On an Analytical Quick Game to Investigate the Battle Effectiveness of Forward Depense Concepts

The so-called "Quick Game" -models resemble a central element within the Compound Gaming approach of military systems analysis proposed by Huber [1, 2]. This paper introduces such an analytical model designed to investigate the battle-effectiveness of alternative army structures. The nature of its results is discussed from numerical experiments covering the (German) Army Structure 4, Loser's Area Coverage Defence Concept, and Afheldt's Area Defence Concept. It turns out that Lo¨ser's concept promises to have a comparatively high potential to stabilize the early conventional forward defence, hence being an interesting alternative for further analysis in depth.

<P>Sterile alpha motif- and histidine/aspartic acid domain-containing protein 1 (SAMHD1) limits HIV-1 replication by hydrolyzing deoxynucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs) necessary for reverse transcription. Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are components of anti-HIV therapies. We report here that SAMHD1 cleaves NRTI triphosphates (TPs) at significantly lower rates than dNTPs and that SAMHD1 depletion from monocytic cells affects the susceptibility of HIV-1 infections to NRTIs in complex ways that depend not only on the relative changes in dNTP and NRTI-TP concentrations but also on the NRTI activation pathways.</P>

On the structure of the tight-span of a totally split-decomposable metric

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The tight-span of a finite metric space is a polytopal complex with a structure that reflects properties of the metric. In this paper we consider the tight-span of a totally split-decomposable metric. Such metrics are used in the field of phylogenetic analysis, and a better knowledge of the structure of their tight-spans should ultimately provide improved phylogenetic techniques. Here we prove that a totally split-decomposable metric is cell-decomposable. This allows us to break up the tight-span of a totally split-decomposable metric into smaller, easier to understand tight-spans. As a consequence we prove that the cells in the tight-span of a totally split-decomposable metric are zonotopes that are polytope isomorphic to either hypercubes or rhombic dodecahedra.</P>

The present paper is concerned with the design of a proper patch actuator network in order to track a desired displacement of the sidewalls of a one-storey frame structure; both, for the static and the dynamic case. Weights for each patch of the actuator network found in our previous work were based on beam theory; in the present paper a refinement of these weights by modeling the sidewalls of the frame structure as thin plates is presented. For the sake of calculating the refined weights approximate solutions of the plate equations are calculated by an extended Galerkin method. The solutions based on the analytical plate model are compared with three-dimensional Finite Element results computed in the commercially available code ANSYS. The patch actuator network is put into practice by means of four piezoelectric patches attached to each of the two sidewalls of the frame structures, to which electric voltages proportional to the analytically refined patch weights are applied. Analytical and numerical results coincide very well over a broad frequency range.
