        Cloning and expression analysis of UpPDS gene in Ulva pertusa

        Phytoene desaturase (PDS) is an essential constituent of several carotenoid biosynthetic enzymes, which catalyzes phytoene into f-carotenoids. Here, a cDNA encoding PDS gene named UpPDS in Ulva pertusa was cloned by the approaches of expressed sequence tag sequencing of suppression subtractive hybridization cDNA library and rapid amplification of cDNA ends technique. The results showed that the full-length cDNA of UpPDS was 2029 bp, containing 1599 bp open reading frame and encoding 532 amino acids. Homology analysis showed that the deduced UpPDS protein was highly homologous to the PDS proteins from some algal species. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the UpPDS was clustered together with PDS of Ectocarpus siliculosus firstly and was more close to PDS proteins from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox carteri. The RT-qPCR analysis indicated that the transcript level of UpPDS was upregulated during the period of emersion.

        Dickson Charge Pump with Gate Drive Enhancement and Area Saving

        This paper presents a novel charge pump scheme that combines the advantages of Fibonacci and Dickson charge pumps to obtain 30 V voltage for display driver integrated circuit application. This design only requires four external capacitors, which is suitable for a small-package application, such as smart card displays. High-amplitude (<6.6 V) clocks are produced to enhance the gate drive of a Dickson charge pump and improve the system’s current drivability by using a voltage-doubler charge pump with a pulse skip regulator. This regulation engages many middle-voltage devices, and approximately 30% of chip size is saved. Further optimization of flying capacitors tends to decrease the total chip size by 2.1%. A precise and simple model for a one-stage Fibonacci charge pump with current load is also proposed for further efficiency optimization. In a practical design, its voltage error is within 0.12% for 1 mA of current load, and it maintains a 2.83% error even for 10 mA of current load. This charge pump is fabricated through a 0.11 μm 1.5 V/6 V/32 V process, and two regulators, namely, a pulse skip one and a linear one, are operated to maintain the output of the charge pump at 30 V. The performances of the two regulators in terms of ripple, efficiency, line regulation, and load regulation are investigated.

      • Dynamic Behavior Analysis of a Class of Neurons Network Model

        A mathematical model of neurons network cells was studied. Firstly the study conducted numerical calculation by the C language program, and then simulated drawings with the grapher to analyze the model's complex dynamic conduct under different control parameters in the change interval of bifurcation parameter. Period-adding bifurcation and period doubling bifurcation must exist in the graph of ISI for different control parameters. As the external electric fields join in, the dynamic conduct of neuron model will change under corresponding parameters. The research results indicate external electric fields can change the discharge range of the model, which is helpful to explore the influence of external electric field on the excitability of biological neural system and pathogenic mechanism of neural system disease.

        Putative Primo-vascular System in Mesentery of Rats

        Primo-vessels have been observed in the rat abdominal cavity as floating threadlike structures on and not adhering to fascia-wrapped internal organs. To date their presence, locations, and lengths have been irregular and unpredictable, and their identification not regularly repeatable, thus they have remained a nagging enigma in primo-vascular system research for several years. In this work, locations were found where primo-vessels were regularly present and observed repeatedly. These vessels were not floating or freely movable but lay in a regular position in the mesentery in the abdominal cavity of the rat, being observed between the cecum and small intestine and between the colon and mesentery root. The difference between a lymph vessel and a primo-vessel is described in anatomical and histological aspects. In addition, trypan blue was found to enter primo-vessels through the surrounding membranes and filled spaces between fibers comprising the primovessels. It is conjectured that the previously observed floating primo-vessels had anomalously and irregularly emerged, for some unknown physiological reasons,from primo-vessels normally located in the fascia-like mesentery.

        Investigation on a novel high frequency two-dimensional (2D) rotary valve variable mechanism for fluid pulse-widthmodulation application

        In the traditional valve controlled hydraulic system, flow control is realized by changing the orifice area of the control valve, which inevitably leads to throttling loss. However, the high-speed on-off valve is different from other control valves because it realizes the instantaneous release of energy by quickly opening the valve port. Therefore, it can be theoretically considered that there is no throttling loss in the fully open state. Inspired by the operating principle of the high-speed on/off valve, a novel high frequency two-dimensional (2D) rotary valve variable mechanism is proposed, which is used to generate discrete fluid by the fluid pulsewidth-modulation to control and distribute the flow. This rotary valve variable mechanism is similar to an on/off valve group, and a group of rhombic valve ports are evenly arranged on the circumferential shoulder. The valve spool has two non-interference degrees of freedom: rotary motion and sliding. With the high speed rotation of the valve spool, the valve port can be quickly ‘opened’ (connected with the load) - ‘closed’ (connected with the oil tank); while the valve spool slides, the duration ratio of "on" and "off" of the valve port can be adjusted. Similar to the on-off valve, the flow through the rotary valve port mainly depends on the communication time of the valve port (the instant of opening and closing the valve port is not in the scope of discussion). The concept of 2D rotary valve variable mechanism is verified by the simulation and the experiment. The results show that the variable mechanism generates discrete fluid with adjustable duty cycle. In the PWM driven high-speed on/off valve, this is the technology to realize the fluid pulse-width-modulation through the mechanical structure of the fluid control element itself, rather than the PWM control to control the motor, and finally the fluid is controlled to meet the system's demand for oil supply.

        Aldehyde Dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) Polymorphism and the Risk of Alcoholic Liver Cirrhosis among East Asians: A Meta-Analysis

        Purpose: The aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) gene has been implicated in the development of alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC) in East Asians. However, the results are inconsistent. In this study, a meta-analysis was performed to assess the associations betweenthe ALDH2 polymorphism and the risk of ALC. Materials and Methods: Relevant studies were retrieved by searching PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, Wanfang and Veipu databasesup to January 10, 2015. Pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using either the fixed- or random effects model. Results: A total of twelve case-control studies included 1003 cases and 2011 controls were included. Overall, the ALDH2 polymorphismwas associated with a decreased risk of ALC (*1/*2 vs. *1/*1: OR=0.78, 95% CI: 0.61–0.99). However, in stratification analysis by country, we failed to detect any association among Chinese, Korean or Japanese populations. Conclusion: The pooled evidence suggests that ALDH2 polymorphism may be an important protective factor for ALC in East Asians.

        Nanocellulose-Based Hybrid Hydrogels as Flexible Cathodes of Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

        Cellulose nanofibers, detached from natural plants, are very promising for applications in the energy storage devices. The swelling of cellulose nanofibers provides abundant paths in the hybrid hydrogels for ion diffusion towards the active material. There is an optimal composition of 50 wt.% for cellulose nanofibers in the hybrid hydrogels due to the balance between ion diffusion and electron transport, that is, facilitated by conductive graphite nanoplatelets. The aqueous Zn-ion batteries, assembled from the optimized hybrid hydrogels, have a high-specific capacity of 149.4 mAh/g and energy density of 113.2mWh/g, respectively. Moreover, high flexibility of the aqueous Zn-ion batteries is guaranteed by the hybrid hydrogels. There is only a little decay in the electrochemical performance under mechanical bending.
