<P>We compared filtering rates (FR) and mortalities between freshwater filter-feeding bivalve Corbicula leana acclimatized (AM) and non-acclimatized (NAM) to an cyanobacterial bloom (mainly Microcystis aeruginosa) over seven days. Both mussel populations were simultaneously stocked into mesocosms constructed in littoral zones of a eutrophic lake at a density of 740 ind. m(-2) for 16 days. NAMs decreased the concentration of chlorophyll-a 50% less than AMs. For the first seven days, the FRs (0.46-0.61) and mortality rate (slope = -30.2, r = -0.95) of NAMs were higher than those of AMs, possibly due to a sudden increase in unselective filtering. From the eighth day NAM mortality decreased rapidly and then stabilized, becoming similar to that of AMs through the end of the experiment. Stocking both AMs and NAMs increased the NH4-N concentration in the water, and the mortality rates of both mussel populations were correlated with NH4-N. In contrast, other nutrients and microcystin concentrations were not significantly associated with mussel mortality. These results indicate that although a sudden introduction of non-acclimatized C. leana may partially control phytoplankton biomass fora short period, previous short-term acclimatization is needed to minimize mussel mortality.</P>
N2O-Propofol-Fentanyl 마취하에 Mivacurium 과 Atracurium 의 근이완 효과에 대한 비교

The neuromuscular blocking effsct of mivscurium 0.15mg/kg and atracurium 0.5mg/kg were compared in 17 adult patients (ASA class I and II) during N2O propofol-fentanyl anesthesia. Neuromuscular transmission was monitored by recording the compound electromyogram of the hypothenar muscles resulting from supramaximal train of four stimulation applied to the ulnar nerve. Neuromuscular block was recovered spontaneously in all cases. Onset time of over 95% block was not different significantly between mivacurium and atraeurium (201±37.6vs 176.6±28.5sec, p$gt;0.05, mean SD). Duration from injection of mivacurium to 25% recovery of control twitch height was significantly shorter than that of atracurium (13.0±2.2vs 38.8±4.9min, p$lt;0.05). The recovery index was also significantly shorter for mivacurium than for atracurium (6.9±1.1vs 14.5±53.0min, p$lt;0.05). In conclusion, we have confirmed that duration and recovery of action of mivacurium were shorter than those of atracurium, but onset times of both agents were notrent.

<P>A new compound 3-(3-bromothiophen-2-yl)-5-(2,6-difluorobenzyl)oxymethyl-5-methyl-4,5-dihydroisoxazole was synthesized and the herbicidal activity was assessed under glasshouse and flooded paddy field conditions. This compound demonstrated good rice selectivity and potent herbicidal activity against annual weeds at 125 g ai ha<SUP>−1</SUP> under greenhouse conditions. Soil application of this compound showed the complete control of barnyardgrass to the 4th leaf stage at 250 g ai ha<SUP>−1</SUP>. Field trials indicated that this compound, combined with pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, controlled annual and perennial weeds rapidly with good tolerance by transplanted rice seedlings from postemergence and soil application. This compound showed a low mammalian and environmental toxicity in various toxicological tests.</P>

UV irradiation is the main factor contributing to skin damages that are associated with an excessive production of matrix-degrading metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and a deficient expression of collagens. To date, red ginseng has been revealed to possess many biomedical effects, such as anti-aging, anti-oxidation, and anti-inflammatory. In this study, we prepared the Korean Red Ginseng extracts treated with enzyme (KRGE) and investigated the effects of dietary KRGE on the formation of wrinkles generated by UVB irradiation in hairless mice. It was found that KRGE inhibited the UVB-induced formation of wrinkles, epidermal thickness, and skin dryness in hairless mice. Further results also showed that KRGE attenuated UVB-induced MMP-${\beta}$1 level, while accelerated procollagen type I, transforming growth factor-${\beta}$1 secretion. Interestingly, the expression of profilaggrin and filaggrin in both the epidermis and dermis were decreased due to UVB exposure and reversed by KRGE. The KRGE 0.06% was prior to KRGE 0.24%. In view of these results, which indicated that KRGE protected skin from UVB-induced photodamages, which may not only mediated by regulating of MMP-1 and procollagen type I, but also by increasing the production of profilaggrin and filaggrin. In conclusion, our results suggest that KRGE may be a promising agent for the treatment of skin photodamages. The challenge of KRGE will be expected as cosmeceuticals and nutraceuticals in order to intervene in aging-related degenerative skin changes.

韓國人에서 多重增幅 重合酵素反應으로 分析한 STRs 遺傳座位의 遺傳的 多樣性

The tetrameric STRs loci were studied in a population of Korean(n=223) for allele frequency distribution and applicability to identity and paternity testing, using multiplex PCR with electrophoresis of the PCR products in DNA sequencing gels and subsequent detection of allelic fragments by silver staining. The STRs loci analyzed were HUMCSF1PO, HUMTPOX, and HUMTHO1 ; in the Korean population, 9 alleles with their frequency range of 0.002-0.363 are detected in the HUMCSF1PO, 5 alleles with those of 0.020-1.480 in the HUMTPOX, and 6 alleles with those of 0.002-0.489 in the HUMTHO1. The highest observed heterozygosity is found at the locus HUMCSF1PO(0.709), those of the loci HUMTPOX and HUMTHO1 being 0.646 and 0.632, respectively. All loci meet Hardy-Weinberg expectations ; there are good agreement between the observed and expected values under Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Moreover, pairwise comparisons between loci show allelic independence for all the 3 loci comparisons. The power of discrimination (PD) determined for the locus HUMCSF1PO is 0.8896 (88.96%), that of the HUMTPOX is 0.8818(88.18%), and that for the HUMTHO1 is 0.8367(83.67%) ; the combined power of discrimination for the triplex is 0.9976(99.76%). The power of exclusion(PEX) calculated for the loci HUMCSF1PO, HUMTPOX, and HUMTHO1, being prior probability that a falsely accused father will be excluded, and 0.5173(51.73%), 0.4610(46.10%), and 0.5101(510.01%), respectively, and the cummulative power of exclusion(CPE) for all the three loci is 0.8726(87.26%). Thus, these allelic frequency data can be used to construct the database of the multiplex PCR-based DNA profile in the Korean population. The calculated parameter, "power of discrimination(PD)" and "power of exclusion(PEX)", show the informativeness of these loci for the determination of identity and relatedness of individuals.

By constructing a novel proprietary pharmaceutical database, we assessed whether the corporate transparency of Korean exchange-listed pharmaceutical companies affects event-study returns upon Korea Food and Drug Agency approvals of new drugs. The empirical findings are as follows: First, the evidence is that new drugs are priced in the announcement returns. Second, product innovation is appraised higher by the investors when the company is well-governed in terms of trading venue, R&D intensity, balance sheet variables, payout policy, valuation, and years of operation. Lastly, shareholders are wealthier with innovative new products promised by trustworthy managers.
