The output power from renewable energy sources fluctuates because of weather variations. This paper proposes an effective power quality control strategy of renewable energy source-based dispersed power generation system using photovoltaic (PV) system and supercapacitor. A supercapacitor is connected to the DC bus of PV power generation system for power quality control of the grid-connected renewable energy source-based dispersed power generation system. The results of simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed system reduces the fluctuations of grid-connected renewable power system and improves the utilization of PV system.

A significant number of renewable energy systems have been connected to the grids as supplement power source. The renewable energy systems require control algorithm to maintain the power-supply reliability and quality. This paper proposes a novel control algorithm for smart Power Conditioning System (PCS) with harmonics and reactive power compensation. The smart PCS is used to feed Photovoltaic (PV) power to utility and compensate harmonics and reactive power at the same time. The experimentation is carried out on the proposed grid-connected PV generation system, and controlled by digital signal processor. The grid-connected PV generation system injects PV energy into the grid and performs as Active Filter (AF) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) without additional devices. The experiment results show that the proposed control algorithm is effective for smart PCS with harmonics and reactive power compensation.

Grid connected PV(Photovoltic) generation systems are becoming and actual and general. The power output of PV system is directly affected by the weather conditions. And when AC power supply is needed, power conversion by an inverter and a MPPT control are necessary. The PV power generation system can be treated to a harmonics source for the power distribution system. So, the PV system combined the function of active filter system can be useful applied in power distribution system. AF(Active Filters) intended for harmonic solutions are expending their functions from harmonic compensation of nonlinear loads into harmonic isolation between utilities and consumer. With the test analysis of the proposed control strategy of PV-AF system, the outcome of the test shows the stability and effectiveness of the proposed PV-AF system. The various capability of AF has been proved in previous research and usage. In this paper, authors present a DSP controlled PV-AF system for power conditioning in three-phase industrial or commercial power systems and verify it through experimental results.
FPGA를 이용한 소형 태양광 발전 니켈 수소 전지 충전 시스템의 POS MPPT 제어

Recently, the small scale photovoltaic (PV) electronic devices are drawing attention as the upcoming PV generation system. The PV system is commonly used in small scale PV applications such as LED lighting and cell phone. This paper proposes photovoltaic output sensorless (POS) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control for a small scale charging system of PV-nickel metal hydride battery using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) controller. A converter is connected to a small scale PV cell and battery, and performs the POS MPPT at the battery terminal current instead of being at the PV cell output voltage and current. The FPGA controller and converter operate based on POS MPPT method. The experimental results show that the nickel metal hydride battery is charged by the maximum PV output power.
Development and real-time analysis of a RTDS component for lead-acid battery

The advantages of lead-acid battery are relatively low expense, long life span, durability, and the commercial availability of the technology. The battery component for real time simulator has not been provided yet. This paper develops a RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator) component for lead-acid battery and analyses in real time. The component of lead-acid battery is modeled with characteristics of charging and discharging, SOC (State Of Charge), and temperature. The real time simulation results of the model component are very close to the real lead-acid battery property. This component will be applied to the battery energy storage system for analysis of operational characteristics.

최근 분산전원 시스템들이 가정이나 공공기관 등에 많이 설치되면서 계통에 많은 문제점을 일으키고 있다. 이러한 문제점을 연구하기 위해서는 계통 등의 실제 시스템을 설치하여 실험을 하여야 하는데 학교 연구실 입장에서는 실제 시스템을 설치하여 실험하는데 한계가 있다. 그러나 실시간 전력 계통 모의장치 (Real Time Digital Simulator)를 이용하여 실시간으로 시스템을 시뮬레이션 할 경우 다양한 알고리즘의 적용이 가능하고, 고장, 전력계통 과도현상 등 계통에 일어날 수 있는 여러 가지 상황을 손쉽게 고려해 보는 것이 가능하다. 본 논문에서는 RTDS 내 계통 연계형 태양광 발전시스템을 실제 시스템과 유사하게 모델링하고, 실제 DSP (Digital Signal Processor) 를 이용하여 시스템을 실시간으로 운전하는 HILS (Hardware In the Loop System) 시스템을 구성하였다.

This paper deals with operational characteristic analysis of a single-phase PCS (Power Conditioning System) for PV (Photovoltaic) power generation system with AF (Active Filter) function. The theory of dq transformation has been applied to the control strategy of a single-phase PV power generation system to implement the AF function. Application of the virtual two-phase using phase-shift makes it possible to use the dq theory for the single-phase PV power generation system. The authors are sure that the proposed system is a very useful to compensate harmonics caused by nonlinear loads in a single-phase utility system. In this paper, not only a theoretical aspect of the single-phase PV-AF system is discussed, but also the DSP (Digital Signal Processor) based experiment results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the single-phase PV-AF system.
