        Synthesis of CdS Nanocrystals with Different Shapes via a Colloidal Method

        Size- and shape-controlled monodisperse wurtzite structured CdS nanorods have been successfully synthesized using a facile solution-based colloidal method. Depending on the control of injection/growth temperatures and the variation of Cd-to-S molar ratios, the morphology of the CdS nanocrystals (NCs) can be adjusted into bullet-like, rod-like, and dot-like shapes. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transition electron microscopy (TEM), and absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize the structure, morphology, and optical properties of as-synthesized CdS NCs. It was found that uniform CdS nanorods could be successfully synthesized when the injection and growth temperatures were very high (> $360^{\circ}C$). The aspect ratios of different shaped (bullet-like or rod-like) CdS NCs could be controlled by simply adjusting the molar ratios between Cd and S.

      • A Traffic Light Recognition Algorithm Based On Compressive Tracking

        According to the traffic light recognition problem of intelligent vehicle, this paper proposes a traffic light recognition algorithm based on compressive tracking. First, the candidate regions of traffic light are extracted. Second, after extracting the HOG feature of candidate regions, using the machine learning for classification and recognition, compressive tracking algorithm is used to track lights that have been identified a automatically. This algorithm combines feature recognition and tracking identification of traffic light and traffic light changes in scale and color can be identified normally. The algorithm proposed in this paper has been tested on actual road in intelligent vehicle; traffic light recognition effect is good.

        Effect of added ionomer on morphology and properties of PP/organoclay nanocomposites

        Ethylene-methacrylic acid ionomer (Surlyn) with concentration up to 20 wt% based on total weight of polymer resin was added into polypropylene (PP)/organoclay hybrids. The microstructure, rheological properties, crystallization properties and mechanical properties of the obtained nanocomposites have been investigated. The addition of ionomer markedly enlarged interlayer spacing of the platelets and led to an improved degree of exfoliation. Moreover,clay silicates were found to selectively disperse either inside the ionomer phase or at the phase boundary. Compared to the binary immiscible blends, an improved interfacial adhesion was achieved for PP/Surlyn/OMMT hybrids. Unlike PP/Surlyn binary blends, the viscoelastic properties of the hybrids significantly increased with increasing Surlyn concentration, which could be attributed to the improved clay dispersion and the contribution of silicate layers at the interface between PP and Surlyn. A synergistic role between Surlyn and clay was also found to suppress the crystallization of PP matrix. In addition, PP/Surlyn/OMMT hybrids exhibited superior tensile strain compared to the corresponding PP/PP-g-MA/OMMT. Both tensile strength and elongation at break showed maximum at Surlyn concentration of 5 wt%. By comparing the experimental tensile yield strength with model prediction, it was suggested that the clay platelets localized at the interface could play a role of interfacial activation to some extent.

      • Endotoxemia-mediated inflammation potentiates aminoglycoside-induced ototoxicity

        <P>The ototoxic aminoglycoside antibiotics are essential to treat severe bacterial infections, particularly in neonatal intensive care units. Using a bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) experimental model of sepsis, we tested whether LPS-mediated inflammation potentiates cochlear uptake of aminoglycosides and permanent hearing loss in mice. Using confocal microscopy and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, we found that low-dose LPS (endotoxemia) greatly increased cochlear concentrations of aminoglycosides and resulted in vasodilation of cochlear capillaries without inducing paracellular flux across the blood-labyrinth barrier (BLB) or elevating serum concentrations of the drug. Additionally, endotoxemia increased expression of both serum and cochlear inflammatory markers. These LPS-induced changes, classically mediated by Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), were attenuated in TLR4-hyporesponsive mice. Multiday dosing with aminoglycosides during chronic endotoxemia induced greater hearing threshold shifts and sensory cell loss compared to mice without endotoxemia. Thus, endotoxemia-mediated inflammation enhanced aminoglycoside trafficking across the BLB and potentiated aminoglycoside-induced ototoxicity. These data indicate that patients with severe infections are at greater risk of aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss than previously recognized.</P>
