The methanol extracts of some marine algae were tested for investigating the effects on the formation of lipid peroxide and the activities of free radical generating enzyme in vitro in bromobenzene-treated rat. The extracts of Enteromorpha compressa, Capsosiphon fulvescens, Gelidium amansii, Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum siliquastrum and Sargassum thunbergii which decreased the formation of lipid peroxide, inhibited the activity of xanthine and aldehyde oxidases by adding of each extracts. Phloroglucinol isolated from Ecklonia stolonifera reduced bromobenzene-induced hepatic lipid peroxidation. This compound administered daily over one week before intoxication with bromobenzene did not affect the activities of aminopyrine N-demethylase, aniline hydroxylase and glu tathione S-transferase. Epoxide hydrolase activity was decreased by bromobenzene, which was restored by pretreatment of phloroglucinol, The results suggest that the bromobenzene-induced hepatic lipid peroxidation by phloroglucinol is reduced by enhancing the activity of epoxide hydrolase.
Isolation of Adenosine and Free Amino Acid Composition from the Leaves of Allium tuberosum

부추 잎으로부터 purine nucleoside인 adenosine을 분리하고 그 구조를 기기적인 분석방법에 의하여 동정하였으며 또한 유리 아미노산 관련 화합물들의 조성과 상대함량을 표준품과 동일 조건하에서 아미노산 자동 분석 기기로 비교 검토하였다. 가장 함량이 많은 유리 아미노산들은 alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid 그리고 valine이었다. From the leaves of Allium tuberosum (Liliaceae), the purine nucleoside, adenosine was isolated and its structure was characterized on the basis of spectral data. Besides this nucleoside, the composition and relative content of free amino acids and related compounds, compared to standards determined under identical conditions was also investigated using automatic amino acid analyzer. Major free amino acids were alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and valine.

Previouslyl we reported on the isolation and structure elucidation of quercetin, avicularin, quercitrin and hyperin from the leaves of Rhododendron brachycarpum D. Don (Ericaceae). In the previous report (1) isolation of gypsogenin, gyposogenic acid and quillaic acid from the hydrolysate of the saponin mixture from Melandrium firmum(Caryophyllaceae). In the course of our continuous work on theplant, α-spinsterol-β-D-glucoside and linarin (acacetin-7-0-β-D-rutinoside) were isolated from the ethylacetate soluble fraction of methanol extract. 민간에서 이뇨제로 사용하고 있는 갈대의 고지질혈증 개선 효과와 그 활성성분을 구명하기 위하여 고중성 지질혈증, 고콜레스테롤혈증 및 당뇨병성 고지질혈증 흰쥐에 대하여 메탄올 엑스와 순수 단리한 화합물들을 투여하고 혈액 및 장기의 지방 함량을 측정하였다. 그 결과 갈대의 메탄올 엑스는 중성지방의 농도를 현저히 감소시킨다는 사실을 밝혔다. 메탄올 엑스로 부터 분리하여 얻은 여러가지 화합물 중에서 β-sitosterol과 p-coumaric acid가 중성지방의 농도를 저하시키는 활성성분들 중의 하나일 것으로 여겨지며 혈중 중성지방 저하작용은 아마도 지방조직으로 지질의 축적을 촉진하므로서 이루어진다고 여겨진다. Administration of an MeOH extract of Phragmites communis on hyperlipidemic rats produced a significant decrease in blood triglyceride. The fatty acid mixtures, β-sitosterol and its glucoside, p-coumaric acid, vanilic acid, ferulic acid, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde and sucrose were isolated. Sterol and p-coumaric acid were shown to be effective in reducing the elevated level of triglyceride. The wet weight and the level of triglyceride in epididymal adipose tissue increased following administration of the methanol extract in rats fed the purified diets at the 1% level for 4 weeks. This results suggest that the methanol extract may accelerate the accumulation of lipid in adipose tissue.

In the previous paper, it has been reported that Patrinia scabiosaefolia (Valerianaceae) caused a significant prolongation of hexobarbital-induced sleeping time, elevation of serum transaminase activities and severe histopathological changes in liver in mice. Twonew toxic compounds were isolated and structures were elucidated as 3-β-D-xylo(1→2)-β-D-gluco (1→3)-α-L-rhamno (1→4)-β-D-xylosyl-oleanolic acid and 2`-O-acetyl 3-O-α-L-arabinousyl-hederagenin-28-β-D-xylo (1→2)-β-D-glucoside. Biological activities of the compounds are currently under investigation.

The possibility as an anti-inflammatory drug ofPrunus davidiana which have been used in Korean folk medicine for treatment of neuritis and rheumatism was investigated on carrageein-edema rats when topically applicated. On the other hand, it did not show any effect when orally tested. It also had no influences on isolated ileum of guinea pig and anti-platelet aggregating activities. Thus, it appears from the present findings that the MeOH extract of P. davidiana may be utilizable only for the external treatment of inflammed sites. This suddy was also conducted to further isolation of flavonoids from the EtOAc soluble fraction and characterized as persiconin and isosakuranin by spectrometric analysis.

The effect of wild vegetables such as Allium tuberosum, Allium monan thum, Sedum sarmentosum, Ixeris dentata and Capsella-bursa pastoris on hexobarbital induced hypnosis was tested in mice. Among them, the methanol extract of Allium tuberosum exhibited significant lengthening of the barbiturate hypnosis. When various fractions prepared from the methanol extract of the Allium tuberosum were administered, the chloroform, ethylacetate and butanol extracts caused a significant activity. Through systematic fractionation by SiO₂ column monitoring by bioassays, 1, 2, 3, 4-tetrahydro-β-carboline 3-carboxylic acid from the butanol extract was isolated as one of the active principles of this plant.
