3D printing CFD simulation results using structural mechanics

Good visualizations of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results are key to making the best use of them. In many cases, CFD results involve multidimensional data embedded in 3D, and it can be difficult to recognize such complicated 3D shapes when they are projected onto 2D displays. A promising alternative approach uses a 3D printer to build real objects representing the CFD results. In this paper, we present a method of 3D printing the isosurfaces of CFD results to visualize them. However, there is a problem that the isosurfaces are not connected. Therefore, to prevent the structure from breaking up, we must find a way to connect them, and we achieve this by using beams to generate a support structure. We take a structural mechanics approach, using an algorithm to optimize the support structure such that the printed object does not break under gravity, enabling us to hold it safely for observation.
Azabuckybowl-Based Molecular Tweezers as C<sub>60</sub> and C<sub>70</sub> Receptors

<P>We designed and synthesized molecular tweezers consisting of nitrogen-embedded buckybowl subunits. The judicious choice of the covalent linkers modulated their binding strength with C<SUB>60</SUB> or C<SUB>70</SUB> in solution. Titration studies by optical and <SUP>1</SUP>H NMR analyses revealed a 1:1 composition of the resulting complexes. X-ray diffraction analysis elucidated their solid-state structures, in which two azabuckybowl units surround one fullerene molecule. The large association constants stabilize the complexes toward redox reactions and the purification process on silica-gel column chromatography. The linker enabled tuning of the cavity size for binding of fullerenes, achieving complementary fullerene hosts for C<SUB>60</SUB> and C<SUB>70</SUB>: the carbazole-bridged dimer preferentially associates with C<SUB>70</SUB> over C<SUB>60</SUB>, while the phenanthrene-bridged dimer interacts with C<SUB>60</SUB> more strongly than C<SUB>70</SUB>. Electrochemical analysis in combination with density functional theory calculations indicated the existence of intermolecular charge-transfer interactions between the buckybowl units and the fullerenes. Nonlinear optical measurements showed that the two-photon absorption cross sections of the molecular tweezers are enhanced upon association with fullerenes.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

Pesticide legislation in Japan is very complex. It is a virtually impossible task that the farmer understands all of this law. To solve this problem, the authors have developed “Cultivation History Entry System for Agricultural Products”. Even the farmer who does not completely understand pesticide legislation comes to be able to do farm works that uphold pesticide legislation by using this system. This system equips improved usability by adoption of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript+XML) technology. Because this technology enables a server access without screen transition, this system is superior to the past system for agricultural products in response performance and visibility.
Thermo-electronic Properties of the Copper-oxide Cu6O8YCl1−xBrx

We report the thermal conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient of polycrystalline samples ofCu6O8YCl1−xBrx. The lattice constant a linearly increases with increasing Br− concentration x,indicating an expansion of the Cu6O8 cage. At 350 K, the thermal conductivity Κ is small andundergoes very little change with x, suggesting the existence of an anharmonic vibration. On theother hand, the Seebeck coefficient S is enhanced by substituting Br− for Cl−. These facts indicatethat the thermoelectronic properties are sensitive to the Cu6O8 cage size in the Cu6O8YCl system.

Background/Aims: The optimal length of the uncovered portion of partially covered self-expandable metal stents (PCSEMSs) used in endoscopic ultrasound-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) remains unclear. This study investigated the safety and efficacy of PCSEMSs with different uncovered lengths, with a focus on stent migration and time to recurrent biliary obstruction (RBO). Methods: Outcomes of patients undergoing EUS-HGS using PCSEMSs with 5-mm and 20-mm uncovered portions at our institution from January 2016 to December 2021 were compared. Results: Sixty-two patients underwent EUS-HGS using PCSEMS (5/20-mm uncovered portions: 32/30). Stent migration occurred only in the 5-mm group. There were no differences in RBO rates (28.1% vs. 40.0%) or median time to RBO (6.8 vs. 7.1 months) between the two groups. Median overall survival (OS) was longer in the 20-mm group (3.1 vs. 4.9 months, p=0.037) due to the higher number of patients that resumed chemotherapy after EUS-HGS (56.7% vs. 28.1%, p=0.029). Good performance status, absence of hepatic metastases, and chemotherapy after EUS-HGS were independent predictors of longer OS. Conclusions: No migration was observed in patients treated with PCSEMS with 20-mm uncovered portions. Patients treated with PCSEMS with 20-mm uncovered portions performed at least as well as those treated with 5-mm uncovered portions in all material respects.
