Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease as a Predictor of Lung Cancer Mortality

Background: COPD has reported as a risk factor of lung cancer. However, there is limited data whether COPD can be a predictor of mortality in lung cancer. This study was performed to investigate that COPD can affect the mortality of the patiens with lung cancer. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with lung cancer during Jan 2007 to Dec 2008 at Chonnam University Hawsun Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. We collected data gender, age, BMI, smoking history, TNM stage, treatment method, spirometry result and identified the state of death. Hazard ratio of mortality in lung cancer patients were calculated for each variables including COPD stage by Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: The variables significantly associated with mortality of patients with lung cancer were gender, age, BMI, smoking history, TNM stage, treatment method, COPD stage by GOLD in univariated analysis. In multivariated analysis, age, BMI, TNM stage, treatment method, and GOLD stage were the significant predictors of mortality in lung cancer. In the univariated analysis, the hazard ratio for normal stage was 1.24 (95% CI 0.92-1.65) in stage 1, 1.65 (95% CI 1.25-2.18) in stage 2, 2.33(95% CI 1.62-3.34) in stage 3. In the multivariated analysis, the hazard ratio for normal stage was 1.10 (95% CI 0.78-1.56) in stage 1, 1.33 (95% CI 0.96-1.85), in stage 2, 1.59 (95% CI 1.04-2.44) in stage 3. Conclusion: This study suggests that COPD is one of the significant factors that predict mortality of lung cancer. COPD should be noted for the reduction of mortality of lung cancer.
Differential Proteomic Analysis of Secreted Proteins from Cutinase-producing Bacillus sp. SB-007

Bacillus sp. SB-007 was isolated from pea leaves harvested from the southwestern parts of South Korea through screening on a minimal medium containing 0.2% purified cutin for its ability to induce the cutinase production. However, no cutinase was produced when it was grown in a minimal medium containing 0.2% glucose. A proteomic approach was applied to separate and characterize these differentially secreted proteins. The expression level of 83 extracellular proteins of the cutinase-producing Bacillus sp. strain SB-007 incubated in a cutinase-induced medium increased significantly as compared with that cultured in a non cutinase-induced medium containing glucose. The extracellular proteome of Bacillus sp. SB-007 includes proteins from different functional classes, such as enzymes for the degradation of various macromolecules, proteins involved in energy metabolism, sporulation, transport/binding proteins and lipoproteins, stress inducible proteins, several cellular molecule biosynthetic pathways and catabolism, and some proteins with an as yet unknown function. In addition, the two protein spots showed little similarities with the known lipolytic enzymes in the database. These secreted proteome analysis results are expected to be useful in improving the Bacillus strains for the production of industrial cutinases.

To maximize the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the electrolysis of water, nano-grade $IrO_2$ powder with a low specific surface was prepared as a catalyst for a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) system, and a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) was prepared with a catalyst loading as low as $2mg\;cm^{-2}$ or less. The $IrO_2$ catalyst was composed of heterogeneous particles with particle sizes ranging from 20 to 70 nm, having a specific surface area of $3.8m^2g^{-1}$. The anode catalyst layer of about $5{\mu}m$ thickness was coated on the membrane (Nafion 117) for the MEA by the decal method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed strong adhesion at the interface between the membrane and the catalyst electrode. Although the loading of the $IrO_2$ catalyst was as low as $1.1-1.7mg\;cm^{-2}$, the SPE cell delivered a voltage of 1.88-1.93 V at a current density of $1A\;cm^{-2}$ and operating temperature of $80^{\circ}C$. That is, it was observed that the over-potential of the cell for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) decreased with increasing $IrO_2$ catalyst loading. The electrochemical stability of the MEA was investigated in the electrolysis of water at a current density of $1A\;cm^{-2}$ for a short time. A voltage of ~2.0 V was maintained without any remarkable deterioration of the MEA characteristics.
Genetic Association Study of $THR{\beta}$Polymorphisms with Obesity in Korean Population

The growing problem of obesity is associated with numerous medical conditions. Several studies have reported that activation of thyroid hormone receptor beta $(THR{\beta})$ is involved in lipid metabolism and thermogenesis. To identify the relationship between the $THR{\beta}$ gene and obesity, we genotyped eighty two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the gene using the Affymetrix array chip in 209 overweight/obese and 155 normal subjects in Korean population. Of the eighty two polymorphisms, the seven SNPs exhibited a significant association with overweight/obesity in three alternative models (codominant, dominant, and recessive models; P<0.05 after adjusting for age and sex) were rs826221 (+267878 T>C), rs4858604 (+186399 A>G), rs1158265 (+200152 T>C), rs1868575 (+206031 G>A), rs1700939 (+238467 T>A), rs1505301 (+241933 T>C), and rs1924768 (+126491 T>C). During haplotype analysis using HapAnalyzer software, 2 haplotypes (block 13: TTAT; block 15: CTGC) containing significant polymorphisms (rs1700939 +238467 T>A and rs4858604 +186399 A>G) were detected to be significantly different. The results suggest that the $THR{\beta}$ gene may be associated with overweight/obesity in Korean population.
