the modalities does not significantly compromise the performance of each of the separate US, PA, and FL imaging techniques, while enabling multi-modality registration. The potential applications of this novel approach to multi-modality imaging range from preclinical research to clinical diagnosis, especially in detection/localization and surgical guidance of accessible solid tumors.</P>

        Seongnam-dong and Okcheon-dong in Anseong city, Gyeonggi-do, are experiencing deterioration and decline because the lack of community space for residents, the declining young people, and the aging population are hindering economic activities in the sites. Accordingly, this study aims to present a new public housing planning as a way to regenerate the sites. As for research methods, we analyzed the population and history of Anseong City and investigated major facilities and residents" circulation on the sites. In addition, we conducted unstructured, informal interviews with six residents from April 2, 2020, to May 29, 2020. The research results are as follows: First, we proposed a residential complex having two functions such as commerce and agriculture within the sites, focusing on the fact that Seongnam-dong and Okcheon-dong are located at significant points connecting the city center and rural area. The urban farming within the complex adopting smart farm technology allows residents not only to cultivate crops but also to enable economic activities such as flea markets, greenhouse, and workshops, which we can call it as "Farm-conomy House." We expected the "Farm-conomy House" to create an opportunity for communication among residents, and it sought to improve the living conditions by attracting young people and economic revitalization.

        대규모 공동주택 개발계획의 보행로 조성 특성에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this paper is to examine the transition of spatial layouts of pedestrian paths in an apartment complex which is produced by a large-scale residential developments. In order to find out characteristics of the transition, this paper analyzes representative development cases, which were constructed from 1980 to 2010, were analyzed. Planning for large-scale residential developments in South Korea started in 1980s and continued throughout the period, which could be grouped into 6 development movements of the early 1980’s New Development, the 1st Phase New Town, the Re-Development, the 2nd Phase New Town, the Multi-functional Administrative City and the Nest Housing Strategies. Based on the existing studies and in-depth interviews, 4 categorized standards were applied to analyze the cases. The results are as follows: First, the number of apartment complexes in standard blocks became doubled, while the typical apartment complex size in a block shrunk. Second, apartment complexes were allowed to have strong a internal and external connectivity through the pedestrian block axis. Third, the hierarchy of pedestrian paths in apartment complexes were further subdivided than the previous era, connecting diverse pedestrian spaces, which resulted in the overall increase of the pedestrian path density. The provision of underground parking spaces, among others, played a critical role. These results could be empirical references to planning for more walkable pedestrian paths in apartment complexes.

      • 멘토링 효과에 영향을 미치는 대학생 멘토의 요인

        본 연구는 학습지도 위주의 멘토링에서 청소년 멘티의 멘토링 프로그램의 만족도와 학업 흥미 향상을 위해서 고려해야 할 대학생 멘토의 요인를 탐색하였다. 이를 위해 학습지도 멘토링을 진행하는 대학생과 그 멘토가 학습지도하는 중학생 청소년 멘티를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며 멘티의 성취수준을 상/하집단으로 구분하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 멘토의 경력관련 기능으로 구분한 멘토의 지도경험, 멘토의 준비도 및 참여도, 멘토의 교과지식이 멘토링 만족도에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 상집단에서는 지도경험, 멘토의 준비도 및 참여도가 유의미한 영향을 주었으며, 하집단에서는 멘토의 준비도의 하위요인인 사후관리 요인이 멘토링 만족도에 부(-)의 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 멘토의 심리사회적 기능으로 구분한 멘토의 교사효능감, 사회적 지지가 멘토링 만족도에 미치는 영향을 분석한 결과 교사효능감은 상집단에서 유의미한 영향을 주었으며 사회적 지지는 상/하집단 모두 유의미한 영향을 주었다. 이상의 연구에서 상집단에서는 멘토선생님의 효능감이나 학습적인 면을 중요시하게 여기며, 하집단에서는 멘토링 프로그램 자체의 내용이나 학습보다는 멘토의 사회적지지 같은 정서적 측면이 중요한 요인임을 알 수 있다. This study was intended to investigate the factors necessary to select and college student mentors to improve the young mentees’ satisfaction with mentoting program in area of learning guidance mentoring. To address the study issues, this researcher conducted a questionnaire survey on the college students who were performing a learning guidance mentoring program and on the middle school student mentees whose academic achievement levels academically instructed by the college student mentors. The results of the analysis are showed as follows. First, this researcher investigated how the instruction experience of the mentors, the mentors’ preparation and participation and the mentors’ knowledge on a curriculum among their career related features, affected the mentees’ satisfaction with the program. The result showed that the high level group showed significant differences in the instruction experience of the mentors, the mentors’ preparation and participation but the post-management factor gave the negative effect on the sense of academic achievement. Secondly, how the mentors’ teaching efficacy and social support among their social-psychological features, affected the mentees’ satisfaction with the mentoring program. The result presented that the high level group showed significant differences in the mentors’ teaching efficacy and the two high and low level groups showed significant differences in social support. As shown in the study, the high level group considers mentors’ sense of efficacy and learning aspects important factors, while the low level group sees emotional aspects like mentors’ emotional support, rather than the contents of the mentoring program itself and learning, as important factors.

      • 노인의 사회적 문제를 해결하기 위한 공동주거 제안

        The purpose of the research is to discover the social problems of the elderly as they enter into an 1)aging society and utilize them to plan the overall plan of the city, compare the 2)lifestyle and patterns of the users and analyze the physical activity ability of the elderly. Specifically, the proposal to connect a single 4)garden path in the form of a 3)platform-type cohabitation is intended to try to resolve the isolation, depression, and social isolation of the elderly through a community between various users in the 3)platform and the 4)garden.
