Electronic Transport Property of a YbMnO_3/ZnO Heterostructure

The electronic transport property of a YbMnO_3/ZnO heterostructure was investigated. Since ZnO is a polar semiconductor, which has a spontaneous polarization, the spontaneous polarization of YbMnO3 can be expected to affect the carrier transport of the ZnO layer and to interact with that of ZnO. To investigate the effect of the spontaneous polarization of YbMnO_3, we characterized the temperature dependences of the conduction properties of the YbMnO_3/ZnO heterostructure by using Hall-effect measurement and analyzed them by using various scattering effects including polar optical phonon scattering, acoustic phonon scattering through the deformation potential and the piezoelectric potential, ionized impurity scattering and grain boundary scattering. The analysis revealed that the predominant scattering mechanism was changed from grain boundary scattering to ionized impurity scattering by the deposition of YbMnO_3. The change in the scattering mechanism is attributed to a partly depletion of ZnO induced by the spontaneous polarization of YbMnO_3.

This research and technology development project is based on the concept and plan of Sumitomo Forestry Co., Ltd., and designed by Nikken Sekkei Ltd., and is aiming to realize 350 m supertall timber-framed buildings in urban areas by 2041, the 350 year anniversary of Sumitomo Forestry's founding(Fig. 1). By constructing office-based multi-use buildings which have 70 stories above ground with GFA of 455,000 ㎡, using a huge amount of timber of 185,000 ㎥, this project envisions to connect forests and cities, and to solve the problems in both of forests and cities. At the present stage, the main objective is to identify the issues related to wood, such as building structural systems, construction methods, materials used, and resource development, and to create a roadmap for future technologies to be researched and developed.

In wired and wireless mixed networks, split-connection type proxies have been proposed to improve TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) throughput. A proxy is placed at the boundary between a wired network and a wireless one and splits a TCP connection which is established between a host in one of these networks and a host in the other networks into two virtual TCP connections. In this paper, under such environment that IEEE 802.11 WLANs are used as wireless networks, we first investigate throughputs of TCP connections with a proxy and show that although throughputs of downflows (flows from hosts in a wired network to a host in a WLAN) are improved, throughputs of upflows (the reverse of downflows) become smaller compared to those of TCP connections without the proxy. And we clarify that such throughput degradation is caused by congestion of a WLAN, and we propose a method to suppress such congestion.
