We have studied mutant forms of Kir2.1 in which an aspartate residue (D172), important for gating by intracellular polyamines, is replaced by one of three basic residues (Arg, Lys or His). Such channels are highly selective for K<SUP>+</SUP>, but show inward rectification that is a shallow function of voltage compared with that found in wild type. This inward rectification occurs with a reduced affinity for spermine and persists in the absence of polyamines. Though the unitary current-voltage relation shows some inward rectification, it is insufficient to account for that seen under whole cell recording. Channels open and shut under single channel recording, and changes of <I>P</I><SUB>open</SUB> appear to generate inward rectification. In D172H, the reduction in affinity for spermine is greater when His is protonated at low pH<SUB>i</SUB>. The effective valency for spermine is reduced from 3.09⁑0.07 in wild type to 1.95⁑0.09 in D172H at pH<SUB>i</SUB> 6.3. In the presence of dual mutants of Kir2.1, where E224 is also replaced, spermine affinity becomes undetectable. However, channels still show inward rectification and open and shut under hyper- and depolarisation, respectively. We suggest that Kir2.1 channel are able to undergo conformation changes; these changes may be important physiologically in generating inward rectification, the normal parameters of which are set by the binding of polyamines such as spermine.
고산소압의 적용에 따른 양질의 루틸상 TiO$_2$ 단결정 성장

광소자 응용에 적합한 고품질 $TiO_2$ 단결정을 성장 시키기 위하여 부유대용융법 성장장치에 고압의 산소를 인가하여 결정을 성장시켰다. 0.3,0.4,0.5,와 0.8MPa의 높은 산소압을 각각 인가하여 성장 시킨$TiO_2$ 단결정은 투명하고 어두운 청색을 띄었다. 성장된 결정의 내부구조를 평가한 결과 소경각경계의 존재는 성장 시 인가해준 산소압력에 따라 그 정도가 변화하였고,특히,0.5MPa 산소압력 하에서 성장된 $TiO_2$ 단결정은 소경각경계가 존재하지 않으며 광학적 성질이 우수한 고품위 단결정으로 평가되어 광소자로써 응용이 적합하다고 사료된다. High oxygen pressure has been applied for a floating zone (FZ) crystal grower in order to grow high quality $TiO_2$(rutile) single crystals suitable for optical application. The $TiO_2$ crystals, grown under 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, and 0.8MPa oxygen pressure respectively, are all transparent and dark blue. The degree of the presence of sub-grain boundary in the crystal differs from the applied oxygen pressure. In particular, $TiO_2$ single crystals grown under0.5 MPa showed sub-grain boundary-free and estimated good for optical devices.
The criteria for metabolic syndrome and the national health screening and education system in Japan

Two major definitions of metabolic syndrome have been proposed. One focuses on the accumulation of risk factors, a measure used by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI); the other focuses on abdominal obesity, a measure used by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the Japanese government. The latter definition takes waist circumference (WC) into consideration as an obligatory component, whereas the former does not. In 2009, the IDF, NHLBI, AHA, and other organizations attempted to unify these criteria; as a result, WC is no longer an obligatory component of those systems, while it remains obligatory in the Japanese criteria. In 2008, a new Japanese cardiovascular screening and education system focused on metabolic syndrome was launched. People undergoing screening are classified into three groups according to the presence of abdominal obesity and the number of metabolic risk factors, and receive health educational support from insurers. This system has yielded several beneficial outcomes: the visibility of metabolic syndrome at the population level has drastically improved; preventive measures have been directed toward metabolic syndrome, which is expected to become more prevalent in future generations; and a post-screening education system has been established. However, several problems with the current system have been identified and are under debate. In this review, we discuss topics related to metabolic syndrome, including (1) the Japanese criteria for metabolic syndrome; (2) metabolic syndrome and the universal health screening and education system; and (3) recent debates about Japanese criteria for metabolic syndrome.
Aero-Structural Optimization of a Wing Equipped with Winglets

The purpose of this work is to develop the winglets optimization process with trading between aerodynamic benefits and structural penalties. The evaluation model of winglets has been developed using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) coupled with wing structure models. A wing aero-elastic deformation at the flight condition is estimated using a beam model and air-load obtained from CFD (Euler code). Consequently, the aerodynamic performance of a wing equipped with winglets is evaluated at the 1-G night shape including wing aero-elastic penalties. The weight impacts are evaluated by resizing wing structure models to resist critical loads with the winglets. The evaluation model has been extended to optimization process using response surface method (RSM). The optimization process has been applied to design of winglets for a small civil airplane (The MTOW is 55ton). In present work. the winglet design variables consist of a span, a cant angle and an incidence. Wing twist distribution is also considered as a design variable to optimize the load distribution of wing-winglet configuration and correct wing shape at 1-G cruise condition. As a result, optimized wing with winglets provides significant cruise drag reduction with less weight impacts.
